    Upper Eyelid Retraction After Periorbital Trauma

    We report four unusual cases of upper eyelid retraction following periorbital trauma. Four previously healthy patients were evaluated for unilateral upper eyelid retraction following periorbital trauma. A 31-year-old man (Case 1) and a 24-year-old man (Case 2) presented with left upper eyelid retraction which developed after blow-out fractures, a 44-year-old woman (Case 3) presented with left upper eyelid retraction secondary to a periorbital contusion that occurred one week prior, and a 56-year-old man (Case 4) presented with left upper eyelid retraction that developed 1 month after a lower canalicular laceration was sustained during a traffic accident. The authors performed a thyroid function test and orbital computed tomography (CT) in all cases. Thyroid function was normal in all patients, CT showed an adhesion of the superior rectus muscle and superior oblique muscle in the first case and diffuse thickening of the superior rectus muscle and levator complex in the third case. CT showed no specific findings in the second or fourth cases. Upper eyelid retraction due to superior complex adhesion can be considered one of the complications of periorbital trauma

    Eccrine Angiomatous Hamartoma Mimicking a Traumatic Hemorrhage

    Eccrine angiomatous hamartoma (EAH) is a rare benign disease that is characterized by an abnormal proliferation of eccrine glands and vascular elements. It is generally congenital, but it can appear before puberty. It usually presents as a single plaque or nodule, but multiple patch-like lesions are also possible. EAH is mostly asymptomatic, but it is sometimes associated with pain or hyperhidrosis. It generally does not require aggressive treatment, but the lesion can be excised due to pain, enlargement and cosmetic reasons. A 3-week-old Korean female presented with a hemorrhagic skin lesion on the right foot since birth. There was no specific birth history. The lesion first appeared on the third toe of the right foot and quickly spread to almost half of the right foot. Histopathology examination revealed acanthosis in the epidermis and a proliferation of eccrine ducts, glands and capillaries. The eccrine glands were immunohistochemically-positive for carcinoembryonic antigen

    Decursinol chloroacrylates useful as fungicides

    Natural products decursin and decursinol angelate were recently reported as benign fungicides for controlling rice blast. Inspired by the structural similarity of the cumarin compounds and gained hint from the skeletal motifs, we designed and prepared synthetic compounds to increase the natural product efficacy and evaluated their antifungal activities against various plant disease pathogens in vitro. Synthetically prepared compound 4 and 5 indeed suppressed the mycelial growth of B. cinerea, F. oxysporum, P. italicum, and R. quercus-mongolicae. Additionally, compound 5 effectively prevents the growth of C. coccodes and C. parasitica. Furthermore, both 4 and 5 possess better inhibitory activities on spore germination of F. oxysporum and M. oryzae than the natural product decursin and commercial pesticide Iprodione. These results suggest that the effect of the lead compound for plant disease protection can be improved by tuning the structure of the original natural product and decursinol chloroacrylates 4 and 5 are candidates for the control of F. oxysporum and M. oryzae.This work was supported by Research Resettlement Fund for the new faculty of Seoul National University (to Y.     Monitoring the growth status variability in Onion (Allium cepa) and Garlic (Allium sativum) with RGB and multi-spectral UAV remote sensing imagery

    Traditional ways of monitoring the growth status of crops in the early and middle seasons rely on manual methods involving sampling and laboratory analysis, which are time-consuming and costly. In addition, a diagnostic method based on human eyes has a limitation in identifying invisible symptoms of crops with internal defects. Since UAV remote sensing allows fast and detailed mapping of crop growth due to the ability to obtain high-resolution images flying at low altitudes, an UAV platform is appropriate for collecting the images of onion and garlic vegetables with relatively small leaf areas in the early season. In this study, an experimental plot was prepared growing garlics and onions based on different planting timings and fertilizer rates, and the RGB and Multi-spectral UAV images of the onions and garlics on a spatial resolution of < 1 cm were collected to build relationships between the UAV images and various biophysical parameters of garlic and onion. Two spectral indices, i.e., vegetation fraction and 3D-based height estimation, obtained with a RGB camera were used to estimate the fresh weights of garlic and onion, and the nutritional status of the crops was studied based on NDVIs calculated using multi-spectral imagery obtained with a multi-spectral camera in order to investigate the potential for variable-rate fertilizer application. Image pre-processing techniques and crop segmentation methods for effectively extracting the images of garlic and onion were developed. The multi-linear regression models to estimate the average fresh weights of onions and garlics built based on RGB images showed the coefficients of determination>0.9 and >0.7 for onion and garlic, respectively. However, there was little effect of fertilizer application rates on the NDVIs in the early stage

