Periodically rippled graphene: growth and spatially resolved electronic structure

We studied the growth of an epitaxial graphene monolayer on Ru(0001). The graphene monolayer covers uniformly the Ru substrate over lateral distances larger than several microns reproducing the structural defects of the Ru substrate. The graphene is rippled with a periodicity dictated by the difference in lattice parameter between C and Ru. The theoretical model predict inhomogeneities in the electronic structure. This is confirmed by measurements in real space by means of scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. We observe electron pockets at the higher parts of the ripples.Comment: 5 page

Multiple and Precessing Collimated Outflows in the Planetary Nebula IC 4634

With its remarkable double-S shape, IC 4634 is an archetype of point-symmetric planetary nebulae (PN). In this paper, we present a detailed study of this PN using archival HST WFPC2 and ground-based narrow-band images to investigate its morphology, and long-slit spectroscopic observations to determine its kinematics and to derive its physical conditions and excitation. The data reveal new structural components, including a distant string of knots distributed along an arc-like feature 40"-60" from the center of the nebula, a skin of enhanced [O III]/H-alpha ratio enveloping the inner shell and the double-S feature, and a triple-shell structure. The spatio-kinematical study also finds an equatorial component of the main nebula that is kinematically independent from the bright inner S-shaped arc. We have investigated in detail the bow shock-like features in IC 4634 and found that their morphological, kinematical and emission properties are consistent with the interaction of a collimated outflow with surrounding material. Indeed, the morphology and kinematics of some of these features can be interpreted using a 3D numerical simulation of a collimated outflow precessing at a moderate, time-dependent velocity. Apparently, IC 4634 has experienced several episodes of point-symmetric ejections oriented at different directions with the outer S-shaped feature being related to an earlier point-symmetric ejection and the outermost arc-like string of knots being the relic of an even much earlier point-symmetric ejection. There is tantalizing evidence that the action of these collimated outflows has also taken part in the shaping of the innermost shell and inner S-shaped arc of IC 4634.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

Efeito do sombreamento natural na produtividade e na composição química de capim elefante no Acre.

No estado do Acre, a cobertura vegetal predominante é a floresta tropical úmida, com elevada diversidade de espécies por hectare. Neste áreas, a principal atividade econômica, no último século, tem sido o extrativismo do látex da seringueira (Hevea brasiliense) e a coleta da castanha-do-brasil (Bertholletia excelsa). Entretanto, nos últimos 30 anos, a desestruturação do sistema extrativo da borracha nos seringais nativos, a criação de projetos de colonização e a implantação e expansão da atividade pecuária transformaram a economia do setor primário do Acre. Levantamento de espécies vegetais da Mata Atlântica com potencial medicinal.

RESUMO: Este trabalho refere-se ao levantamento de espécies vegetais de ocorrência espontânea desde herbáceas até arbóreas com potencial medicinal. A fazenda situa-se em Ubatuba, em uma região de Mata Atlântica (Floresta Ombrófila Densa Sub Montana). Foi realizada uma visita ao local e foram coletados materiais botânicos com potencial medicinal. Todo o material foi levado a Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP), campus Jaboticabal, onde foram montadas exsicatas, no total de 57, que estão depositadas no Herbarium JABOTI (JABU) desta unidade. Foram feitas identificações taxonômicas dos exemplares, onde foram identificadas uma subespécie, 23 espécies, 33 gêneros, 44 famílias e 13 espécimes não foram identificados botanicamente. De acordo com as identificações foi realizada uma revisão bibliográfica mais detalhada das principais famílias com potencial medicinal

Proliferação de brotos de cultivares de bananeira em cinco subcultivos em diferentes concentrações de benzilaminopurina a cada subcultivo.

Mudas de bananeira de qualidade que proporcionem eficiência e segurança nos projetos de implantação ou substituições de bananais é um dos principais gargalos da cadeia produtiva da banana. A muda micropropagada permite alcança a qualidade desejada, pois tem qualidade genética e fitossanitária, além do considerável aumento do número de plantas dentro de curto espaço de tempo. O objetivo foi avaliar o comportamento de três cultivares de bananeira em cinco subcultivos de multiplicação de brotos usando concentrações diferentes de BAP a cada subcultivo. O experimento foi realizado no laboratório de biotecnologia e recursos genéticos da Embrapa Amazônia Oriental. A cultura foi estabelecida em meio básico de estabelecimento (1⁄2MS + BAP 2,5 mg.L-1 + PVP 0,4 %, solidificado com Phytagel 0,2 % + Sulfato de Estreptomicina 100 mg.L-1 e pH 6,1). Após 72 horas foi feita a transferência dos explantes intumescidos para meio de cultura de indução de brotos, MS completo com diferentes concentrações de benzilaminopurina (BAP 4,0 mg.L-1; 3,5 mg.L-1; 3,0 mg.L- 1 ; 2,5 mg.L-1; 2,0 mg.L-1) que corresponderam respectivamente, às concentrações de BAP no primeiro, segundo, terceiro, quarto e quinto subcultivo. O tempo de cultivo em cada subcultivo de multiplicação dos brotos foi de quatro a seis semanas. A taxa média de brotos para as três cultivares foi de 1,25; 2,56; 2,52; 2,47; 2,50 respectivamente, nos cinco subcultivos realizados, não havendo diferença significativa de número de brotos entre cultivares e subcultivos nas diferentes concentrações de BAP.PIBIC-2011

A computational multiscale approach to couple hygro-mechanical responses of large-scale masonry walls

We present a computational multiscale approach to the nonlinear problems of humidity diffusion and mechanical damage of large-scale masonry walls, and their coupling in terms of the effects of the humidity diffusion on the mechanical response and the effects of the mechanical degradation on the diffusion process. Such an approach allows us to recover, both efficiently and accurately, the complex nonlinear response of large-scale walls, which are in general hard to be solved by means of standard numerical tools. Two representative tests of two- and three-storey walls are here analyzed, and the corresponding results reported and commented, aiming to show how samples like these can potentially serve as reference solutions for more applicative purposes
