    Transforming the Archival Classroom for a Connected Reality

    The Archival / Preservation Education SIG panel engages with interconnected external pressures and curricular goals in the archival classroom.     Morphological Observations of Mineralizing Pericardium Cardiac Grafts

    Pericardial patch grafters were implanted in the hearts of young sheep for periods ranging from two to 120 days. Explants seven to 21 days old revealed the formation of a pseudoneointima (PNI) on the blood contacting surface of the pericardium. The PNI was more heavily mineralized than the pericardium. Mineralization was most intense on the blood contacting surface of the PNI and on the chamber surface of the pericardium. After three weeks of implantation, the PNI was much thinner and was organized into a thin fibrous capsule without any signs of mineralization.     Mineralization of Short Term Pericardial Cardiac Patch Grafts

    Glutaraldehyde fixed patch grafts of bovine pericardium were implanted in myocardial windows in young (3-4 months old) sheep. The samples were retrieved after one to three weeks for study with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis (EDX). A layer of porous material (pseudoneointima, PNI), consisting mostly of a dense mesh of fibers interspersed with blood cells, was noted to form on the blood contacting surface of the graft. Four distinct sets of mineralization were noted in the retrieved grafts: (1) at the blood contacting surface of the PNI; (2) within the PNI at the junction between layers of PNI with differing densities; (#) near the junction of PNI and pericardium (but in the PNI); and (4) within the pericardium. In both the PNI and pericardium the mineral was shown by EDX analysis to contain both calcium and phosphorous indicating the mineral to be a calcium phosphate. Mineralization in the PNI differed from that in the pericardium; in the PNI it was deposited in discrete regions and apparently in association with thrombi while in the pericardium it was distributed diffusely within the collagen matrix, which may influence its formation

    Metrics of progress in the understanding and management of threats to Australian birds

    Although evidence‐based approaches have become commonplace for determining the success of conservation measures for the management of threatened taxa, there are no standard metrics for assessing progress in research or management. We developed 5 metrics to meet this need for threatened taxa and to quantify the need for further action and effective alleviation of threats. These metrics (research need, research achievement, management need, management achievement, and percent threat reduction) can be aggregated to examine trends for an individual taxon or for threats across multiple taxa. We tested the utility of these metrics by applying them to Australian threatened birds, which appears to be the first time that progress in research and management of threats has been assessed for all threatened taxa in a faunal group at a continental scale. Some research has been conducted on nearly three‐quarters of known threats to taxa, and there is a clear understanding of how to alleviate nearly half of the threats with the highest impact. Some management has been attempted on nearly half the threats. Management outcomes ranged from successful trials to complete mitigation of the threat, including for one‐third of high‐impact threats. Progress in both research and management tended to be greater for taxa that were monitored or occurred on oceanic islands. Predation by cats had the highest potential threat score. However, there has been some success reducing the impact of cat predation, so climate change (particularly drought), now poses the greatest threat to Australian threatened birds. Our results demonstrate the potential for the proposed metrics to encapsulate the major trends in research and management of both threats and threatened taxa and provide a basis for international comparisons of evidence‐based conservation science

    Olfactory testing does not predict ÎČ-amyloid, MRI measures of neurodegeneration or vascular pathology in the British 1946 birth cohort.

    OBJECTIVE: To explore the value of olfactory identification deficits as a predictor of cerebral ÎČ-amyloid status and other markers of brain health in cognitively normal adults aged ~ 70 years. METHODS: Cross-sectional observational cohort study. 389 largely healthy and cognitively normal older adults were recruited from the MRC National Survey of Health and Development (1946 British Birth cohort) and investigated for olfactory identification deficits, as measured by the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test. Outcome measures were imaging markers of brain health derived from 3 T MRI scanning (cortical thickness, entorhinal cortex thickness, white matter hyperintensity volumes); 18F florbetapir amyloid-PET scanning; and cognitive testing results. Participants were assessed at a single centre between March 2015 and January 2018. RESULTS: Mean (± SD) age was 70.6 (± 0.7) years, 50.8% were female. 64.5% had hyposmia and 2.6% anosmia. Olfaction showed no association with ÎČ-amyloid status, hippocampal volume, entorhinal cortex thickness, AD signature cortical thickness, white matter hyperintensity volume, or cognition. CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE: In the early 70s, olfactory function is not a reliable predictor of a range of imaging and cognitive measures of preclinical AD. Olfactory identification deficits are not likely to be a useful means of identifying asymptomatic amyloidosis. Further studies are required to assess if change in olfaction may be a proximity marker for the development of cognitive impairment

    INTRODUCTION: Cortical thickness has been proposed as a biomarker of Alzheimer's disease (AD)- related neurodegeneration, but the nature of its relationship with amyloid beta (A?) deposition and white matter hyperintensity volume (WMHV) in cognitively normal adults is unclear. METHODS: We investigated the influences of A? status (negative/positive) and WMHV on cortical thickness in 408 cognitively normal adults aged 69.2 to 71.9 years who underwent 18F-Florbetapir positron emission tomography (PET) and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Two previously defined Alzheimer's disease (AD) cortical signature regions and the major cortical lobes were selected as regions of interest (ROIs) for cortical thickness. RESULTS: Higher WMHV, but not A? status, predicted lower cortical thickness across all participants, in all ROIs. Conversely, when A?-positive participants were considered alone, higher WMHV predicted higher cortical thickness in a temporal AD-signature region. DISCUSSION: WMHV may differentially influence cortical thickness depending on the presence or absence of A?, potentially reflecting different pathological mechanisms

    Senescence of song revealed by a long-term study of the Seychelles warbler (Acrocephalus sechellensis).

    Senescence is widespread in nature, often resulting in diminishing survival or reproduction with age, but its role in age-dependent variation in sexual traits is often poorly understood. One reason is that few studies of sexual traits consider non-linear relationships with age, or only consider a narrow range of years relative to the life span of the species. Birdsong has evolved to allow assessment of conspecific quality in numerous bird species. Whilst theory and empirical work suggests that song may become more elaborate with age, there are a paucity of long-term studies testing whether song is associated with age or longevity. In particular, the occurrence of song senescence has rarely been demonstrated. Using an exceptional long-term dataset for the Seychelles warbler (Acrocephalus sechellensis), we analysed relationships between male song, age, survival, and longevity. This species is a long-lived songbird with early life increases, followed by senescent declines, in survival and reproduction. The study population (Cousin Island, Seychelles) is a closed population, with no depredation of adults, providing an excellent opportunity to study senescence in free-living animals. We tested whether song traits were related to age at recording, future survival, longevity, and territory quality. We found age-dependent changes in five song traits (duration, maximum frequency, peak frequency of songs, and duration and frequency bandwidth of trills). Relationships with age were quadratic, indicating reversal in the expression of song coinciding with the onset of senescence in reproduction and survival in this species. One song trait (trill bandwidth) had a quadratic relationship with future survival, but no song traits were related to longevity, suggesting age-related patterns were not the result of selective disappearance. Our study provides one of the first examples of functional senescence in song, offering new insights into avian senescence. Late-life declines in avian song, and possibly other sexual traits, may be more common than currently known, and may play a fundamental role in age-dependent changes in reproductive success
