Feasibility of self-structured current accessed bubble devices in spacecraft recording systems
The self-structured, current aperture approach to magnetic bubble memory is described. Key results include: (1) demonstration that self-structured bubbles (a lattice of strongly interacting bubbles) will slip by one another in a storage loop at spacings of 2.5 bubble diameters, (2) the ability of self-structured bubbles to move past international fabrication defects (missing apertures) in the propagation conductors (defeat tolerance), and (3) moving bubbles at mobility limited speeds. Milled barriers in the epitaxial garnet are discussed for containment of the bubble lattice. Experimental work on input/output tracks, storage loops, gates, generators, and magneto-resistive detectors for a prototype device are discussed. Potential final device architectures are described with modeling of power consumption, data rates, and access times. Appendices compare the self-structured bubble memory from the device and system perspectives with other non-volatile memory technologies
Healthy Lifestyles for People with Disabilities
People with disabilities are more susceptible to compromised health status and preventable secondary conditions. A Healthy Lifestyles curriculum was developed as a health promotion program for people with disabilities. Using the curriculum, ten free 2½-day workshops were provided for people with various disabilities in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Workshops were conducted in collaboration with local entities such as Centers for Independent Living. The workshops took an integrated approach to health, addressing connections among physical, social, emotional, and spiritual health, and health through meaningful activities. During workshops, the participants obtained health information and experienced healthy activities such as yoga and non-impact aerobics, both tailored for people with disabilities. At the end of the workshop, each participant identified two healthy lifestyle goals to work toward. Progress and/or barriers in accomplishing those goals were shared in support groups for 6-9 months. Preliminary results indicate early and sustained improvements in health behaviors and health-related attitudes. The Healthy Lifestyles program offers a promising approach to promoting health among people with disabilities
A dispersion theoretical approach to the threshold amplitudes of pion photoproduction
We give predictions for the partial wave amplitudes of pion photoproduction
near threshold by means of dispersion relations at fixed t. The free parameters
of this approach are determined by a fit to experimental data in the energy
range 160 MeV 420 MeV. The observables near threshold are
found to be rather sensitive to the amplitudes in the resonance region, in
particular to the (1232) and (1440). We obtain a good agreement
with the existing threshold data for both charged and neutral pion production.
Our predictions also agree well with the results of chiral perturbation theory,
except for neutral pion production off the neutron.Comment: 16 pages LATEX including 4 postscript figure
The position and the residues of the delta resonance pole in pion photoproduction
We have analyzed the and multipole
amplitudes of pion photoproduction in the framework of fixed- dispersion
relations. Applying the speed plot technique to our results for these
multipoles, we have determined the position and the residues of the
(1232) resonance pole. The pole is found at total energy MeV on the second Riemann sheet, and the ratio of the electric and
magnetic residues is , resulting in an E2/M1

Classical versus quantum dynamics of the atomic Josephson junction
We compare the classical (mean-field) dynamics with the quantum dynamics of
atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in double-well potentials. The quantum
dynamics are computed using a simple scheme based upon the Raman-Nath
equations. Two different methods for exciting a non-equilbrium state are
considered: an asymmetry between the wells which is suddenly removed, and a
periodic time oscillating asymmetry. The first method generates wave packets
that lead to collapses and revivals of the expectation values of the
macroscopic variables, and we calculate the time scale for these revivals. The
second method permits the excitation of a single energy eigenstate of the
many-particle system, including Schroedinger cat states. We also discuss a band
theory interpretation of the energy level structure of an asymmetric
double-well, thereby identifying analogies to Bloch oscillations and Bragg
resonances. Both the Bloch and Bragg dynamics are purely quantum and are not
contained in the mean-field treatment.Comment: 31 pages, 14 figure
TaLoS: secure and transparent TLS termination inside SGX enclaves
We introduce TaLoS1, a drop-in replacement for existing transport layer security (TLS) libraries that protects itself from a malicious environment by running inside an Intel SGX trusted execution environment. By minimising the amount of enclave transitions and reducing the overhead of the remaining enclave transitions, TaLoS imposes an overhead of no more than 31% in our evaluation with the Apache web server and the Squid proxy
A unitary isobar model for pion photo- and electroproduction on the proton up to 1 GeV
A new operator for pion photo- and electroproduction has been developed for
nuclear applications at photon equivalent energies up to 1 GeV. The model
contains Born terms, vector mesons and nucleon resonances (,
, , , , and
). The resonance contributions are included taking into account
unitarity to provide the correct phases of the pion photoproduction multipoles.
The dependence of electromagnetic resonance vertices is described with
appropriate form factors in the electromagnetic helicity amplitudes. Within
this model we have obtained good agreement with the experimental data for pion
photo- and electroproduction on the nucleon for both differential cross
sections and polarization observables. The model can be used as a starting

(Correcting) misdiagnoses of asthma: A cost effectiveness analysis

Objective: to determine whether a secondary-screening-program to establish a correct diagnosis of asthma in those who report a physician diagnosis of asthma is cost effective.Method: Randomly selected physician-diagnosed-asthmatic subjects from 8 Canadian cities were studied with an extensive diagnostic algorithm to rule-in, or rule-out, a correct diagnosis of asthma. Subjects in whom the diagnosis of asthma was excluded were followed up for 6-months and data on asthma medications and heath care utilization was obtained. Economic analysis was performed to estimate the incremental lifetime costs associated with secondary screening of previously diagnosed asthmatic subjects. Analysis was from the perspective of the Canadian healthcare system and is reported in Canadian dollars.Results: Of 540 randomly selected patients with physician diagnosed asthma 150 (28%; 95%CI 19-37%) did not have asthma when objectively studied. 71% of these misdiagnosed patients were on some asthma medications. Incorporating the incremental cost of secondary-screening for the diagnosis of asthma, we found that the average cost savings per 100 individuals screened was 4,588-$69,278).Conclusion: Cost savings primarily resulted from lifetime costs of medication use averted in those who had been misdiagnosed.This work was funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research, Canada and the University Of Ottawa Division Of Respiratory Medicine
