Evaluation and control of mechanical degradation of austenitic stainless 310S steel substrate during coated superconductor processing

    Get PDF
The superconductor industry considers cold-rolled austenitic stainless 310S steel a less expensive substitute for Hastelloy X as a substrate for coated superconductor. However, the mechanical properties of cold-rolled 310S substrate degrade significantly in the superconductor deposition process. To overcome this, we applied hot rolling at 900 A degrees C (or 1000 A degrees C) to the 310S substrate. To check the property changes, a simulated annealing condition equivalent to that used in manufacturing was determined and applied. The effects of the hot rolling on the substrate were evaluated by analyzing its physical properties and texture.Web of Science24345444

Evaluation of tensile properties using instrumented indentation technique for small scale testing

The Instrumented indentation technique (IIT) is a useful tool for estimating various mechanical properties such as tensile properties, fracture toughness, and residual stress by analyzing the load and depth curve. Unlike conventional test such as tensile test, CTOD, since IIT makes an indent with rigid indenter and measures load and depth continuously, it requires only a localized area and small area on the target material. IIT also has merits of simple specimen preparation and experimental procedure in terms of time and cost. Also, it can be applied to in-field structures nondestructively. In this study, we introduce a method for evaluating tensile properties, primary yield strength and tensile strength using representative stress-strain beneath the rigid spherical indenter through numerous investigations of instrumented indentation curves. Analytic models and procedures for estimating the mechanical characterization of materials using IIT are proposed. The representative stress-strain method directly correlates indentation stress and strain beneath indenter to true stress and strain of the tensile test by taking into account the plastic constraint effect. The experimental results from IIT were verified by comparing results from the uniaxial tensile test. In particular, the applications of IIT in small scale and localized area of materials are presented. Reference 1) D. Tabor: Hardness of metal, (first ed. Clarendon Press, New York, 1951) 2) W.C. Ultrafast Electron Microscopy Integrated with a Direct Electron Detection Camera

In the past decade, we have witnessed the rapid growth of the field of ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM), which provides intuitive means to watch atomic and molecular motions of matter. Yet, because of the limited current of the pulsed electron beam resulting from space-charge effects, observations have been mainly made to periodic motions of the crystalline structure of hundreds of nanometers or higher by stroboscopic imaging at high repetition rates. Here, we develop an advanced UEM with robust capabilities for circumventing the present limitations by integrating a direct electron detection camera for the first time which allows for imaging at low repetition rates. This approach is expected to promote UEM to a more powerful platform to visualize molecular and collective motions and dissect fundamental physical, chemical, and materials phenomena in space and time.ope

A novel method to identify high order gene-gene interactions in genome-wide association studies: Gene-based MDR

Abstract

Background

Because common complex diseases are affected by multiple genes and environmental factors, it is essential to investigate gene-gene and/or gene-environment interactions to understand genetic architecture of complex diseases. After the great success of large scale genome-wide association (GWA) studies using the high density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chips, the study of gene-gene interaction becomes a next challenge. Multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) analysis has been widely used for the gene-gene interaction analysis. In practice, however, it is not easy to perform high order gene-gene interaction analyses via MDR in genome-wide level because it requires exploring a huge search space and suffers from a computational burden due to high dimensionality.

Results

We propose dimensional reduction analysis, Gene-MDR analysis for the fast and efficient high order gene-gene interaction analysis. The proposed Gene-MDR method is composed of two-step applications of MDR: within- and between-gene MDR analyses. First, within-gene MDR analysis summarizes each gene effect via MDR analysis by combining multiple SNPs from the same gene. Second, between-gene MDR analysis then performs interaction analysis using the summarized gene effects from within-gene MDR analysis. We apply the Gene-MDR method to bipolar disorder (BD) GWA data from Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium (WTCCC). The results demonstrate that Gene-MDR is capable of detecting high order gene-gene interactions associated with BD.

Conclusion

By reducing the dimension of genome-wide data from SNP level to gene level, Gene-MDR efficiently identifies high order gene-gene interactions. Therefore, Gene-MDR can provide the key to understand complex disease etiology.</p

Evaluation of Cell Toxicity and Surface Properties of Surface Modified Ti and Ti Alloys

This study was performed to investigate the surface properties and cell toxicity of the anodized and hydrothermally treated Ti, Ti-6Al-4V alloy and Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy. Bioactivity was evaluated from the surface activation layers formed on the surface of specimens in simulated body fluid (SBF) for a period of 30 days. Cell toxicity was evaluated based on the optical density of the survival cell. The porous oxide films were formed on all of the specimens by anodic oxidation. The oxide films of Ti were composed of strong anatase peaks without rutile peaks, Ti-6Al-4V alloy was composed of weak anatase peaks and weak rutile peaks and Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy was composed of strong anatase peaks and weak rutile peaks. The oxide films of all of the specimens exhibited an increase in the intensity of anatase peaks after hydrothermal treatment. The surface activation layers were formed only on the oxide films of Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy, also this alloy presented a significantly higher optical density than Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy on the MTT assay for cell toxicity evaluation

A delay-product-type Lyapunov functional approach for enhanced synchronization of chaotic Lur'e systems using a quantized controller

    Get PDF
The asymptotic synchronization problem of chaotic Lur'e systems in the master-slave framework was explored in this paper. A time-varying delay feedback controller with quantization considerations and a delay-product-type Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional technique were employed to tackle this problem. Consider an error system based on master and slave systems, for which sufficient asymptotic stability requirements are developed to assure that the addressed system achieves proper synchronization. Following that, the desired control gain was determined by finding a feasible solution to these stability requirements. The results of this paper were validated using a numerical example with simulations, which revealed that they were superior to previously published ones

We performed a cross-sectional study to estimate the seroprevalence of Fasciola hepatica in herds of cattle on Ulleung island, Korea. Blood samples were collected from randomly selected cattle and the sera were separated and analysed with an ELISA to detect antibodies against F. hepatica. The positive samples were classified as mildly, moderately or strongly positive. Out of 405 cattle sera assessed, 38 (9.4%) were seropositive for antibodies against F. hepatica. From these, 2.5% each were moderately or strongly positive and 4.4% were mildly positive. A significantly higher seroprevalence (P<0.05) was observed in young animals (<2 y old, 15.3%) compared to adults (≥2 y old, 5.4%), while no significant difference in seropositivity was found between male and female animals. This is the the first report of F. hepatica seroprevalence in cattle herds in Korea. These findings may be used to establish a base-line of information for future investigations focused on the significance of F. hepatica in Korea.
