A digitally controlled system for effecting and presenting a selected electrical resistance

    Get PDF
A digitally controlled resistance generator is described, in which resistors having values selected according to an expression 2(sup N-1)(R), where N is equal to the number of terms in the expression, and R is equal to the lowest value of resistance, are electrically inserted into a resistive circuit in accordance with a parallel binary signal provided by an analog-to-digital converter or a programmable computer. This binary signal is coupled via optical isolators which, when activated by a logical 1, provides a negative potential to some or all of the gate inputs of the normally on field effect transistors which, when on, shorts out the associated resistor. This applied negative potential turns the field effect transistors off and electrically inserts the resistor coupled between the source terminal and the drain terminal of that field effect transistor into the resistive circuit between the terminals

Results of TC-1 boost pump icing tests in the space power facility

    Get PDF
A series of tests were conducted in the space power facility to investigate the failure of the Centaur oxidizer boost pump during the Titan/Centaur proof flight February 11, 1974. The three basic objectives of the tests were: (1) demonstrate if an evaporative freezing type failure mechanism could have prevented the pump from operating, (2) determine if steam from the exhaust of one of the attitude control engine could have entered a pump seal cavity and caused the failure, and (3) obtain data on the heating effects of the exhaust plume from a hydrogen peroxide attitude control engine

Track and capture of the orbiter with the space station remote manipulator system

    Get PDF
Results of the first study using the real-time, man-in-the-loop Systems Engineering Simulator (SES) for track and capture of the Space Shuttle Orbiter with the space station manipulator are presented. The objectives include evaluation of the operational coordination required between the orbiter pilot and the space station manipulator operator, evaluation of the locations and required number of closed-circuit television cameras, and evaluation of the orbiter grapple fixture clearance geometry. The SES is a premium quality real-time facility with full fidelity orbiter and space station crew workstations and cockpits

Fleming's bound for the decay of mixed states

Fleming's inequality is generalized to the decay function of mixed states. We show that for any symmetric hamiltonian hh and for any density operator ρ\rho on a finite dimensional Hilbert space with the orthogonal projection Π\Pi onto the range of ρ\rho there holds the estimate \Tr(\Pi \rme^{-\rmi ht}\rho \rme^{\rmi ht}) \geq\cos^{2}((\Delta h)_{\rho}t) for all real tt with (Δh)ρtπ/2.(\Delta h)_{\rho}| t| \leq\pi/2. We show that equality either holds for all tRt\in\mathbb{R} or it does not hold for a single tt with 0<(Δh)ρtπ/2.0<(\Delta h)_{\rho}| t| \leq\pi/2. All the density operators saturating the bound for all tR,t\in\mathbb{R}, i.e. the mixed intelligent states, are determined.Comment: 12 page

Kondo effect in coupled quantum dots with RKKY interaction: Finite temperature and magnetic field effects

We study transport through two quantum dots coupled by an RKKY interaction as a function of temperature and magnetic field. By applying the Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) method we obtain the transmission and the linear conductance. At zero temperature and magnetic field, we observe a quantum phase transition between the Kondo screened state and a local spin singlet as the RKKY interaction is tuned. Above the critical RKKY coupling the Kondo peak is split. However, we find that both finite temperature and magnetic field restore the Kondo resonance. Our results agree well with recent transport experiments on gold grain quantum dots in the presence of magnetic impurities.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
