As the amount of data available to pilots increases significantly in the near future, expert system technology will be needed to assist pilots in assimilating that information. Some other desirable characteristics of an automation-assisted system for weather data acquisition, dissemination, and assimilation are also described

    Using Numerical Modeling to Simulate Space Capsule Ground Landings

    Experimental work is being conducted at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration s (NASA) Langley Research Center (LaRC) to investigate ground landing capabilities of the Orion crew exploration vehicle (CEV). The Orion capsule is NASA s replacement for the Space Shuttle. The Orion capsule will service the International Space Station and be used for future space missions to the Moon and to Mars. To evaluate the feasibility of Orion ground landings, a series of capsule impact tests are being performed at the NASA Langley Landing and Impact Research Facility (LandIR). The experimental results derived at LandIR provide means to validate and calibrate nonlinear dynamic finite element models, which are also being developed during this study. Because of the high cost and time involvement intrinsic to full-scale testing, numerical simulations are favored over experimental work. Subsequent to a numerical model validated by actual test responses, impact simulations will be conducted to study multiple impact scenarios not practical to test. Twenty-one swing tests using the LandIR gantry were conducted during the June 07 through October 07 time period to evaluate the Orion s impact response. Results for two capsule initial pitch angles, 0deg and -15deg , along with their computer simulations using LS-DYNA are presented in this article. A soil-vehicle friction coefficient of 0.45 was determined by comparing the test stopping distance with computer simulations. In addition, soil modeling accuracy is presented by comparing vertical penetrometer impact tests with computer simulations for the soil model used during the swing tests

    Phase III, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Evaluation of Pregabalin for Alleviating Hot Flashes, N07C1

    PURPOSE: Hot flashes are a common problem for which effective and safe treatments are needed. The current trial was conducted on the basis of preliminary promising data that pregabalin decreased hot flashes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial design was used to compare pregabalin at target doses of 75 mg twice daily and 150 mg twice daily with a placebo. Hot flash frequencies and scores (frequency times mean severity) were recorded daily during a baseline week and for six treatment weeks. The primary end point for this study was the change-from-baseline hot flash score during treatment week 6 between the 150 mg twice daily target pregabalin treatment and placebo. Nonparametric Wilcoxon rank sum tests, two-sample t tests, and chi(2) tests were used to compare the primary and secondary hot flash efficacy end points between pregabalin treatments and placebo. RESULTS: Hot flash score changes available for 163 patients during the sixth treatment week compared with a baseline week decreased by 50%, 65%, and 71% in the placebo, and target 75 mg twice daily and 150 mg twice daily pregabalin arms, respectively (P = .009 and P = .007, comparing respective pregabalin arms to the placebo arm). While some toxicities were significantly more common in the pregabalin arms, being more evident with the higher dose, pregabalin was generally well tolerated by most patients. CONCLUSION: Pregabalin decreases hot flashes and is reasonably well tolerated. A target dose of 75 mg twice daily is recommended. Its effects appear to be roughly comparable to what has been reported with gabapentin and with some newer antidepressant

    Densities of internally mixed organic-inorganic particles from mobility diameter measurements of aerodynamically classified aerosols

    Accurate knowledge of particle density is essential for many aspects of aerosol science. Yet, density is often characterized poorly and incompletely for internally mixed particles, particularly for dry particles, with previous studies focused primarily on deliquescent (aqueous) droplets. Instead, densities for dry internally mixed particles are often inferred from mass composition measurements in combination with predictive models assuming ideal mixing, with the accuracy of such models not estimated. We determined particle densities from mobility diameter measurements (using a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer, SMPS) for dried particles classified by their aerodynamic size (using an Aerosol Aerodynamic Classifier, AAC) for a range of two-component organic-inorganic particles containing known proportions of organic and inorganic species. We examined all permutations of mixing between four different organic (water soluble nigrosin dye, citric acid, polyethylene glycol-400, and ascorbic acid) and three different inorganic (sodium chloride, ammonium sulfate, and sodium nitrate) species. The accuracy and precision in our measured particle densities were ∼5% and ∼1%, respectively, for nonvolatile particles. Substantial deviations in particle density from ideal mixing (up to 20%) were observed. We tested descriptions of the non-ideal mixing for our systems by representing the volume change of mixing using Redlich-Kister (RK) polynomials in terms of mass fraction or in terms of mole fraction, with both approaches performing similarly.</p

    NPHS2 mutation analysis shows genetic heterogeneity of steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome and low post-transplant recurrence.BackgroundMutations of NPHS2 are causative in familial autosomal-recessive (AR) and sporadic steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS). This study aimed to determine the spectrum of NPHS2 mutations and to establish genotype-phenotype correlations.MethodsNPHS2 mutation analysis was performed in 338 patients from 272 families with SRNS: 81 families with AR SRNS, 172 patients with sporadic SRNS, and 19 patients with diffuse mesangial sclerosis (DMS).ResultsTwenty-six different pathogenic NPHS2 mutations were detected, including 13 novel mutations. The mutation detection rate was 43% for familial AR and 10.5% for sporadic SRNS, confirming genetic heterogeneity. No pathogenic NPHS2 mutations were found in DMS patients. Age at onset in patients with two pathogenic mutations was earlier, especially in cases with frameshift, truncating, and the R138Q missense mutations. Patients with only one NPHS2 mutation or variant had late-onset NS. Triallelic inheritance was observed in one patient with a homozygous R138Q mutation and a de novo NPHS1 mutation. Among 32 patients with two NPHS2 mutations who underwent kidney transplantation, only one developed late recurrence of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Among 25 patients with sporadic SRNS and post-transplantation recurrence, we detected a heterozygous NPHS2 mutation in one case, and heterozygous variants/polymorphisms in 3 cases.ConclusionPatients with two pathogenic NPHS2 mutations present with early-onset SRNS and very low incidence of post-transplantation recurrence. Heterozygous NPHS2 variants may play a role in atypical cases with mild, late-onset course, and recurrence after transplantation

    Perceived Effects of COVID-19 Crisis on Budget Consumption of Filipino Families

    This study was conducted to determine the effects of the COVID19 crisis on the Budget Consumption of Filipino Families during the Enhanced Community Quarantine in some regions of Luzon, the Philippines, using the descriptive-inferential research methods. 237 Filipino families were the respondents of this study. It determined the families' profile, daily spending, and its test of significant difference before and during the Luzon-Wide Enhanced Community lockdown; the perceived effects of COVID19 Crisis on Budget Consumption; and its test of significant difference. It was revealed that: majority came from Region 5, from a family with 1 or more family members are government employee, student, with only one family member is working with irregular source of income, with an average combined monthly income of less than P10,000, and living together with 4-6 persons at home; the average daily consumption of the respondents before and during COVID19 crisis was within P100.00-P500.00; there was a highly significant difference in the daily spending of Families before and during Luzon-Wide Enhanced Community lockdown; they Moderately Agree that  Food consumption expenses; quantity of consumption of goods; income supplements were affected; and realized the importance of savings; they Agree that the COVID19 crisis changed their budget consumption preferences;  and Fairly Agree that they incurred loans and borrowings due to the Luzon-Wide Enhanced Community lockdown; there were significant difference on the Perceived Effects of COVID19 Crisis on Budget Consumption of Filipino Families among the regions, source of income and average combined monthly income of the family
