    A Rotating Charged Black Hole Solution in f(R) Gravity

    In the context of f(R) theories of gravity, we address the problem of finding a rotating charged black hole solution in the case of constant curvature. The new metric is obtained by solving the field equations and we show that the behavior of it is typical of a rotating charged source. In addition, we analyze the thermodynamics of the new black hole. The results ensures that the thermodynamical properties in f(R) gravities are qualitatively similar to those of standard General Relativity.Comment: 9 pages, no figure

    Is Bevacizumab Effective in Inhibiting the Growth of Recurrent Pterygium?

    Objective: The objective of this selective EBM review is to determine whether or not Bevacizumab is an effective treatment in inhibiting the growth of recurrent pterygium. Study Design: Review of three published, English language randomized controlled trials published in 2010, 2012, and 2013. Data Sources: Three randomized controlled trials measuring the efficacy of Bevacizumab to inhibit the growth of recurrent pterygium were found using PubMed and OVID databases. Outcome(s) Measured: The severity and progression of pterygium recurrence as well as corneal neovascularization were the main outcomes measured. Conjunctival injection, thickness, and size of the fibrovascular tissue were examined in subjects using ophthalmic evaluation including visual acuity testing, applanation tonometry, lit-lamp biomicroscopic examination, slit-lamp photography, indirect ophthalmoscopy, and corneal photographs. Results: In the study by Fallah, all groups failed, meaning fibrovascular tissue stretched onto the cornea. However, the mean duration for invasion of cornea in study group patients was significantly longer than for control group patients. The study by Lekhanont showed that Bevacizumab significantly transiently decreased the conjunctival injection. However, true recurrence was found in 62 of 80 patients with no statistically significant difference among the groups. In the study by Ozgurhan, pterygium recurrence was not noted in any patients in the study group, but was noted in 2 of 22 eyes in the control group. Moreover, corneal neovascularization was noted in 5 of 22 eyes in the control group but in none of the patients of the study group. Conclusion: The results of two of the randomized trials showed that Bevacizumab delays the recurrence of impending recurrent pterygium, but does not completely inhibit it. One of the randomized trials showed that Bevacizumab was an effective therapy for reducing recurrent pterygium and corneal neovascularization, but results were not statistically significant. Overall consistency was not provided and the data was inconclusive. All trials were limited due to small sample size and lack of follow-up studies

    Mathematics is an interesting but a very challenging subject. Several studies reported different factors which lead to students’ poor performance in this subject. This study generally aimed to assess the entry mathematics performance of the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology. Specifically, the study aimed to determine theinfluence of the student’s profile, attitudes and beliefs towards mathematics and the student’s impression to mathematics teachers towards their entry mathematics performance. It employed the descriptive-correlational research design. The findings revealed that the level of the entry mathematics performance of the students wasgood. It was disclosed that students have a positive attitude and beliefs towards Mathematics and impressions to Mathematics teachers. Students who have shown positive attitude, beliefs and impressions to Math teachers tend to perform better. Hence, performance in Mathematics can be improved by developing a positiveattitude and beliefs of students towards the subject.     Modeling and visualizing uncertainty in gene expression clusters using Dirichlet process mixtures

    Although the use of clustering methods has rapidly become one of the standard computational approaches in the literature of microarray gene expression data, little attention has been paid to uncertainty in the results obtained. Dirichlet process mixture (DPM) models provide a nonparametric Bayesian alternative to the bootstrap approach to modeling uncertainty in gene expression clustering. Most previously published applications of Bayesian model-based clustering methods have been to short time series data. In this paper, we present a case study of the application of nonparametric Bayesian clustering methods to the clustering of high-dimensional nontime series gene expression data using full Gaussian covariances. We use the probability that two genes belong to the same cluster in a DPM model as a measure of the similarity of these gene expression profiles. Conversely, this probability can be used to define a dissimilarity measure, which, for the purposes of visualization, can be input to one of the standard linkage algorithms used for hierarchical clustering. Biologically plausible results are obtained from the Rosetta compendium of expression profiles which extend previously published cluster analyses of this data

    Black holes in modified gravity theories

    In the context of f(R)f(R) gravity theories, the issue of finding static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions is addressed. Two approaches to study the existence of such solutions are considered: first, constant curvature solutions, and second, the general case (without imposing constant curvature) is also studied. Performing a perturbative expansion around the Einstein-Hilbert action, it is found that only solutions of the Schwarzschild-(Anti-) de Sitter type are present (up to second order in perturbations) and the explicit expressions for these solutions are provided in terms of the f(R)f(R) function. Finally we consider the thermodynamics of black holes in Anti-de Sitter space-time and study their local and global stability.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.
