    Cardiovascular Changes Induced by Acute Emotional Stress Estimated from the Pulse Transit Time Difference

    In the present work, the difference between arrival times of photoplethysmographic (PPG) pulses from two different sites of the arterial tree (PTTD) is calculated. As the PTTD is considered to be related with arterial pulse wave velocity, an evaluation of it''s usefulness to identify states of acute mental stress is performed. A subset of fourteen healthy volunteers undergoing a stress protocol was analysed and a statistical test was carried out to evaluate the validity of the proposed method. The results showed that the standard deviation of the PTTD had sufficient statistical capacity to discern between states of stress and relaxation. Furthermore, a generalised descending trend of the mean PTTD can be seen from relaxation to stress

    Heart Rate Variability Monitoring Using a Wearable Armband

    A wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor is evaluated as heart rate variability (HRV) monitor. The device consists of an armband designed to be worn on the left upper arm which provides 3 ECG channels based on 3 pairs of dry (no hydrogel) electrodes. Armband-ECG and conventional-Holter-ECG signals were simultaneously recorded from 14 subjects during 5 minutes in supine position. Spacial principal component analysis was used to obtain a unique armband ECG signal in which the electromyogram contribution is attenuated. QRS complexes were automatically detected. Five traditional HRV parameters were derived: SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50, and powers within low frequency (LF, [0.04, 0.15] Hz) and high frequency (HF, [0.15, 0.4] Hz) bands. The Pearson''s correlation coefficient between the measurements from the armband device and the measures from the Holter device was computed. Results show very high correlations (1.0000, 0.9999, 0.9984, 1.0000, and 0.9999 for SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50, and powers at LF and HF, respectively), suggesting that the quality of armband-ECG signals is enough to estimate HRV parameters during stationary movement restricted conditions

    In any higher education degree, the internship subject is designed to provide stu-dents the opportunity to work as a company labourer, but is not considered an em-ployee, however, he/she must respect the rules of his/her host institution, and to get more hands-on work experience. In engineering courses, an internship is an on-job training similar to an apprenticeship, more often taken up by students during one semester, usually the last of the course, to supplement their formal education and expose them to the professional world. Therefore, the relationship between educa-tional institutions and public or private companies is considered as strategic to be possible to train students with practical skills, but also with some theoretical knowledge. In addition, the internships are also a form of interaction that students can use to guide them through the transition to a career. The goal of this study is to present a new kind of higher education program in Portugal, the Higher Technical Professional Course (CTeSP), but also to explore the perception and challenges faced by students in undertaking an internship in one of these courses.N/

    The growth of wind power as an electric energy source is profitable from an environmental point of view and improves the energetic independence of countries with little fossil fuel resources. However, the wind resource randomness poses a great challenge in the management of electric grids. This study raises the possibility of using hydrogen as a mean to damp the variability of the wind resource. Thus, it is proposed the use of all the energy produced by a typical wind farm for hydrogen generation, that will in turn be used after for suitable generation of electric energy according to the operation rules in a liberalized electric market

    The fibrous fraction of the feeds encompasses a group of heterogeneous compounds differing in chemical composition and physical properties (Graham and Aman, 1991, Bach Knudsen, 2001). Dietary fiber is the most used term to define the fiber fraction of ingredients and feeds, and includes cell walls, stored non-starch polysaccharides (NSP), and lignin (Bach Knudsen, 2001). Based on their physico-chemical properties, DF can be divided into soluble and insoluble fractions with distinct effects on digestive physiology and animal metabolism. Consequently, the benefits of fiber inclusion in poultry diets will vary depending on factors such as characteristics of the fiber source, type of bird, and digestive health status

    Toxoplasma gondii in Spanish commercial dry-cured meat products

    Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii, the transmission of which has usually been attributed to ingestion of undercooked or raw meat. Epidemiological studies also mention cured meat products as a potential risk factor for acquiring toxoplasmosis. With the aim of contributing to the risk assessment process, 552 samples of commercial dry-cured hams/shoulders and dry-cured sausages of different trademarks from different localities in Spain were randomly purchased for analysis. These were, specifically, 311 dry-cured hams/shoulders and 241 dry-cured sausages (76 samples of chorizo, 75 samples of fuet/longaniza, and 90 samples of salchichón). Additionally, data featured on labels of each meat product were gathered with the purpose of studying the influence of curing time and salt content, among other parameters, on the viability of Toxoplasma. Real-time polymerase chain reaction technique (qPCR) was performed to detect T. gondii DNA in the samples, and infectivity was determined by mouse bioassay of positive qPCR samples. The presence of T. gondii was detected in 57 samples (10.3%), with a parasite load between 28.05 and 35.66 Ct. Bioassay test showed that 47 out of the 57 meat products in which the parasite has been detected produced mice seropositive response (IFA), which represents 8.5 of the total number of samples analyzed. Of those samples, DNA of Toxoplasma gondii in mice brain was detected in 6 meat products, indicating its viability (1.1%). Ct values obtained by qPCR in the brains of seropositive mice ranged from 33.10 to 36.04. According to product type, the parasite was viable in 3 dry-cured ham/shoulder samples and in 3 salchichón samples. Statistical analysis showed that none of the variables under consideration detailed on the meat product labels had a significant influence on the viability of the parasite. In conclusion, we found a low prevalence of the infective forms of Toxoplasma gondii in cured meat products, although the risk for consumers cannot be completely excluded. However, scientific monitoring of commercial meat products continues to be necessary in order to provide data for risk assessment of Toxoplasma gondii through the meat industry's Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP-based self-control system). In order to ensure that consumers can make a safe choice among these ready-to-eat products, it is important for food labels to include information on those parameters which are relevant for the survival of the parasite, such as curing times, or freezing treatment of meat used as an ingredient
