    Congruent families and invariant tensors

Classical results of Chentsov and Campbell state that -- up to constant multiples -- the only 22-tensor field of a statistical model which is invariant under congruent Markov morphisms is the Fisher metric and the only invariant 33-tensor field is the Amari-Chentsov tensor. We generalize this result for arbitrary degree nn, showing that any family of nn-tensors which is invariant under congruent Markov morphisms is algebraically generated by the canonical tensor fields defined in an earlier paper

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the management of synchronous colorectal liver metastasis has changed significantly. Alternative surgical strategies to the classical colorectal-first approach have been proposed. These include the liver-first and combined resections approaches. The objectives of this review were to compare the short- and long-term outcomes for all three approaches. METHODS: A systematic review of comparative studies was performed. Evaluated endpoints included surgical outcomes (5-year overall survival, 30-day mortality, and post-operative complications). Pair-wise and network meta-analysis (NMA) were performed to compare survival outcomes. RESULTS: Eighteen studies were included in this review, reporting on 3,605 patients. NMA and pair-wise meta-analysis of the 5-year overall survival did not show significant difference between the three surgical approaches: combined versus colorectal-first, mean odds ratio (OR) 1.02 (95% CI 0.8-1.28, P = 0.93); liver-first versus colorectal-first, mean OR 0.81 (95% CI 0.53-1.26, P = 0.37); liver-first versus combined, mean OR 0.80 (95% CI 0.52-1.24, P = 0.41). In addition NMA of the 30-day mortality among the three approaches also did not observe statistical difference. Analysis of variance showed that mean post-operative complications of all approaches were comparable (P = 0.51). CONCLUSION: There are considerable differences in the peri-operative management of synchronous CLM patients. This meta-analysis demonstrated no clear statistical surgical outcome or survival advantage towards any of the three approaches. J. Surg. Oncol. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

Studying links between phenotype/genotype and agricultural practices is one of the main topics in agronomy research. Phenotypes can be characterized by informations like age, sex of animals/plants and more and more often with the help of image analysis of their morphology. From now, getting good quality of images for numerous individuals is easy but that leads to design automatic procedures to replace manual exploration of such amount of images. Several bottlenecks have been identified to analyze automatically images. One of them is segmentation of selected area and/or shapes, and another well-known one is setting automatically morphometric landmarks. Landmarks are points on the object which can be used to identify or to classify the objects. It exists a lot of methods to experiment landmarks setting, depending on the image contents. This work has been initiated by using the article of Palaniswamy et al. "Automatic identification of landmarks in digital images"[6]. They proposed a method based on calculus of a probabilistic Hough transform coupling to a template matching algorithm. They applied their method to the Drosophilia wings. In our study, we have gotten a set of 291 beetles . For each one 2D images of 5 different parts of their anatomy have been taken: mandibles left and right, head, pronotum and elytra. The first part of the project was to test how the Palaniswamy’s method could be used to analyze them. We have implemented all the required algorithms to compute positions of mandibles landmarks and compared the obtained results to landmarks which have been manually set by biologists. We will see that even positions automatically obtained are not fully precised, if we used centroid size to characterize mandibles, the size computed from automatic landmarks is closed to this one computed from the manual ones. Future works will focus on definition of a semi-landmarks procedure which would add some features as the measure of the curve between two landmarks

OBJECTIVES: To investigate any gender effect of the beta-1 adrenergic blocker, landiolol, on cardiac performance and energy metabolism in septic rats, and to explore the expression of genes and proteins involved in this process. DESIGN: Randomized animal study. SETTING: University research laboratory. SUBJECTS: Male and female Wistar rats. INTERVENTIONS: One hour after cecal ligation and puncture, male and female rats were randomly allocated to the following groups: sham male, cecal ligation and puncture male, cecal ligation and puncture + landiolol male, sham female, cecal ligation and puncture female, and cecal ligation and puncture + landiolol female. Cardiac MRI was carried out 18 hours after cecal ligation and puncture to assess in vivo cardiac function. Ex vivo cardiac function measurement and P magnetic resonance spectroscopy were subsequently performed using an isovolumic isolated heart preparation. Finally, we assessed cardiac gene and protein expression. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: In males, landiolol increased indexed stroke volume by reversing the indexed end-diastolic volume reduction without affecting left ventricle ejection fraction. In females, landiolol did not increase indexed stroke volume and indexed end-diastolic volume but decreased left ventricle ejection fraction. Landiolol had no effect on ex vivo cardiac function and on high-energy phosphate compounds. The effect of landiolol on the gene expression of natriuretic peptide receptor 3 and on protein expression of phosphorylated-AKT:AKT ratio and endothelial nitric oxide synthase was different in males and females. CONCLUSIONS: Landiolol improved the in vivo cardiac performance of septic male rats while deleterious effects were reported in females. Expression of natriuretic peptide receptor 3, phosphorylated-AKT:AKT, and endothelial nitric oxide synthase are signaling pathways to investigate to better understand the sex differences in sepsis

