The retrieval of moving images at Spanish film archives: the oversight of content analysis

In the field of library and information science, content analysis is a crucial task for an effective retrieval of information by users at an archive. In this research, we analyse the current state of this task and the possibilities of retrieval of film information at six Spanish important film archives, interviewing their responsible librarians for film cataloguing and comparing the content fields inside their film cataloguing records used by each one of these six organizations

La responsabilidad ética del documentalista de los medios de comunicación

Cuando se habla de la ética periodística no debe olvidarse hablar también de la ética del documentalista de medios, sobre todo si tenemos en cuenta el poder que éste maneja al gestionar y difundir los documentos o datos informativos que servirán a los periodistas-usuarios para completar, contextualizar, contrastar y/o verificar sus noticias. Por esta razón, y ante la carencia de un código deontológico general aplicable al ámbito de la Documentación Periodística, hemos considerado oportuno analizar algunos de los principios éticos que, a nuestro juicio, deben respetar los documentalistas de medios de comunicación en el desempeño de su profesión, normas deontológicas que atañen tanto a su papel como gestores de la información como al de mediadores en la difusión documental

Una perspectiva histórica del análisis documental de contenido fílmico

Hacemos un recorrido histórico, desde los orígenes del cine hasta la actualidad, por la atención prestada a la importante tarea de análisis documental de contenido, en el caso concreto de los documentos audiovisuales fílmicos, por parte de los investigadores, las filmotecas y las principales instituciones encargadas de elaborar las directrices internacionales de análisis documental y de metadatos para archivos fílmicos: la Federación Internacional de Archivos Fílmicos y el Comité Europeo de Normalización. Comprobamos y analizamos el segundo plano al que ha sido relegada esta labor documental, las deficiencias de las que ha venido acompañada históricamente, así como su efecto en las posibilidades actuales de búsqueda y recuperación de información audiovisual en las filmotecas por parte de los usuarios.We are doing a descriptive timeline, from the origin of film until now, of the attention paid to the important task of content analysis, in the concrete case of films, by researchers, film archives and the main organizations which are responsible for the making of the international cataloguing and metadata standards for film archives: International Federation of Film Archives and European Committee of Standardization. We confirm and analyze the minor role of this task, its historical deficiencies, as well as their effect on the current possibilities of searching and retrieval of moving images by film archives´ users

The selection of press photos

Nuestro objetivo ha sido indagar cuáles serían los criterios selectivos más apropiados para aplicar a los documentos fotoperiodísticos. Para ello, en primer lugar, hemos recopilado y filtrado los criterios selectivos recomendados por numerosos autores consultados, a fin de proponer un método, basado en siete criterios selectivos, que pueda resultarle útil al selector de fotografías de prensa. En segundo lugar, hemos ensayado nuestro modelo de selección, utilizando un corpus de 264 documentos fotoperiodísticos extraídos de los diarios españoles El País y El Mundo, al objeto de explorar su aplicabilidad real y el valor, individual y colectivo, de cada uno de los criterios selectivos aplicados. Los resultados apuntan a una mayoritaria eliminación de las fotografías de prensa analizadas, debido a factores tales como la poca producción propia, la poca originalidad, la poca actualidad, el poco valor testimonial o el escaso valor para la investigación.Our objective has been to find out the most appropriate selective criterions to apply to press photos. To achieve it, we have firstly collected and filtered the selective criterions recommended by many consulted authors, in order to propose a method based on seven selective criterions, which can be useful to the selectors of press photos. Secondly, we have tested our model of selection, using a corpus of 264 press photos removed from the Spanish newspapers El País and El Mundo, in order to explore its real applicability and the value, individual and collective, of each one of the applied selective criterions. The results point to a majority elimination of the analyzed press photos, due to factors like the little own production, the little originality, the little testimonial value or the lacking value for research

Journalistic Ethics and Standards in the Spanish Constitution and National Codes of Conduct from the Perspective of Andalusian Journalism Students

