A Research Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Masters in Business Administration at Strathmore UniversityStrategic Planning has generally been held by not-for-profit organizations as a key success factor for achieving short term and long term goals. These organizations generally consider themselves successful if they are able to attract funding to execute their mission. It is believed that not-for-profit organizations which are successful in terms of financial management outcomes achieve such success as a result of effective implementation of strategic plans. However, little information is available on the relationship between strategic planning and implementation and not-for-profit organizations’ management and financial outcomes. This study evaluated the extent to which strategic planning contributes to the success of management of not-for-profit organizations. Management success was measured in terms of staff knowledge and innovation capacity, operational efficiency, financial management efficiency, and income growth. The study involved five NPOs namely; African Medical and Research Foundation, Christian Health Association of Kenya, LVCT Health and Training, Kenya Red Cross Society, and Undugu Society of Kenya. Members of the respective Board of Directors and top management were interviewed while a survey questionnaire was administered to senior and middle level managers. Financial data including income, cash operating reserve, and current ratio were computed from the respective organization’s financial statements covering years 2005 to 2016. Content analysis was used to analyze the interview data while the survey data was analyzed using descriptive and regression statistical methods. Further, financial data was analyzed using time series analysis. The results showed compelling evidence indicating that strategic planning and implementation had significant positive impact in the operation and financial management of the study not-for-profit organizations and hence in their success. The study provides a strong foundation on effective management of strategic planning process and implementation. This study would also be useful to not-for-profit organizations’ management in the decision to invest in strategic planning process for better operational and financial outcomes of their organizations. In addition, creates new grounds for further work by scholars in the study of the relationship between strategic planning and financial management

Non-UK university students stress levels and their coping strategies

    No full text
Over the last twenty years, the number of non-UK students studying at higher education in UK universities has increased. Their presence in a different culture and different ways of teaching can create problems, and in particular, there is some evidence that overseas students experience stress while they are at the university.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

An Exploration of Home-Based Care Program as a Strategy to Manage Covid-19 Cases in Kenya

    No full text
The rapid spread of the Covid-19 infections across the globe has compelled the Kenyan government to ensure that the disease is not only managed, but also contained. The impact of the disease on health facilities is immense. One of the most common policy responses has been the integration of home-based care and treatment as a way of decongesting hospitals. The Kenyan government came up with this proposal at a time when the health facilities were outstretched. There exists scant literature on the issue of home-based care on Covid-19 patients, especially in the developing countries. This study therefore sought to not only assess the available models, components, practices and benefits of home-based care, especially in the management of Covid-19, but it also sought to identify possible challenges that could face this program and recommended solutions to these challenges

Introduction: According to statistical evidence, infertility is a global challenge which many people of all social, economic and cultural clasess are grappling with. One of the biggest issues revolves around the response ability towards this health problem. This paper therefore investigated the coping strategies used by women to address infertility in Kisumu County, Kenya.Materials and Methods: The study was guided by the coping theory propounded by Lazarus and Folkman. Data was collected from 200 respondents using semi-structured questionnaires. At the same time, six focus group discussions (FGDs) comprising of 10-12 individuals and from 36 key informant interviews (KIIs) were employed to collect qualitative data. Results: It was established that infertile couples addressed the problem of infertility in various ways including seeking solace in prayers, soliciting for social capital from friends, relatives and colleagues, and seeking alternative traditional herbal medicine. It was also established that the choice of coping strategies employed by couples was influenced by their social-economic backgrounds such as religious affiliation, level of education and place of residence. Few women sought medical intervention to address infertility because of the costs attached to the option. Conclusions: Infertility coping strategies for women in Kisumu County entail problem-focused and emotionally driven approaches.Recommendations:  The authors recommend incorporation of traditional and medical solutions in dealing with issues of infertility. More research on herbs and other traditional methods of addressing infertility are also recommended. Modern technology such as sperm banks and in- vitro fertilization should also be introduced in the most acceptable ways for adoption by choice

Does Informal Education Training Increase Awareness of Anaphylaxis among Students of Medicine? Before-After Survey Study

    No full text
Allergies are among the most common chronic diseases in Europe. The most serious complication is anaphylactic shock. Most cases occur outside the hospital; thus, knowledge of symptoms and first aid is crucial. This study aimed to evaluate the awareness of anaphylaxis and the ability to use adrenaline auto-injectors among medical students, and to determine an improvement after training based on non-formal education. The research was conducted among 364 medicine students (years 1–5) from the Medical University of Gdańsk, with year-specific curriculum-based general medical knowledge. Training consisted of pre-test, practical training and post-test. Descriptive statistics were used to reveal the characteristics of students from different grades. A Mann–Whitney U test was used for statistical analysis. The tested students did not have sufficient knowledge to provide first aid in cases of anaphylaxis before training. There was an increase in knowledge (on average, 28.6%, p = 0.005) after training. Almost all (99.4%) of the respondents believed that they would be able to use an adrenaline auto-injector in case of emergency after the training. The training based on non-formal education was effective. The use of the subject-performed task method helped students to remember the stages of action in stressful situations
