    Books or Baskets: Compromising the Education and Future of Black Student-Athletes

    In this paper, I discuss the challenges and inequalities that Black male athletes face while playing college sports, particularly basketball and football at PWIs. I explore how this focus on sports pushes these individuals to focus on athletics rather than academics, as they are there on scholarships and are focused primarily on representing their schools and becoming professional athletes. I discuss multiple factors that play into these student-athletes\u27 idea that athletics are more important than academics. Using multiple studies, I give information and statistics on the outcomes of these athletes. I also provide limitations of the studies I use so that others can expand the information given and contribute to this topic in the future

    Quality Improvement for Well Child Care

    Presented to the Faculty of University of Alaska Anchorage in Partial Fulfillment of Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCEThe American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Bright Futures (BF) guidelines for well child care were designed to provide quality pediatric care. Adherence to AAP-BF guidelines improves: screenings, identification of developmental delay, immunization rates, and early identification of children with special healthcare needs. The current guideline set is comprehensive and includes thirty one well child exams, thirty three universal screening exams and one hundred seventeen selective screening exams. Many providers have difficulty meeting all guideline requirements and are at risk of committing Medicaid fraud if a well exam is coded and requirements are not met. The goal of this quality improvement project was to design open source and adaptable templates for each pediatric age group to improve provider adherence to the BF guidelines. A Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) quality improvement model was used to implement the project. Templates were created for ages twelve months to eighteen years and disseminated to a pilot clinic in Anchorage, Alaska. The providers were given pre-implementation and postimplementation surveys to determine the efficacy and usefulness of the templates. Templates were determined to be useful and efficient means in providing Bright Futures focused well child care.     Wills and other evidence related to the married Mary Hampson and her sister-in-law the never married Katherine Hampson place each within associative networks and detail their financial and emotional situations throughout their lives. Mary Hampson’s printed autobiography and legal documents detailing years of marital abuse reveal the loss of her small fortune and her financial destitution that contributed to her inability to maintain her familial and class associations. In contrast, her sister-in-law the never married Katherine Hampson died possessed of wealth that increased dramatically under her financial management. Katherine Hampson’s detailed will illustrates a complex associative network that reveals her familial connectedness and emotional well-being throughout her life. The cases of these two women challenge normative conceptions of the relationship between marital status and financial, social, and emotional stability in early modern England

    The Psychosocial Effects of the Li-Fraumeni Education and Early Detection (LEAD) Program on Indivdiuals with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome

    Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is a hereditary cancer syndrome that leads to an increased risk of multiple cancers. In the past five years new screening protocols have been developed that provide improved screening options for individuals with LFS. However, very little has been published on the psychosocial impact of these screening protocols. The goals of this study were to determine how participation in screening impacts individuals psychosocially, to examine the benefits and drawbacks of screening, and to evaluate possible barriers to continued screening. This qualitative study consisted of phone interviews with 20 individuals that took part in an LFS screening program at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Data analysis showed that benefits of screening include early detection, peace of mind, centralized screening, knowledge providing power, and screening making LFS seem more livable. Perceived drawbacks included logistical issues, difficulty navigating the system, screening being draining, and significant negative emotional reactions such as anxiety, fear, and skepticism. Regardless of the emotions that were present, 100% of participants plan on continuing screening in the program. Our data indicates that the perceived benefits of screening outweigh the drawbacks of screening. Individuals in this screening program appear to have improved psychosocial well-being because of their access to the screening program