This paper focuses on the opinion held by journalism students of the Faculty of Communication of Seville University about the ethical standards set out in the Spanish Constitution (Article 20.1.d) and the country’s codes of conduct. The aim of this paper is to identify the ethical system of values of today’s university students, who have not yet been “contaminated” by the profession and on whom the future of journalism in Spain will ultimately depend. Although the results show that journalism students (both 1st year students and those in their final year) have embraced a fairly solid ethical system of values, they nevertheless believe that the strong influence that economic and political powers currently exert on Spanish media corporations makes it impossible for journalists to cultivate their own work ethic, consequently obliging them to conform to the “unscrupulous” demands of their bosses. Faced with this reality, the authors reflect on the need to reinforce ethical values in the lecture hall as a way of curbing, as soon as possible, the deterioration of journalism that has been detected in Spain

A methodological proposal of content analysis for non-fiction movies at film archives

El análisis de contenido fílmico es una importante tarea documental que ha sido relegada al olvido en nuestro país por parte de los archivos fílmicos y de los teóricos de la documentación audiovisual. Mientras que en los principales centros de documentación televisivos españoles los usuarios pueden ya recuperar selectivamente la información audiovisual, satisfacer esta necesidad informativa no es posible en las filmotecas españolas, algo que se debe en parte a la carencia de propuestas analíticas. Para cubrir este vacío, realizamos el esbozo teórico de un método de análisis de contenido fílmico, tanto a nivel global como escena a escena, para películas documentales de no ficción, producto de reunir las diferentes contribuciones de los documentólogos audiovisuales españoles de las últimas décadas. Al mismo tiempo, aplicamos el método propuesto al largometraje documental 200 Km. (Colectivo Discusión 14, 2003) y valoramos la utilidad y eficacia del método de acuerdo con los resultados obtenidos tras esta primera aplicación experimental.Film content analysis is a crucial archival task which has been forgotten in our country by film archives and the theorists in the field of moving image librarianship. While users can selectively retrieve moving images at the main Spanish TV archives, the satisfaction of this informative need is not possible at Spanish film archives, due in part to the lack of analytical proposals. To fill this void, we are sketching a film content analysis methodology, both globally and scene by scene, for nonfiction movies, as a result of collecting the different contributions by the Spanish theorists during the last decades. We are also applying the methodology to the documentary movie 200 Km. (Group Discusión 14, 2003) and valuing the usefulness and effectiveness of our method, according to the obtained results

The documentary value of the journalist as an author

En el ámbito de la Documentación, un elemento informativo que se considera básico para gestionar la información es la figura del autor. No obstante, y siendo así, son pocos los estudios de Documentación Periodística que se han centrado en el periodista como autor y máximo responsable de la información que leemos en la prensa. En este artículo intentaremos demostrar la importancia documental y periodística que tiene el que el periodista firme sus noticias. Para apoyar nuestros argumentos tomamos como referencia los datos obtenidos del estudio de dos diarios locales de Sevilla: El Correo de Andalucía y Diario de Sevilla.In the field of Information Science, an informative element that is considered to be essential to manage information is the figure of the author. Nevertheless, only a few studies in Journalistic Information Science have focused on the journalist as an author and the main responsible part for the information we read in press. In this article we will try to prove the documentary and journalistic importance of the journalist ´s signature in the news. To back our arguments, we refer to the data taken out of the study of two local newspapers in Sevilla: El Correo de Andalucía and Diario de Sevilla

In this paper, an analysis is conducted on the current state of this task at six major Spanish film libraries by interviewing those responsible for the content analysis of film collections and performing a comparative analysis of the fields related to film content in the most exhaustive document analysis worksheets employed by each one of these six institutions to catalog their film collections.En el campo de la documentación, una tarea fundamental para una eficaz recuperación de información por parte de los usuarios de los sistemas de información es el análisis de contenido. En la presente investigación analizamos el estado actual de esa tarea en seis importantes filmotecas españolas. Film Content Analysis on FIAF Cataloguing Rules and CEN Metadata Standards

Cataloguing manuals published by the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) and the film metadata standards EN 15744 and EN 15907 have proven to be really useful for film archives in the process of film cataloguing. However, beyond the technical or formal aspects of films contemplated on these rules, there are some important aspects about the film content analysis which have not been taken into consideration. We are showing with examples and analyzing all the references to the important task of content analysis on the historical evolution of these standards for film archives, discussing about the possibilities of adoption of more film content fields on them, what would suppose better possibilities of retrieval of film information by the users of film archives, adapting to their needs and to the new era
