    Generalized Phase Synchronization in unidirectionally coupled chaotic oscillators

    We investigate phase synchronization between two identical or detuned response oscillators coupled to a slightly different drive oscillator. Our result is that phase synchronization can occur between response oscillators when they are driven by correlated (but not identical) inputs from the drive oscillator. We call this phenomenon Generalized Phase Synchronization (GPS) and clarify its characteristics using Lyapunov exponents and phase difference plots.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Hemorrhage from a jejunal polypoid hemangioma: single incisional laparoscopic approach

    Bleeding lesions in the small bowel are a much more significant challenge in terms of detection and treatment than those of the stomach or the large bowel, and require extensive gastrointestinal evaluation before a diagnosis can be made. The authors report the case of an 81-year-old female patient who underwent small bowel segmental resection by single incisional laparoscopic approach for distal jejunalhemangioma, which caused severe anemia. An abdominal computed tomography scan demonstrated a highly enhancing polypoid tumor in the distal ileum. During the single incisional laparoscopic exploration using a 2 cm sized skin incision, jejuno-jejunal intussusceptions and a jejunal tumor were noted. Single incisional laparoscopy was performed to assist the jejunal segmental resection. Pathologic reports confirmed the lesion to be a jejunalhemangioma. The authors report an unusual case of jejunalhemangioma caused by intussusception and gastrointestinal hemorrhage, which was treated by single incisional laparoscopic surgery

    Oxidative stress, defined as an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the antioxidant defense system, contributes to the pathogenesis of many heart diseases. Therefore, oxidative stress has been highlighted as a therapeutic target for heart disease treatment. Butein, a tetrahydroxychalcone, has potential biological activities, especially antioxidant properties. However, the effect of butein on oxidative-stressed heart cells has been poorly studied. Thus, we sought to identify the antioxidant effects of butein in H9c2 cardiomyoblasts. To elucidate these antioxidant effects, various concentrations of butein were used to pretreat H9c2 cells prior to H2O2 treatment. Thereafter, measures of oxidative damages, such as ROS production, antioxidant expression levels, and apoptosis, were evaluated. Butein effectively increased cell viability and rescued the cells from oxidative damage through the inhibition of ROS production, apoptosis, and increased antioxidant expression. Furthermore, butein dramatically inhibited mitochondrial dysfunction and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, which are the main ROS inducers. Nrf2 protein translocated from the cytosol to the nucleus and consequently activated its target genes as oxidative stress suppressors. These findings demonstrate that butein has potential antioxidant effects in H9c2 cardiomyoblasts, suggesting that it could be used as a therapeutic substance for the treatment of cardiac diseases

    Hexane Extract of Chloranthus japonicus Increases Adipocyte Differentiation by Acting on Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling Pathway

    Chloranthus japonicus has been heavily investigated for the treatment of various diseases. This paper attempts to show that Chloranthus japonicus can modulate adipocyte differentiation of preadipocytes. To establish this, we investigated the effects of Chloranthus japonicus extract in peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) expression, adipogenesis, and the underlying molecular mechanisms in C3H10T1/2 and 3T3-L1 cells. Our data showed that Chloranthus japonicus methanol extract increased lipid accumulation and promoted adipocyte differentiation. Further studies on the fractionation with various solvents led to the identification of Chloranthus japonicus hexane extract (CJHE) as the most potent inducer of adipocyte differentiation. CJHE consistently increased lipid accumulation and adipocyte marker expression including Pparγ and it acted during the early stages of adipocyte differentiation. Mechanistic studies revealed that CJHE and a Wnt inhibitor similarly stimulated adipogenesis and were active in Wnt-selective reporter assays. The effects of CJHE were inhibited by Wnt3a protein treatment and were significantly blunted in β-catenin-silenced cells, further suggesting that CJHE acted on Wnt pathways to promote adipogenesis. We also showed that Chloranthus japonicus extracts generated from different plant parts similarly promoted adipocyte differentiation. These results identified Chloranthus japonicus as a pro-adipogenic natural product and suggest its potential use in metabolic syndrome

    Design and Fabrication of 77GHz HEMT Mixer Modules using Experimentally Optimized Antipodal Finline Transitions

    77GHz PHEMT gate mixer module and resistive mixer module were fabricated for automotive applications using LG-CIT low noise PHEMT process and WR12-to-microstrip antipodal finline transitions. Experimental optimization of the finline transitions was attempted for wideband operation and low insertion loss by adjusting geometrical design parameters. The average insertion loss was measured o be 0.74dB per transition in 75~90GHz. Thefabricated gate mixer module and the resistive mixer module showed very good conversion loss of 2dB and 10.3dB, respectively, including finline transition loss and IF cable loss, which were very competitive performances

    Evaluation of Cerebral White Matter in Prelingually Deaf Children Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging

    This study compared white matter development in prelingually deaf and normal-hearing children using a tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) method. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was performed in 21 prelingually deaf (DEAF group) and 20 normal-hearing (HEAR group) subjects aged from 1.7 to 7.7 years. Using TBSS, we evaluated the regions of significant difference in fractional anisotropy (FA) between the groups. Correlations between FA values and age in each group were also analyzed using voxel-wise correlation analyses on the TBSS skeleton. Lower FA values of the white matter tract of Heschl’s gyrus, the inferior frontooccipital fasciculus, the uncinate fasciculus, the superior longitudinal fasciculus, and the forceps major were evident in the DEAF group compared with those in the HEAR group below 4 years of age, while the difference was not significant in older subjects. We also found that age-related development of the white matter tracts may continue until 8 years of age in deaf children. These results imply that development of the cerebral white matter tracts is delayed in prelingually deaf children

    Point-Graph Neural Network Based Novel Visual Positioning System for Indoor Navigation

    Indoor localization is a basic element in location-based services (LBSs), including seamless indoor and outdoor navigation, location-based precision marketing, spatial recognition in robotics, augmented reality, and mixed reality. The popularity of LBSs in the augmented reality and mixed reality fields has increased the demand for a stable and efficient indoor positioning method. However, the problem of indoor visual localization has not been appropriately addressed, owing to the strict trade-off between accuracy and cost. Therefore, we use point cloud and RGB characteristic information for the accurate acquisition of three-dimensional indoor space. The proposed method is a novel visual positioning system (VPS) capable of determining the user’s position by matching the pose information of the object estimated by the improved point-graph neural network (GNN) with the pose information label of a voxel database object addressed in predefined voxel units. We evaluated the performance of the proposed system considering a stationary object in indoor space. The results verify that high positioning accuracy and direction estimation can be efficiently achieved. Thus, spatial information of indoor space estimated using the proposed novel VPS can aid in indoor navigation
