Theory of enhancement of thermoelectric properties of materials with nanoinclusions
Based on the concept of band bending at metal/semiconductor interfaces as an
energy filter for electrons, we present a theory for the enhancement of the
thermoelectric properties of semiconductor materials with metallic
nanoinclusions. We show that the Seebeck coefficient can be significantly
increased due to a strongly energy-dependent electronic scattering time. By
including phonon scattering, we find that the enhancement of ZT due to electron
scattering is important for high doping, while at low doping it is primarily
due to a decrease in the phonon thermal conductivity
Phase ordering and roughening on growing films
We study the interplay between surface roughening and phase separation during
the growth of binary films. Already in 1+1 dimension, we find a variety of
different scaling behaviors depending on how the two phenomena are coupled. In
the most interesting case, related to the advection of a passive scalar in a
velocity field, nontrivial scaling exponents are obtained in simulations.Comment: 4 pages latex, 6 figure
On the isomorphism problem of concept algebras
Weakly dicomplemented lattices are bounded lattices equipped with two unary
operations to encode a negation on {\it concepts}. They have been introduced to
capture the equational theory of concept algebras \cite{Wi00}. They generalize
Boolean algebras. Concept algebras are concept lattices, thus complete
lattices, with a weak negation and a weak opposition. A special case of the
representation problem for weakly dicomplemented lattices, posed in
\cite{Kw04}, is whether complete {\wdl}s are isomorphic to concept algebras. In
this contribution we give a negative answer to this question (Theorem
\ref{T:main}). We also provide a new proof of a well known result due to M.H.
Stone \cite{St36}, saying that {\em each Boolean algebra is a field of sets}
(Corollary \ref{C:Stone}). Before these, we prove that the boundedness
condition on the initial definition of {\wdl}s (Definition \ref{D:wdl}) is
superfluous (Theorem \ref{T:wcl}, see also \cite{Kw09}).Comment: 15 page
Epitaxial growth in dislocation-free strained alloy films: Morphological and compositional instabilities
The mechanisms of stability or instability in the strained alloy film growth
are of intense current interest to both theorists and experimentalists. We
consider dislocation-free, coherent, growing alloy films which could exhibit a
morphological instability without nucleation. We investigate such strained
films by developing a nonequilibrium, continuum model and by performing a
linear stability analysis. The couplings of film-substrate misfit strain,
compositional stress, deposition rate, and growth temperature determine the
stability of film morphology as well as the surface spinodal decomposition. We
consider some realistic factors of epitaxial growth, in particular the
composition dependence of elastic moduli and the coupling between top surface
and underlying bulk of the film. The interplay of these factors leads to new
stability results. In addition to the stability diagrams both above and below
the coherent spinodal temperature, we also calculate the kinetic critical
thickness for the onset of instability as well as its scaling behavior with
respect to misfit strain and deposition rate. We apply our results to some real
growth systems and discuss the implications related to some recent experimental

Morphological Doubling theory to two Bantu Languages Reduplication: A comparative perspective of Kinyarwanda and Swahili
Reduplication is a morphological phenomenon which has attracted attention of many researchers in various fields of Linguistics using a number of theories for many languages of the globe. Among other African languages, Kinyarwanda and Swahili have been studied under various approaches each but few comparative studies were conducted on these two Bantu languages spoken in Rwanda and its neighbouring countries of East African region. The aim of this study is to have a look into reduplication- a word formation process, with specific focus on Kinyarwanda and Swahili. Basing on Morphology Doubling Theory (MDT), the researchers examined the similarities and differences between the two languages. Both bounded and unbounded reduplication- full and partial word levels were concerned. Descriptive analysis revealed that the two members of the same set inherently share reduplication features basically complete root, partial and/or syllabic repetition in word formation process
Stress-driven instability in growing multilayer films
We investigate the stress-driven morphological instability of epitaxially
growing multilayer films, which are coherent and dislocation-free. We construct
a direct elastic analysis, from which we determine the elastic state of the
system recursively in terms of that of the old states of the buried layers. In
turn, we use the result for the elastic state to derive the morphological
evolution equation of surface profile to first order of perturbations, with the
solution explicitly expressed by the growth conditions and material parameters
of all the deposited layers. We apply these results to two kinds of multilayer
structures. One is the alternating tensile/compressive multilayer structure,
for which we determine the effective stability properties, including the effect
of varying surface mobility in different layers, its interplay with the global
misfit of the multilayer film, and the influence of asymmetric structure of
compressive and tensile layers on the system stability. The nature of the
asymmetry properties found in stability diagrams is in agreement with
experimental observations. The other multilayer structure that we study is one
composed of stacked strained/spacer layers. We also calculate the kinetic
critical thickness for the onset of morphological instability and obtain its
reduction and saturation as number of deposited layers increases, which is
consistent with recent experimental results. Compared to the single-layer film
growth, the behavior of kinetic critical thickness shows deviations for upper

On the homomorphism order of labeled posets
Partially ordered sets labeled with k labels (k-posets) and their
homomorphisms are examined. We give a representation of directed graphs by
k-posets; this provides a new proof of the universality of the homomorphism
order of k-posets. This universal order is a distributive lattice. We
investigate some other properties, namely the infinite distributivity, the
computation of infinite suprema and infima, and the complexity of certain
decision problems involving the homomorphism order of k-posets. Sublattices are

Gene activation precedes DNA demethylation in response to infection in human dendritic cells
DNA methylation is considered to be a relatively stable epigenetic mark. However, a growing body of evidence indicates that DNA methylation levels can change rapidly; for example, in innate immune cells facing an infectious agent. Nevertheless, the causal relationship between changes in DNA methylation and gene expression during infection remains to be elucidated. Here, we generated time-course data on DNA methylation, gene expression, and chromatin accessibility patterns during infection of human dendritic cells with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We found that the immune response to infection is accompanied by active demethylation of thousands of CpG sites overlapping distal enhancer elements. However, virtually all changes in gene expression in response to infection occur before detectable changes in DNA methylation, indicating that the observed losses in methylation are a downstream consequence of transcriptional activation. Footprinting analysis revealed that immune-related transcription factors (TFs), such as NF-ÎşB/Rel, are recruited to enhancer elements before the observed losses in methylation, suggesting that DNA demethylation is mediated by TF binding to cis-acting elements. Collectively, our results show that DNA demethylation plays a limited role to the establishment of the core regulatory program engaged upon infection
