Hard Rescattering in QCD and High Energy Two-Body Photodisintegration of the Deuteron
Photon absorption by a quark in one nucleon followed by its high momentum
transfer interaction with a quark in the other may produce two nucleons with
high relative momentum. We sum the relevant quark rescattering diagrams, to
show that the scattering amplitude depends on a convolution between the large
angle scattering amplitude, the hard photon-quark interaction vertex and
the low-momentum deuteron wave function. The computed cross sections are in
reasonable agreement with the data.Comment: Four pages Latex, uses espcrc1.sty. Presented at 15th International

Next generation software environments : principles, problems, and research directions
The past decade has seen a burgeoning of research and development in software environments. Conferences have been devoted to the topic of practical environments, journal papers produced, and commercial systems sold. Given all the activity, one might expect a great deal of consensus on issues, approaches, and techniques. This is not the case, however. Indeed, the term "environment" is still used in a variety of conflicting ways. Nevertheless substantial progress has been made and we are at least nearing consensus on many critical issues. The purpose of this paper is to characterize environments, describe several important principles that have emerged in the last decade or so, note current open problems, and describe some approaches to these problems, with particular emphasis on the activities of one large-scale research program, the Arcadia project. Consideration is also given to two related topics: empirical evaluation and technology transition. That is, how can environments and their constituents be evaluated, and how can new developments be moved effectively into the production sector
Measurement of air and nitrogen fluorescence light yields induced by electron beam for UHECR experiments
Most of the Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) experiments and projects
(HiRes, AUGER, TA, EUSO, TUS,...) use air fluorescence to detect and measure
extensive air showers (EAS). The precise knowledge of the Fluorescence Light
Yield (FLY) is of paramount importance for the reconstruction of UHECR. The
MACFLY - Measurement of Air Cherenkov and Fluorescence Light Yield - experiment
has been designed to perform such FLY measurements. In this paper we will
present the results of FLY in the 290-440 nm wavelength range for dry air and
pure nitrogen, both excited by electrons with energy of 1.5 MeV, 20 GeV and 50
GeV. The experiment uses a 90Sr radioactive source for low energy measurement
and a CERN SPS electron beam for high energy. We find that the FLY is
proportional to the deposited energy (E_d) in the gas and we show that the air
fluorescence properties remain constant independently of the electron energy.
At the reference point: atmospheric dry air at 1013 hPa and 23C, the ratio
FLY/E_d=17.6 photon/MeV with a systematic error of 13.2%.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in Astroparticle

QCD Rescattering and High Energy Two-Body Photodisintegration of the Deuteron
Photon absorption by a quark in one nucleon followed by its high momentum
transfer interaction with a quark in the other may produce two final-state
nucleons with high relative momentum. We sum the relevant quark rescattering
diagrams, to show that the scattering amplitude depends on a convolution
between the large angle scattering amplitude, the hard photon-quark
interaction vertex and the low-momentum deuteron wave function. The computed
absolute values of the cross section are in reasonable agreement with the data.Comment: 4 pages, revised version to be published in Phys. Rev. Let
Air fluorescence measurements in the spectral range 300-420 nm using a 28.5 GeV electron beam
Measurements are reported of the yield and spectrum of fluorescence, excited
by a 28.5 GeV electron beam, in air at a range of pressures of interest to
ultra-high energy cosmic ray detectors. The wavelength range was 300 - 420 nm.
System calibration has been performed using Rayleigh scattering of a nitrogen
laser beam. In atmospheric pressure dry air at 304 K the yield is 20.8 +/- 1.6
photons per MeV.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures. Submitted to Astroparticle Physic
Indication of asymptotic scaling in the reactions H, He and
It is shown that the differential cross sections of the reactions and measured at c.m.s.scattering angle
in the interval of the deuteron beam energy 0.5 - 1.2 GeV demonstrate the
scaling behaviour,, which follows from constituent
quark counting rules. It is found also that the differential cross section of
the elastic scattering at follows
the scaling regime at beam energies 0.5 - 5 GeV. These data are
parameterized here using the Reggeon exchange.Comment: 6 pages, Latex, 2 eps figures; final version accepted by Pis'ma v

Search for the Weak Decay of an H Dibaryon
We have searched for a neutral dibaryon decaying via and
. Our search has yielded two candidate events from which we set
an upper limit on the production cross section. Normalizing to the
inclusive production cross section, we find at 90% C.L., for an of mass
2.15 GeV/.Comment: 11 pages, 6 postscript figures, epsfig, aps, preprint, revte
