Interferometric sensing of the tilt angle of a Gaussian beam
We investigate interferometric techniques to estimate the deflection angle of
an optical beam and compare them to the direct detection of the beam
deflection. We show that quantum metrology methods lead to a unifying treatment
for both single photons and classical fields. Using the Fisher information to
assess the precision limits of the interferometric schemes, we show that the
precision can be increased by exploiting the initial transverse displacement of
the beam. This gain, which is present for both Sagnac and Mach-Zehnder-like
configurations, can be considerable when compared to non-interferometric
methods. In addition to the fundamental increase in precision, the
interferometric schemes have the technical advantage that (i) the precision
limits can be saturated by a sole polarization measurement on the field, and
that (ii) the detection system can be placed at any longitudinal position along
the beam. We also consider position-dependent polarization measurements, and
show that in this case the precision increases with the propagation distance,
as well as the initial transverse displacement.Comment: Comments are welcom
Quantum speed limit for physical processes
The evaluation of the minimal evolution time between two distinguishable
states of a system is important for assessing the maximal speed of quantum
computers and communication channels. Lower bounds for this minimal time have
been proposed for unitary dynamics. Here we show that it is possible to extend
this concept to nonunitary processes, using an attainable lower bound that is
connected to the quantum Fisher information for time estimation. This result is
used to delimit the minimal evolution time for typical noisy channels.Comment: results unchanged; new in this version: greater focus on geometrical

Entangled coherent states and squeezing in N trapped ions
We consider a resonant bichromatic excitation of N trapped ions that
generates displacement and squeezing in their collective motion conditioned to
their ionic internal state, producing eventually Scrhodinger cat states and
entangled squeezing. Furthermore, we study the case of tetrachromatic
illumination or producing the so called entangled coherent states in two

Two Distinct, Geographically Overlapping Lineages of the Corallimorpharian Ricordea Florida (Cnidaria: Hexacorallia: Ricordeidae)
We examined the genetic variation of the corallimorpharian Ricordea florida; it is distributed throughout the Caribbean region and is heavily harvested for the marine aquarium trade. Eighty-four distinct individuals of R. florida were sequenced from four geographically distant Caribbean locations (Curaçao, Florida, Guadeloupe, and Puerto Rico). Analysis of the ribosomal nuclear region (ITS1, 5.8S, ITS2) uncovered two geographically partially overlapping genetic lineages in R. florida, probably representing two cryptic species. Lineage 1 was found in Florida and Puerto Rico, and Lineage 2 was found in Florida, Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, and Curaçao. Because of the multi-allelic nature of the ITS region, four individuals from Lineage 1 and six from Lineage 2 were cloned to evaluate the levels of hidden intra-individual variability. Pairwise genetic comparisons indicated that the levels of intra-individual and intra-lineage variability (\u3c1%) were approximately an order of magnitude lower than the divergence (~9%) observed between the two lineages. The fishery regulations of the aquarium trade regard R. florida as one species. More refined regulations should take into account the presence of two genetic lineages, and they should be managed separately in order to preserve the long-term evolutionary potential of this corallimorpharian. The discovery of two distinct lineages in R. florida illustrates the importance of evaluating genetic variability in harvested species prior to the implementation of management policies
Identification of a spatio-temporal model of crystal growth based on boundary curvature
A new method of identifying the spatio-temporal transition rule of crystal growth is introduced based on the connection between growth kinetics and dentritic
morphology. Using a modified three-point-method, curvatures of the considered crystal branch are calculated and curvature direction is used to measure growth
velocity. A polynomial model is then produced based on a curvature-velocity relationship to represent the spatio-temporal growth process. A very simple simulation
example is used initially to clearly explain the methodology. The results of identifying a model from a real crystal growth experiment show that the proposed
method can produce a good representation of crystal growth
