    Platelet deposition studies on copolyether urethanes modified with poly(ethylene oxide)

    Pellethane ® 2363 80A films and tubings were chemically modified and the effect of these modifications on platelet deposition was studied. Grafting of high molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) and graft polymerization of methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) 400 methacrylate resulted in surfaces with a good water wettability. The increased hydrophilicity of these modified surfaces could be demonstrated by contact angle measurements. The platelet deposition was investigated with tubings in a capillary flow system, using different types of perfusates. Platelet deposition from a buffer-containing perfusate on surfaces modified with either high molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) or methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) 400 methacrylate was almost absent and less than on Pellethane 2363 80A. Using a citrated plasmacontaining perfusate the amount of deposited platelets on Pellethane 2363 80A modified with high molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) was low and about the same as on unmodified surfaces. However, a marked reduced platelet deposition compared to unmodified Pellethane 2363 80A was found when the platelets were activated by Ca2+ ionophore. The improved blood compatibility of the modified Pellethane 2363 80A tubings obviously indicates the favourable effect of the presence of grafted PEO on the surface

    Over the past five years I have had the opportunity to work with children and youth, ages birth to eighteen, in a variety of environments. The settings in which I have interacted with children include nonprofit agency environments, after school programs, church environments, parks and recreation programs, individual and small group counseling sessions, classroom guidance settings, and home environments. My own observations and experiences along with those of parents, school staff, university faculty, fellow undergraduate and graduate students, and co-workers have supported my conclusion that children from early childhood to high school youth struggle with knowing how to appropriately respond to negative feelings. Anger outbursts are a common occurrence with the children and youth I have encountered. Countless children I have worked with also fail to appropriately deal with disappointment. Many children grow up in homes where negative feelings are neglected or denied. The purpose of this curriculum is to give children a lens through which to recognize negative emotions, a language to articulate their feelings, and strategies, skills, and tools to cope with their negative feelings in healthy ways

    Geometric dependence of Nb-Bi2{_2}Te3{_3}-Nb topological Josephson junction transport parameters

    Superconductor-topological insulator-superconductor Josephson junctions have been fabricated in order to study the width dependence of the critical current, normal state resistance and flux periodicity of the critical current modulation in an external field. Previous literature reports suggest anomalous scaling in topological junctions due to the presence of Majorana bound states. However, for most realised devices, one would expect that trivial 2Ï€2\pi-periodic Andreev levels dominate transport. We also observe anomalous scaling behaviour of junction parameters, but the scaling can be well explained by mere geometric effects, such as the parallel bulk conductivity shunt and flux focusing

    Experimental realization of SQUIDs with topological insulator junctions

    We demonstrate topological insulator (Bi2_2Te3_3) dc SQUIDs, based on superconducting Nb leads coupled to nano-fabricated Nb-Bi2_2Te3_3-Nb Josephson junctions. The high reproducibility and controllability of the fabrication process allows the creation of dc SQUIDs with parameters that are in agreement with design values. Clear critical current modulation of both the junctions and the SQUID with applied magnetic fields have been observed. We show that the SQUIDs have a periodicity in the voltage-flux characteristic of Φ0\Phi_0, of relevance to the ongoing pursuit of realizing interferometers for the detection of Majorana fermions in superconductor- topological insulator structures

    MIREOT: the Minimum Information to Reference an External Ontology Term

    While the Web Ontology Language (OWL) provides a mechanism to import ontologies, this mechanism is not always suitable. First, given the current state of editing tools and the issues they have working with large ontologies, direct OWL imports have sometimes proven impractical for day-to-day development. Second, ontologies chosen for integration may be under active development and not aligned with the chosen design principles. Importing heterogeneous ontologies in their entirety may lead to inconsistencies or unintended inferences. In this paper we propose a set of guidelines for importing required terms from an external resource into a target ontology. We describe the guidelines, their implementation, present some examples of application, and outline future work and extensions
