Self-assessment of quality of life and aging of Alzheimer development risk adults

ABSTRACT: middle-age adult carriers and non-carriers of mutation E280A in gene Presenilin 1 for Early Onset Familial Alzheimer’s Disease and of elderly adults in Antioquia-Colombia. Study conducted from January 2005 to June 2007. Methodology: descriptive transversal study in which 162 asymptomatic people at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as a genetic consequence or as a consequence of the process of aging. They were subdivided into three groups: 27 carriers of the mutation, 39 non-carriers and 96 elderly adults. The study was conducted at the Neuroscience Group in Medellín (Antioquia) and at a gerontology center in Envigado (Antioquia) named Atardecer. Social-demographic characteristics were analyzed and quality of life and overall aging selfassessment tests were applied, which included the World Health Organization Quality of Life, and the Nürnberg -Self-Evaluation-List respectively. Statistic Analysis: The groups were described and they were compared to the variables of the study using Kruskall Wallis non-parametric ANOVA and Mann-Whitney’s U-test. Results: the mean scores of the instruments to assess quality of life and overall aging of three groups of participants were above 50 points and below 55 points respectively. Conclusions: elderly adults assessed themselves as having a lower quality of life than carriers and non-carriers, especially in the physical health area, and in their perception of aging, in spite of carriers’ conditions, although in general the scores were good in all the groups.RESUMEN: Describir la autovaloración de calidad de vida y del envejecimiento de tres grupos: adultos portadores y no portadores de la mutación E280A en el gen de la Presenilina 1 para Enfermedad de Alzheimer Familiar Precoz, y adultos mayores, en Antioquia-Colombia, estudio realizado entre enero de 2005 y junio de 2007. Metodología: estudio descriptivo transversal donde participaron 162 personas asintomáticas en riesgo de desarrollar Enfermedad de Alzheimer como consecuencia genética o del proceso de envejecimiento, quienes se subdividieron en tres grupos: 27 portadores, 39 no portadores y 96 adultos mayores. Investigación realizada en el Grupo de Neurociencias de la Universidad de Antioquia (Medellín) y en el Centro Gerontológico Atardecer (Envigado). Se analizaron las características sociodemográficas, y se aplicaron pruebas para la autovaloración de la calidad de vida global del envejecimiento: World Health Organization Quality of Life y la Nürnberg -Self-Evaluation-List respectivamente. Análisis estadístico: Se describieron los grupos y se compararon frente a las variables de estudio utilizando el análisis de varianza no paramétrico de Kruskall Wallis y la prueba U de Mann-Whitney. Resultados: las calificaciones medias de los instrumentos para la autovaloración de calidad de vida y global del envejecimiento en los tres grupos de participantes, fueron superiores a 50 puntos e inferiores a 55 puntos respectivamente. Conclusiones: los adultos mayores se autovaloran con menor calidad de vida que los portadores y los no portadores, especialmente en el área de salud física, al igual que en la percepción del envejecimiento, a pesar de las condiciones de los portadores, aunque, en general, todos los grupos las puntuaron bien

Congreso Internacional de Responsabilidad Social: apuestas para el desarrollo regional [Edición 1 / Nov. 6 - 7: 2019 Bogotá D.C.]El Congreso Internacional de Responsabilidad Social “Apuestas para el Desarrollo Regional”, se llevó a cabo los días 6 y 7 de noviembre de 2019 en la ciudad de Bogotá D.C. como un evento académico e investigativo liderado por la Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios -UNIMINUTO – Rectoría Cundinamarca cuya pretensión fue el fomento de nuevos paradigmas, la divulgación de conocimiento renovado en torno a la Responsabilidad Social; finalidad adoptada institucionalmente como postura ética y política que impacta la docencia, la investigación y la proyección social, y cuyo propósito central es la promoción de una “sensibilización consciente y crítica ante las situaciones problemáticas, tanto de las comunidades como del país, al igual que la adquisición de unas competencias orientadas a la promoción y al compromiso con el desarrollo humano y social integral”. (UNIMINUTO, 2014). Dicha postura, de conciencia crítica y sensibilización social, sumada a la experiencia adquirida mediante el trabajo articulado con otras instituciones de índole académico y de forma directa con las comunidades, permitió establecer como objetivo central del evento la reflexión de los diferentes grupos de interés, la gestión de sus impactos como elementos puntuales que contribuyeron en la audiencia a la toma de conciencia frente al papel que se debe asumir a favor de la responsabilidad social como aporte seguro al desarrollo regional y a su vez al fortalecimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible

