    Information Technologies and System Evaluation: Uses and Practices in the Online Context

    The purpose of this paper is to have a clear understanding of user’s management strategies’ in an online information technologies environment. The contribution focuses on a recent exploratory study carried out with notarial e-tourism platforms for a better understanding of design evaluation and uses. The conceptual framework links various dimensions with a strategic perspective in the information science and technologies domains: online information design evaluation. We develop a conceptual model emerging from the review of existing literature. We identify that homepage construction, users’ satisfaction, Web 2.0 technologies and social media initiatives are key factors affecting positively the website design effectiveness. We stress that even though the different dimensions can be considered separately, as they have an interdependent and a positive correlation with platform performance. Research finding are used as a basis for developing prescriptive guidelines to better direct the activities for designing and developing e-commerce online platforms. &nbsp

    Extraction of the Volatile Oils of Dictyopteris membranacea Batters 1902 by Focused Microwave-assisted Hydrodistillation and Supercritical Carbon Dioxide: Empirical Kinetic Modelling Approach, Apparent Solubility and Rate Constants

    Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (SCCO2) and focused microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (FMAHD) were used comparatively to isolate the volatile oils of the brown alga Dictyopteris membranacea from the crude ether extract. The volatiles fractions were analysed by GC/MS, the major compounds were: dictyopterene A, 6-butyl-1,4-cycloheptadiene, 1-undecen-3-one, 1,4-undecadien-3-one, (3-oxoundec-4-enyl) sulphur, tetradecanoic acid, hexadecanoic acid, 3-hexyl-4,5-dithiacycloheptanone, and albicanol. A kinetics study of the extraction of the volatile fractions obtained by the two processes was carried out, an external calibration allowed to quantify the content of the main metabolites. Empirical models were applied to adjust the experimental kinetics values but also to determine the values of apparent solubilities for SCCO2 and the rate constants for FMAHD. The results obtained revealed that the SCCO2 process was characterized by the coexistence of three distinct phases. For FMAHD, the extraction mechanism included two steps.     Energy-Conserving Lattice Boltzmann Thermal Model in Two Dimensions

    A discrete velocity model is presented for lattice Boltzmann thermal fluid dynamics. This model is implemented and tested in two dimensions with a finite difference scheme. Comparison with analytical solutions shows an excellent agreement even for wide temperature differences. An alternative approximate approach is then presented for traditional lattice transport schemes

    Shedding Light on the Chemical Diversity of Ectopic Calcifications in Kidney Tissues: Diagnostic and Research Aspects

    In most industrialized countries, different epidemiologic studies show that chronic renal failure is dramatically increasing. Such major public health problem is a consequence of acquired systemic diseases such as type II diabetes, which is now the first cause for end stage renal failure. Furthermore, lithogenic diseases may also induce intratubular crystallization, which may finally result in end-stage renal failure (ESRF). Up to now, such rare diseases are often misdiagnosed. In this study, based on twenty four biopsies, we show that SR ”FTIR (Synchrotron Radiation-”Fourier transform infrared) spectroscopy constitutes a significant opportunity to characterize such pathological ”calcifications giving not only their chemical composition but also their spatial distribution in the tissues. This experimental approach offers new opportunities to the clinicians to describe at the cell level the physico-chemical processes leading to the formation of the pathological calcifications which lead to ESRF

    Current-induced microwave excitation of a domain wall confined in a magnetic wire with bi-axial anisotropy

    We studied the current-induced magnetization dynamics of a domain wall confined in a magnetic wire with bi-axial anisotropy. We showed that above the threshold current density, breathing-mode excitation, where the thickness of the domain wall oscillates, is induced by spin-transfer torque. We found that the breathing-mode can be applied as a source of microwave oscillation because the resistance of the domain wall is a function of the domain wall thickness. In a current sweep simulation, the frequency of the breathing-mode exhibits hysteresis because of the confinement.Comment: 5 pages 4 figure

    Lattice Boltzmann simulations of soft matter systems

    This article concerns numerical simulations of the dynamics of particles immersed in a continuum solvent. As prototypical systems, we consider colloidal dispersions of spherical particles and solutions of uncharged polymers. After a brief explanation of the concept of hydrodynamic interactions, we give a general overview over the various simulation methods that have been developed to cope with the resulting computational problems. We then focus on the approach we have developed, which couples a system of particles to a lattice Boltzmann model representing the solvent degrees of freedom. The standard D3Q19 lattice Boltzmann model is derived and explained in depth, followed by a detailed discussion of complementary methods for the coupling of solvent and solute. Colloidal dispersions are best described in terms of extended particles with appropriate boundary conditions at the surfaces, while particles with internal degrees of freedom are easier to simulate as an arrangement of mass points with frictional coupling to the solvent. In both cases, particular care has been taken to simulate thermal fluctuations in a consistent way. The usefulness of this methodology is illustrated by studies from our own research, where the dynamics of colloidal and polymeric systems has been investigated in both equilibrium and nonequilibrium situations.Comment: Review article, submitted to Advances in Polymer Science. 16 figures, 76 page

    Construction and characterization of two BAC libraries representing a deep-coverage of the genome of chicory (Cichorium intybus L., Asteraceae)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Asteraceae represents an important plant family with respect to the numbers of species present in the wild and used by man. Nonetheless, genomic resources for Asteraceae species are relatively underdeveloped, hampering within species genetic studies as well as comparative genomics studies at the family level. So far, six BAC libraries have been described for the main crops of the family, <it>i.e</it>. lettuce and sunflower. Here we present the characterization of BAC libraries of chicory (<it>Cichorium intybus </it>L.) constructed from two genotypes differing in traits related to sexual and vegetative reproduction. Resolving the molecular mechanisms underlying traits controlling the reproductive system of chicory is a key determinant for hybrid development, and more generally will provide new insights into these traits, which are poorly investigated so far at the molecular level in Asteraceae.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Two bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) libraries, CinS2S2 and CinS1S4, were constructed from <it>Hin</it>dIII-digested high molecular weight DNA of the contrasting genotypes C15 and C30.01, respectively. C15 was hermaphrodite, non-embryogenic, and <it>S</it><sub>2</sub><it>S</it><sub>2 </sub>for the <it>S</it>-locus implicated in self-incompatibility, whereas C30.01 was male sterile, embryogenic, and <it>S</it><sub>1</sub><it>S</it><sub>4</sub>. The CinS2S2 and CinS1S4 libraries contain 89,088 and 81,408 clones. Mean insert sizes of the CinS2S2 and CinS1S4 clones are 90 and 120 kb, respectively, and provide together a coverage of 12.3 haploid genome equivalents. Contamination with mitochondrial and chloroplast DNA sequences was evaluated with four mitochondrial and four chloroplast specific probes, and was estimated to be 0.024% and 1.00% for the CinS2S2 library, and 0.028% and 2.35% for the CinS1S4 library. Using two single copy genes putatively implicated in somatic embryogenesis, screening of both libraries resulted in detection of 12 and 13 positive clones for each gene, in accordance with expected numbers.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This indicated that both BAC libraries are valuable tools for molecular studies in chicory, one goal being the positional cloning of the <it>S</it>-locus in this Asteraceae species.</p
