The Economic Impact of the University of Virginia: How a Major Research University Affects the Local and State Economies

The University of Virginia, by providing world-class educational opportunities to citizens of the state, has played an important role in the lives of Virginians since its founding in 1819. The University enhances economic opportunity and provides a steady stream of citizens prepared to assume positions of leadership in business and in public service. In carrying out its core missions of education, research, and service, U.Va. has a vital impact on its community, on its region, and on the entire state. A complete picture of the economic impact of the University requires both a close-up lens, for the impact on the local community, and a wide-angle lens, for the impact on the state as a whole. Earlier studies of this sort have concentrated mostly on the local effects of university spending. This study extends the earlier work by adding to the traditional local economic impact analysis an overview of how a large public research university can contribute to the economy of an entire state. CO observations of the expanding envelope of IRC plus 10216

High-sensitivity emission profiles were observed for the transition of C12O16 and C13O16 towards IRC + or - 10216. It appears that the spherically symmetric uniform mass-outflow model proposed by Morris is necessary to describe the line profiles. The outflow appears to be slightly accelerated, having a velocity of 15 km/sec at the edges of the CO cloud, compared with 12 km/sec for the more centrally confined molecules

Large diameter astromast development, phase 1

Coilable-longeron lattice columns called Astromasts (trademark) were manufactured for a variety of spacecraft missions. These flight structures varied in diameter from 0.2 to 0.5 meter (9 to 19 in.), and the longest Astromast of this type deploys to a length of 30 meters (100 feet). A double-laced diagonal Astromast design referred to as the Supermast (trademark) which, because it has shorter baylengths than an Astromast, is approximately four times as strong. The longeron cross section and composite material selection for these structures are limited by the maximum strain associated with stowage and deployment. As a result, future requirements for deployable columns with high stiffness and strength require the development of both structures in larger diameters. The size and polydispersity of silica nanoparticles under simulated hot spring conditions

The nucleation and growth of silica nanoparticles in supersaturated geothermal waters was simulated using a flow-through geothermal simulator system. The effect of silica concentration ([SiO2]), ionic strength (IS), temperature (T) and organic additives on the size and polydispersity of the forming silica nanoparticles was quantified. A decrease in temperature (58 to 33°C) and the addition of glucose restricted particle growth to sizes <20 nm, while varying [SiO2] or ISdid not affect the size (30-35 nm) and polydispersity (±9 nm) observed at 58°C. Conversely, the addition of xanthan gum induced the development of thin films that enhanced silica aggregation

Angular limb deformities affecting the canine radius and ulna : classification using the center of rotation of angulation method

We hypothesized that 1) antebrachial ALDs would be more complex with respect to multiplicity in chondrodystrophic dogs, and 2) more complex ALDs would exhibit a higher incidence of concurrent joint radiographic disease. Medical records from 2006 to 2013 were searched and cases included of dogs diagnosed with thoracic limb lameness attributable to antebrachial ALDs with orthogonal radiographs or CT scans of the affected antebrachium. Classification of the deformity in the frontal plane, and the presence of sagittal plane angulation, torsion, and adjacent joint radiographic disease were determined and compared. Thirty-five uniapical, 70 biapical, and 1 multiapical deformities in the frontal plane were identified. The incidence of biapical deformities was statistically higher in chondrodystrophic versus non-chondrodystrophic dogs (P = 0.02). When breeds were combined, biapical deformities were associated with a significantly higher incidence of adjacent joint radiographic disease (P = 0.049); more frequently resulting in elbow disease (P = 0.022). Overall, 82% of the 106 limbs had radiographic evidence of either elbow or carpal joint disease at the time of presentation. In dogs with limb deformities, particularly chondrodystrophic dogs, biapical deformities are common. Adjacent joint radiographic disease should be evaluated in all patients presenting for antebrachial deformities

Procedures used to map residential land cover on the Orlando, Florida, Urban fringe zone are detailed. The NASA Bureau of the Census Applications Systems Verification and Transfer project and the test site are described as well as the LANDSAT data used as the land cover information sources. Both single-date LANDSAT data processing and multitemporal principal components LANDSAT data processing are described. A summary of significant findings is included
