In situ determination of nitrogen content in InGaAsN quantum wells
The growth of InGaAsN/GaAs multiple quantum well structures by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy is monitored by in situ reflectometry. The nitrogen incorporation is found to depend superlinearly on the precursor flow and a threshold value for the flow is observed. By in situmeasurements of the InGaAsN quantum well samples with a fixed indium content, the change in the reflectance during the quantum wellgrowth is found to be linearly dependent on the quantum well nitrogen content. A model to determine the nitrogen content already during the growth is developed. Moreover, the field of application of in situ reflectance monitoring is extended from thick layers to thin layers, including quantum wells.Peer reviewe
Vacuum energy: quantum hydrodynamics vs quantum gravity
We compare quantum hydrodynamics and quantum gravity. They share many common
features. In particular, both have quadratic divergences, and both lead to the
problem of the vacuum energy, which in the quantum gravity transforms to the
cosmological constant problem. We show that in quantum liquids the vacuum
energy density is not determined by the quantum zero-point energy of the phonon
modes. The energy density of the vacuum is much smaller and is determined by
the classical macroscopic parameters of the liquid including the radius of the
liquid droplet. In the same manner the cosmological constant is not determined
by the zero-point energy of quantum fields. It is much smaller and is
determined by the classical macroscopic parameters of the Universe dynamics:
the Hubble radius, the Newton constant and the energy density of matter. The
same may hold for the Higgs mass problem: the quadratically divergent quantum
correction to the Higgs potential mass term is also cancelled by the
microscopic (trans-Planckian) degrees of freedom due to thermodynamic stability

Observation of Apparently Zero-Conductance States in Corbino Samples
Using Corbino samples we have observed oscillatory conductance in a
high-mobility two-dimensional electron system subjected to crossed microwave
and magnetic fields. On the strongest of the oscillation minima the conductance
is found to be vanishingly small, possibly indicating an insulating state

Use of oral health care services in Finnish adults - results from the cross-sectional Health 2000 and 2011 Surveys
Background: During the 2000s, two major legislative reforms concerning oral health care have been implemented in Finland. One entitled the whole population to subsidized care and the other regulated the timeframes of access to care. Our aim was, in a cross-sectional setting, to assess changes in and determinants of use of oral health care services before the first reform in 2000 and after both reforms in 2011. Methods: The data were part of the nationally representative Health 2000 and 2011 Surveys of adults aged >= 30 years and were gathered by interviews and questionnaires. The outcome was the use of oral health care services during the previous year. Determinants of use among the dentate were grouped according to Andersen's model: predisposing (sex, age group), enabling (education, recall, dental fear, habitual use of services, household income, barriers of access to care), and need (perceived need, self-rated oral health, denture status). Chi square tests and logistic regression analyses were used for statistical evaluation. Results: No major changes or only a minor increase in overall use of oral health care services was seen between the study years. An exception were those belonging to oldest age group who clearly increased their use of services. Also, a significant increase in visiting a public sector dentist was observed, particularly in the age groups that became entitled to subsidized care in 2000. In the private sector, use of services decreased in younger age groups. Determinants for visiting a dentist, regardless of the service sector, remained relatively stable. Being a regular dental visitor was the most significant determinant for having visited a dentist during the previous year. Enabling factors, both organizational and individual, were emphasized. They seemed to enable service utilization particularly in the private sector. Conclusions: Overall changes in the use of oral health care services were relatively small, but in line with the goals set for the reform. Older persons increased use of services in both sectors, implying growing need. Differences between public and private sectors persisted, and recall, costs of care and socioeconomic factors steered choices between the sectors, sustaining inequity in access to care.Peer reviewe
Novel Amdovirus in Gray Foxes
We used viral metagenomics to identify a novel parvovirus in tissues of a gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus). Nearly full genome characterization and phylogenetic analyses showed this parvovirus (provisionally named gray fox amdovirus) to be distantly related to Aleutian mink disease virus, representing the second viral species in the Amdovirus genus

Nonlinear effects in microwave photoconductivity of two-dimensional electron systems
We present a model for microwave photoconductivity of two-dimensional
electron systems in a magnetic field which describes the effects of strong
microwave and steady-state electric fields. Using this model, we derive an
analytical formula for the photoconductivity associated with photon- and
multi-photon-assisted impurity scattering as a function of the frequency and
power of microwave radiation. According to the developed model, the microwave
conductivity is an oscillatory function of the frequency of microwave radiation
and the cyclotron frequency which turns zero at the cyclotron resonance and its
harmonics. It exhibits maxima and minima (with absolute negative conductivity)
at the microwave frequencies somewhat different from the resonant frequencies.
The calculated power dependence of the amplitude of the microwave
photoconductivity oscillations exhibits pronounced sublinear behavior similar
to a logarithmic function. The height of the microwave photoconductivity maxima
and the depth of its minima are nonmonotonic functions of the electric field.
It is pointed to the possibility of a strong widening of the maxima and minima
due to a strong sensitivity of their parameters on the electric field and the
presence of strong long-range electric-field fluctuations. The obtained

Future Contingents and the Logic of Temporal Omniscience
At least since Aristotle’s famous 'sea-battle' passages in On Interpretation 9, some substantial minority of philosophers has been attracted to the doctrine of the open future--the doctrine that future contingent statements are not true. But, prima facie, such views seem inconsistent with the following intuition: if something has happened, then (looking back) it was the case that it would happen. How can it be that, looking forwards, it isn’t true that there will be a sea battle, while also being true that, looking backwards, it was the case that there would be a sea battle? This tension forms, in large part, what might be called the problem of future contingents. A dominant trend in temporal logic and semantic theorizing about future contingents seeks to validate both intuitions. Theorists in this tradition--including some interpretations of Aristotle, but paradigmatically, Thomason (1970), as well as more recent developments in Belnap, et. al (2001) and MacFarlane (2003, 2014)--have argued that the apparent tension between the intuitions is in fact merely apparent. In short, such theorists seek to maintain both of the following two theses: (i) the open future: Future contingents are not true, and (ii) retro-closure: From the fact that something is true, it follows that it was the case that it would be true. It is well-known that reflection on the problem of future contingents has in many ways been inspired by importantly parallel issues regarding divine foreknowledge and indeterminism. In this paper, we take up this perspective, and ask what accepting both the open future and retro-closure predicts about omniscience. When we theorize about a perfect knower, we are theorizing about what an ideal agent ought to believe. Our contention is that there isn’t an acceptable view of ideally rational belief given the assumptions of the open future and retro-closure, and thus this casts doubt on the conjunction of those assumptions
