Internal Anisotropy of Collision Cascades
We investigate the internal anisotropy of collision cascades arising from the
branching structure. We show that the global fractal dimension cannot give an
adequate description of the geometrical structure of cascades because it is
insensitive to the internal anisotropy. In order to give a more elaborate
description we introduce an angular correlation function, which takes into
account the direction of the local growth of the branches of the cascades. It
is demonstrated that the angular correlation function gives a quantitative
description of the directionality and the interrelation of branches. The power
law decay of the angular correlation is evidenced and characterized by an
exponent and an angular correlation length different from the radius of
gyration. It is demonstrated that the overlapping of subcascades has a strong
effect on the angular correlation.Comment: RevteX, 8 pages, 6 .eps figures include
Boundary K-matrices and the Lax pair for 1D open XYZ spin-chain
We analysis the symmetries of the reflection equation for open model
and find their solutions case by case. In the general open boundary
conditions, the Lax pair for open one-dimensional spin-chain is given.Comment: LaTeX, 17 pages, errors in references correcte
Reconstruction of Fractional Quantum Hall Edges
We study the interplay of interaction, confining potential and effects of
finite temperature at the edge of a quantum Hall liquid. Our exact
diagonalization calculation indicates that edge reconstruction occurs in the
fractional quantum Hall regime for a variety of confining potential, including
ones that correspond to a "sharp" edge. Our finite temperature Hartree-Fock
calculation for integer quantum Hall edges indicates that reconstruction is
suppressed above certain temperature. We discuss the implication of our results
on recent edge tunneling and microwave absorption experiments.Comment: Revised version. 5 papges RevTex with 5 eps figures embedded in the

SCUBA Mapping of Spitzer c2d Small Clouds and Cores
We present submillimeter observations of dark clouds that are part of the
Spitzer Legacy Program, From Molecular Cores to Planet-Forming Disks (c2d). We
used the Submillimetre Common User's Bolometer Array to map the regions
observed by Spitzer by the c2d program to create a census of dense molecular
cores including data from the infrared to the submillimeter. In this paper, we
present the basic data from these observations: maps, fluxes, and source
attributes. We also show data for an object just outside the Perseus cloud that
was serendipitously observed in our program. We propose that this object is a
newly discovered, evolved protostar.Comment: 37 pages, accepted to The Astronomical Journa
Comment on `Dynamical properties of small polarons'
We show that the conclusion on the breakdown of the standard small polaron
theory made recently by E.V. deMello and J. Ranninger (Phys. Rev. B 55, 14872
(1997)) is a result of an incorrect interpretation of the electronic and
vibronic energy levels of the two-site Holstein model. The small polaron
theory, when properly applied, agrees well with the numerical results of these
authors. Also we show that their attempt to connect the properties of the
calculated correlation functions with the features of the intersite electron
hopping is unsuccessful.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.
Avalanche precursors of failure in hierarchical fuse networks
We study precursors of failure in hierarchical random fuse network models
which can be considered as idealizations of hierarchical (bio)materials where
fibrous assemblies are held together by multi-level (hierarchical) cross-links.
When such structures are loaded towards failure, the patterns of precursory
avalanche activity exhibit generic scale invariance: Irrespective of load,
precursor activity is characterized by power-law avalanche size distributions
without apparent cut-off, with power-law exponents that decrease continuously
with increasing load. This failure behavior and the ensuing super-rough crack
morphology differ significantly from the findings in non-hierarchical
structures
New homogeneous iron abundances of double-mode Cepheids from high-resolution echelle spectroscopy
Aims: We define the relationship between the double-mode pulsation of
Cepheids and metallicity in a more accurate way, determine the empirical
metallicities of double-mode Cepheids from homogeneous, high-resolution
spectroscopic data, and study of the period-ratio -- metallicity dependence.
Methods: The high S/N echelle spectra obtained with the FEROS spectrograph were
analyzed using a self-developed IRAF script, and the iron abundances were
determined by comparing with synthetic spectra assuming LTE. Results: Accurate
[Fe/H] values of 17 galactic beat Cepheids were determined. All these stars
have solar or slightly subsolar metallicity. Their period ratio P1/P0 shows
strong correlation with their derived [Fe/H] values. The corresponding period
ratio -- metallicity relation has been evaluated.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted in A&
Determinant representations of scalar products for the open XXZ chain with non-diagonal boundary terms
With the help of the F-basis provided by the Drinfeld twist or factorizing
F-matrix for the open XXZ spin chain with non-diagonal boundary terms, we
obtain the determinant representations of the scalar products of Bethe states
of the model.Comment: Latex file, 28 pages, based on the talk given by W. -L. Yang at

Inversion Symmetry and Critical Exponents of Dissipating Waves in the Sandpile Model
Statistics of waves of topplings in the Sandpile model is analysed both
analytically and numerically. It is shown that the probability distribution of
dissipating waves of topplings that touch the boundary of the system obeys
power-law with critical exponent 5/8. This exponent is not indeendent and is
related to the well-known exponent of the probability distribution of last
waves of topplings by exact inversion symmetry s -> 1/s.Comment: 5 REVTeX pages, 6 figure