El estudiante como sujeto investigador de su realidad : otras voces intercambio de saberes y experiencias de los semilleros de investigación

De acuerdo con la importancia estratégica de la investigación como función sustantiva institucional, el Comité de Investigaciones de la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas, de la Universidad de San Buenaventura Cali, viene adelantando procesos de divulgación y apoyo al quehacer investigativo estudiantil. Para ello realiza el encuentro denominado “Intercambio de saberes y experiencias de los semilleros de investigación en la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas”, en el cual participan diferentes programas de la Universidad e instituciones educativas amigas. El encuentro de estudiantes investigadores de la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas se origina en la necesidad de contar con nuestros propios espacios para dar cuenta del qué, para qué y cómo investigan nuestros jóvenes estudiantes. Voces de la gestión territorial. Estrategias complementarias para la conservación de la biodiversidad en Colombia

Colombia es un país con una alta riqueza biológica y cultural, tan diverso en su territorio como en las estrategias de conservación que en él se implementan. Sin embargo, muchas de estas estrategias no se han dado a conocer lo suficiente, lo que hace difícil su articulación a los procesos de gestión y ordenamiento del territorio. Existen algunos avances en su identificación como los ejercicios que se han realizado en los sistemas regionales de áreas protegidas para recopilar la información sobre estrategias complementarias de conservación en sus jurisdicciones, la articulación que realizan organizaciones privadas para identificar las iniciativas de conservación voluntaria por parte de la sociedad civil y el trabajo realizado por comunidades campesinas, indígenas y afrodescendientes para visibilizar sus áreas de conservación. Este libro, por lo tanto, tiene como objetivo visibilizar experiencias de conservación y gestión de la biodiversidad, diferentes a las áreas protegidas, teniendo en cuenta que el Convenio de Diversidad Biológica a través de la Meta Aichi 11 introduce el concepto de otras medidas efectivas de conservación basadas en áreas (OMEC) o áreas conservadas como instrumentos para lograr sistemas de conservación más completos, representativos y efectivamente gestionados (UNEP CDB, 2010). Effects of pre-operative isolation on postoperative pulmonary complications after elective surgery: an international prospective cohort study an international prospective cohort study

We aimed to determine the impact of pre-operative isolation on postoperative pulmonary complications after elective surgery during the global SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. We performed an international prospective cohort study including patients undergoing elective surgery in October 2020. Isolation was defined as the period before surgery during which patients did not leave their house or receive visitors from outside their household. The primary outcome was postoperative pulmonary complications, adjusted in multivariable models for measured confounders. Pre-defined sub-group analyses were performed for the primary outcome. A total of 96,454 patients from 114 countries were included and overall, 26,948 (27.9%) patients isolated before surgery. Postoperative pulmonary complications were recorded in 1947 (2.0%) patients of which 227 (11.7%) were associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Patients who isolated pre-operatively were older, had more respiratory comorbidities and were more commonly from areas of high SARS-CoV-2 incidence and high-income countries. Although the overall rates of postoperative pulmonary complications were similar in those that isolated and those that did not (2.1% vs 2.0%, respectively), isolation was associated with higher rates of postoperative pulmonary complications after adjustment (adjusted OR 1.20, 95%CI 1.05–1.36, p = 0.005). Sensitivity analyses revealed no further differences when patients were categorised by: pre-operative testing; use of COVID-19-free pathways; or community SARS-CoV-2 prevalence. The rate of postoperative pulmonary complications increased with periods of isolation longer than 3 days, with an OR (95%CI) at 4–7 days or ≥ 8 days of 1.25 (1.04–1.48), p = 0.015 and 1.31 (1.11–1.55), p = 0.001, respectively. Isolation before elective surgery might be associated with a small but clinically important increased risk of postoperative pulmonary complications. Longer periods of isolation showed no reduction in the risk of postoperative pulmonary complications. These findings have significant implications for global provision of elective surgical care.