Exposing errors related to weak memory in GPU applications

© 2016 ACM.We present the systematic design of a testing environment that uses stressing and fuzzing to reveal errors in GPU applications that arise due to weak memory effects. We evaluate our approach on seven GPUS spanning three NVIDIA architectures, across ten CUDA applications that use fine-grained concurrency. Our results show that applications that rarely or never exhibit errors related to weak memory when executed natively can readily exhibit these errors when executed in our testing environment. Our testing environment also provides a means to help identify the root causes of such errors, and automatically suggests how to insert fences that harden an application against weak memory bugs. To understand the cost of GPU fences, we benchmark applications with fences provided by the hardening strategy as well as a more conservative, sound fencing strategy

    Information geometry and sufficient statistics

Information geometry provides a geometric approach to families of statistical models. The key geometric structures are the Fisher quadratic form and the Amari-Chentsov tensor. In statistics, the notion of sufficient statistic expresses the criterion for passing from one model to another without loss of information. This leads to the question how the geometric structures behave under such sufficient statistics. While this is well studied in the finite sample size case, in the infinite case, we encounter technical problems concerning the appropriate topologies. Here, we introduce notions of parametrized measure models and tensor fields on them that exhibit the right behavior under statistical transformations. Within this framework, we can then handle the topological issues and show that the Fisher metric and the Amari-Chentsov tensor on statistical models in the class of symmetric 2-tensor fields and 3-tensor fields can be uniquely (up to a constant) characterized by their invariance under sufficient statistics, thereby achieving a full generalization of the original result of Chentsov to infinite sample sizes. More generally, we decompose Markov morphisms between statistical models in terms of statistics. In particular, a monotonicity result for the Fisher information naturally follows.Comment: 37 p, final version, minor corrections, improved presentatio

Pioglitazone improves fat distribution, the adipokine profile and hepatic insulin sensitivity in non-diabetic end-stage renal disease subjects on maintenance dialysis: a randomized cross-over pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Fat redistribution, increased inflammation and insulin resistance are prevalent in non-diabetic subjects treated with maintenance dialysis. The aim of this study was to test whether pioglitazone, a powerful insulin sensitizer, alters body fat distribution and adipokine secretion in these subjects and whether it is associated with improved insulin sensitivity. TRIAL DESIGN: This was a double blind cross-over study with 16 weeks of pioglitazone 45 mg vs placebo involving 12 subjects. METHODS: At the end of each phase, body composition (anthropometric measurements, dual energy X-ray absorptometry (DEXA), abdominal CT), hepatic and muscle insulin sensitivity (2-step hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp with 2H2-glucose) were measured and fasting blood adipokines and cardiometabolic risk markers were monitored. RESULTS: Four months treatment with pioglitazone had no effect on total body weight or total fat but decreased the visceral/sub-cutaneous adipose tissue ratio by 16% and decreased the leptin/adiponectin (L/A) ratio from 3.63×10-3 to 0.76×10-3. This was associated with a 20% increase in hepatic insulin sensitivity without changes in muscle insulin sensitivity, a 12% increase in HDL cholesterol and a 50% decrease in CRP. CONCLUSIONS/LIMITATIONS: Pioglitazone significantly changes the visceral-subcutaneous fat distribution and plasma L/A ratio in non diabetic subjects on maintenance dialysis. This was associated with improved hepatic insulin sensitivity and a reduction of cardio-metabolic risk markers. Whether these effects may improve the outcome of non diabetic end-stage renal disease subjects on maintenance dialysis still needs further evaluation.
