A Comparison of the Ovulation Method With the CUE Ovulation Predictor in Determining the Fertile Period
The purpose of this study was to compare the CUE Ovulation Predictor with the ovulation method in determining the fertile period. Eleven regularly ovulating women measured their salivary and vaginal electrical resistance (ER) with the CUE, observed their cervical-vaginal mucus, and measured their urine for a luteinizing hormone (LH) surge on a daily basis. Data from 21 menstrual cycles showed no statistical difference (T= 0.33, p= 0.63) between the CUE fertile period, which ranged from 5 to 10 days (mean = 6.7 days, SD = 1.6), and the fertile period of the ovulation method, which ranged from 4 to 9 days (mean = 6.5 days, SD = 2.0). The CUE has potential as an adjunctive device in the learning and use of natural family planning methods

A Student Response System for Increasing Engagement, Motivation, and Learning in High Enrollment Lectures
Student response systems (SRS) are devices that allow students to provide categorical and numerical responses to questions embedded within a lecture, and the responses can be tallied and scored in various ways to provide immediate feedback to the students and/or professors. In the fall of 2004 at the University of Missouri – Rolla, questions were systematically integrated into large general chemistry lecture sections, and students used the response system to answer. In order to evaluate the system, students’ test scores were compared with previous years, and a survey was administered with the aim of evaluating the system at the end of the course when SRS was used. Test scores indicated substantial improvement from previous years. In addition, survey results indicated that a significant majority of the students found that the SRS made the course more engaging, motivational, and increased learning. Qualitative analyses of students’ open-ended responses provided support and additional insights for the quantitative analyses
Inhibition of large conductance calcium-dependent potassium channel by Rho-kinase contributes to agonist-induced vasoconstriction
We tested the hypothesis that Rho-kinase inhibits the large-conductance, calcium and voltage dependent potassium (BKCa) channels thereby promoting vasoconstriction. Our results show that the Rho-kinase inhibitor, Y-27632, induced concentration-dependent relaxation in rat mesenteric artery. The selective BKCa channel inhibitors, iberiotoxin (0.1 mM) and tetraethylammonium (10 mM) increased the EC50 of Y-27632 more than 2-fold and decreased Y-27632-induced maximum relaxation (P<0.05). In the inside-out patch clamp configuration, constitutively active Rho-kinase (1mg/ml) attenuated BKCa channel activity induced by protein kinase G (PKG) (P<0.05). Y-27632 (10 mM) reversed the inhibitory effect of active Rhokinase (P<0.01). Furthermore, in the presence of Y-27632, addition of active Rho-kinase had no effect on PKG-stimulated BKCa channel activity. Taken together, our data suggest that Rho-kinase negatively regulates BKCa channels, thus providing a novel mechanism though which Rho-kinase increases smooth muscle contraction.Keywords: Rho, smooth muscle, hyperpolarization, vascular reactivity, mesenteric artery, patch clam
Public crowdsourcing: Analyzing the role of government feedback on civic digital platforms
Government organizations increasingly use crowdsourcing platforms to interact with citizens and integrate their requests in designing and delivering public services. Drawing on attribution theory, this study asks how the causal attributions of the government response to a citizen request affect continued participation in crowdsourcing platforms. To test our hypotheses, we use a 7-year dataset of both online requests from citizens to government and government responses to citizen requests. We focus on citizen requests that are denied by government, and find that the reasoning for denying a request is related with continued participation behavior. Citizens are less willing to collaborate further with government via the platform, when their requests are denied although the locus of causality is with the government. This study contributes to research on the role of responsiveness in digital interaction between citizens and government and highlights the importance of rationale transparency to sustain citizen participation