    Involvement of mTOR signaling in sphingosylphosphorylcholine-induced hypopigmentation effects

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Sphingosylphosphorylcholine (SPC) acts as a potent lipid mediator and signaling molecule in various cell types. In the present study, we investigated the effects of SPC on melanogenesis and SPC-modulated signaling pathways related to melanin synthesis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Melanin production was measured in Mel-Ab cells. A luciferase assay was used to detect transcriptional activity of the MITF promoter. Western blot analysis was performed to examine SPC-induced signaling pathways.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>SPC produced significant hypopigmentation effects in a dose-dependent manner. It was found that SPC induced not only activation of Akt but also stimulation of mTOR, a downstream mediator of the Akt signaling pathway. Moreover, SPC decreased the levels of LC3 II, which is known to be regulated by mTOR. Treatment with the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin eliminated decreases in melanin and LC3 II levels by SPC. Furthermore, we found that the Akt inhibitor LY294002 restored SPC-mediated downregulation of LC3 II and inhibited the activation of mTOR by SPC.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data suggest that the mTOR signaling pathway is involved in SPC-modulated melanin synthesis.</p

    Complete Binocular Blindness as the First Manifestation of HIV-Related Cryptococcal Meningitis

    Ocular complications of HIV-related cryptococcal meningitis are reasonably common, but complete binocular blindness as the first manifestation of HIV is extremely rare. A 58-year-old man presented with binocular blindness. He experienced blurred vision for 3 days before the blindness. Mild pleocytosis was present in the cerebrospinal fluid, from which Cryptococcus neoformans was cultured. Serology revealed positivity for HIV antibody. He was treated with antifungal and antiretroviral therapy. This case indicates that HIV-related cryptococcal meningitis should be taken into consideration when determining the cause of unexpected sudden binocular blindness

    Analysis of clinical and genomic profiles of therapy-related myeloid neoplasm in Korea

    Background Therapy-related myeloid neoplasm (T-MN) rarely occurs among cancer survivors, and wascharacterized by poor prognosis. T-MN has germline predisposition in a considerable proportion. Here, clinical characteristics and germline/somatic variant profiles in T-MN patients were investigated, and the findings were compared with those of previous studies. Methods A review of medical records, cytogenetic study, targeted sequencing by next-generation sequencing, and survival analysis were performed on 53 patients with T-MN at a single institution in Korea. Results The patients were relatively younger compared to T-MN patients in other studies. Our T-MN patients showed ahigh frequency of complex karyotypes, −5/del(5q), and −7/del(7q), which was similar to the Japanese study group but higher than the Australian study group. The most common primary disease was non-Hodgkin lymphoma, followed by breast cancer. The detailed distributions of primary diseases were different across study groups. Seven patients (13.2%) harbored deleterious presumed/potential germline variants in cancer predisposition genes (CPG) such as BRIP1, CEBPA, DDX41, FANCM, NBN, NF1, and RUNX1. In the somatic variant profile, TP53 was the most frequently mutated gene, which was consistent with the previous studies about T-MN. However, the somatic variant frequency in our study group was lower than in other studies. Adverse factors for overall survival were male sex, older age, history of previous radiotherapy, previous longer cytotoxic therapy, and −5/del(5q). Conclusion The findings of our study corroborate important information about T-MN patients. As well as a considerable predisposition to CPG, the clinical characteristics and somatic variant profile showed distinctive patterns. Germline variant testing should be recommended for T-MN patients. If the T-MN patients harbor pathogenic germline variants, the family members for stem cell donation should be screened for carrier status through germline variant testing to avoid donor-derived myeloid neoplasm.
