CP violation in semileptonic tau lepton decays

The leading order contribution to the direct CP asymmetry in tau^{+/-} -> K^{+/-} pi^0 nu_{tau} decay rates is evaluated within the Standard Model. The weak phase required for CP violation is introduced through an interesting mechanism involving second order weak interactions, which is also responsible for tiny violations of the Delta S= Delta Q rule in K_{l3} decays. The calculated CP asymmetry turns out to be of order 10^{-12}, leaving a large window for studying effects of non-standard sources of CP violation in this observable.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, version published in Phys.Rev.

The Impact of Demographic Change on the Accessibility to Public Services for the Elderly on Children of Hannover, Germany

Late in 2009, the German government conducted an exercise to determine population trends for the next 50 years. This study indicated that the German population, which is approximately 82 million, is expected to decrease by 12 to 17 million people as well as experience a significant shift in its demographic profile (Statitistisches Bundesamt, 2009). The most significant finding from this exercise is the projection for a shift in the share of senior citizens and children with respect to the economically active population; children and seniors are expected to account for half of the entire population of Germany, whereas they currently only represent 40%. Additionally, the ratio of senior citizens to children is expected to increase to 2:1 by the year 2040, indicating a trend towards an ageing population. With this expected declining population and changes in the age pyramid, a renewed focus on planning for future investments has been initiated with an eye on effective and efficient resource allocation of social services

Second-harmonic generation of ZnO nanoparticles synthesized by laser ablation of solids in liquids

We report the synthesis of small zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) based colloidal suspensions and the study of second-harmonic generation from aggregated ZnO NPs deposited on glass substrates. The colloidal suspensions were obtained using the laser ablation of solids in liquids technique, ablating a Zn solid target immersed in acetone as the liquid medium, with ns-laser pulses (1064 nm) of a Nd-YAG laser. The per pulse laser fluence, the laser repetition rate frequency and the ablation time were kept constant. The absorption evolution of the obtained suspensions was optically characterized through absorption spectroscopy until stabilization. Raman spectroscopy, SEM and HRTEM were used to provide evidence of the ZnO NPs structure. HRTEM results showed that 5–8 nm spheroids ZnO NPs were obtained. Strong second-harmonic signal is obtained from random ZnO monocrystalline NPs and from aggregated ZnO NPs, suggesting that the high efficiency of the nonlinear process may not depend on the NPs size or aggregation state
