The Radon Monitoring System in Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment
We developed a highly sensitive, reliable and portable automatic system
(H) to monitor the radon concentration of the underground experimental
halls of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. H is able to measure
radon concentration with a statistical error less than 10\% in a 1-hour
measurement of dehumidified air (R.H. 5\% at 25C) with radon
concentration as low as 50 Bq/m. This is achieved by using a large radon
progeny collection chamber, semiconductor -particle detector with high
energy resolution, improved electronics and software. The integrated radon
monitoring system is highly customizable to operate in different run modes at
scheduled times and can be controlled remotely to sample radon in ambient air
or in water from the water pools where the antineutrino detectors are being
housed. The radon monitoring system has been running in the three experimental
halls of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment since November 2013
Development of a GIS Based Water Management Tool for a Large Scale Rice Irrigation Scheme
A GIS based model was developed to integrate the vast amounts of spatially distributed information from the Kerian Irrigation Scheme comprising eight
compartments which are further subdivided into 28 blocks. The model consists of three modules. The "Scheduling" program computes irrigation deliveries
based on spatial and temporal demand of the paddy field by each compartment, block or secondary canal. The "Monitoring" program gives information by
compartment and by block on the uniformity of water distribution and the shortfall or excess. Relative Water Supply (RWS), Water Use Efficiency (WUE),
Cumulative Relative Water Supply (CRWS), and Water Productivity Index (WPI) were computed by the "Evaluation" module. The post-season analysis uses weekly information on hydro-climatic parameters, irrigation delivery and
irrigation indices by block within each compartment. On a weekly basis, RWS and WUE were found to range from 1.01 to 2.24 and 45% to 99% respectively in the main season and 1.01 to 1.87 and 53.57% to 96.15% respectively in the
off season. The average values of RWS and WUE were found to be 1.53 and 68.15% in the main season and 1.33 and 78.47% in the off season respectively.
The average values of WPI were also found to be 0.13 and 0.22 kg/m3 in the main season and off seasons respectively. Color-eoded thematic maps were
produced for the monitoring of Seasonal Yields and Cropping Intensity (CI) by block and compartment of the scheme. The results are displayed allowing the
manager to view maps, tables and graphs in a comprehensible form to ease decision making as the season progresses. This study would be useful to
improve the irrigation system management based on feedback of field
information
The Submillimeter Array
The Submillimeter Array (SMA), a collaborative project of the Smithsonian
Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) and the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy
and Astrophysics (ASIAA), has begun operation on Mauna Kea in Hawaii. A total
of eight 6-m telescopes comprise the array, which will cover the frequency
range of 180-900 GHz. All eight telescopes have been deployed and are
operational. First scientific results utilizing the three receiver bands at
230, 345, and 690 GHz have been obtained and are presented in the accompanying

Cancer event rate and mortality with thienopyridines: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Introduction
Thienopyridines are a class of antiplatelet drugs widely used in cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment. A recent concern has come to light regarding the safety of thienopyridines because of the possible risk of malignancy. We therefore performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the association between thienopyridine exposure and malignancy.
Methods
We searched the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases in March 2016 for studies that evaluated incident cancer and cancer mortality with and without exposure to thienopyridines. Relevant studies were identified, and data were extracted and analysed using random-effects meta-analysis.
Results
A total of nine studies (six randomised controlled trials and three cohort studies) that included 282,084 participants were included. The cancer event rate with clopidogrel and prasugrel was 3.25% and 1.58% respectively. When compared with standard aspirin or placebo, thienopyridines are not significantly associated with cancer mortality and event rate (odds ratio [OR] 1.12, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.80–1.56, n = 3; and OR 0.92, 95% CI 0.52–1.64, n = 2, respectively. Further analyses examining clopidogrel showed no significant association with cancer event rate or malignancy-related death. When comparing prasugrel with clopidogrel, no significant association was noted for cancer event rate (OR 1.10, 95% CI 0.89–1.37, n = 2]. Subanalyses according to cancer location showed that thienopyridines are not significantly associated with malignancy mortality and/or incidence.
Conclusions
Our results suggest that there is currently insufficient evidence to suggest that thienopyridine exposure is associated with an increased risk of cancer event rate or mortality
A spectral line survey in the 2 mm and 1.3 mm windows toward the carbon rich envelope of IRC +10216
We present the results of our spectral line surveys in the 2 mm and 1.3 mm
windows toward the carbon rich envelope of IRC +10216. Totally 377 lines are
detected, among which 360 lines are assigned to 57 known molecules (including
29 rare isotopomers and 2 cyclic isomers). Only 17 weak lines remain
unidentified. Rotational lines of isotopomers 13CCH and HN13C are detected for
the first time in IRC +10216. The detection of the formaldehyde lines in this
star is also confirmed. Possible abundance difference among the three 13C
substituted isotopic isomers of HC3N is reported. Isotopic ratios of C and O
are confirmed to be non-solar while those of S and Si to be nearly solar.
Column densities have been estimated for 15 molecular species. Modified
spectroscopic parameters have been calculated for NaCN, Na13CN, KCN and SiC2.
Transition frequencies from the present observations were used to improve the

Mid Infrared Photometry of Mass-Losing AGB Stars
We present ground-based mid-infrared imaging for 27 M-, S- and C-type
Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. The data are compared with those of the
database available thanks to the IRAS, ISO, MSX and 2MASS catalogues. Our goal
is to establish relations between the IR colors, the effective temperature
, the luminosity and the mass loss rate , for improving
the effectiveness of AGB modelling. Bolometric (absolute) magnitudes are
obtained through distance compilations, and by applying previously-derived
bolometric corrections; the variability is also studied, using data accumulated
since the IRAS epoch. The main results are: i) Values of and for C
stars fit relations previously established by us, with Miras being on average
more evolved and mass losing than Semiregulars. ii) Moderate IR excesses (as
compared to evolutionary tracks) are found for S and M stars in our sample:
they are confirmed to originate from the dusty circumstellar environment. iii)
A larger reddening characterizes C-rich Miras and post-AGBs. In this case, part
of the excess is due to AGB models overestimating for C-stars, as a
consequence of the lack of suitable molecular opacities. This has a large
effect on the colors of C-rich sources and sometimes disentangling the
photospheric and circumstellar contributions is difficult; better model
atmospheres should be used in stellar evolutionary codes for C stars. iv) The
presence of a long-term variability at mid-IR wavelengths seems to be limited
to sources with maximum emission in the 8 -- 20 m region, usually Mira
variables (1/3 of our sample). Most Semiregular and post-AGB stars studied here

Vortex Dynamics and Defects in Simulated Flux Flow
We present the results of molecular dynamic simulations of a two-dimensional
vortex array driven by a uniform current through random pinning centers at zero
temperature. We identify two types of flow of the driven array near the
depinning threshold. For weak disorder the flux array contains few dislocation
and moves via correlated displacements of patches of vortices in a {\it
crinkle} motion. As the disorder strength increases, we observe a crossover to
a spatially inhomogeneous regime of {\it plastic} flow, with a very defective
vortex array and a channel-like structure of the flowing regions. The two
regimes are characterized by qualitatively different spatial distribution of
vortex velocities. In the crinkle regime the distribution of vortex velocities
near threshold has a single maximum that shifts to larger velocities as the
driving force is increased. In the plastic regime the distribution of vortex
velocities near threshold has a clear bimodal structure that persists upon
time-averaging the individual velocities. The bimodal structure of the velocity
distribution reflects the coexistence of pinned and flowing regions and is
proposed as a quantitative signature of plastic flow.Comment: 12 pages, 13 embedded PostScript figure
