    Monte Carlo Simulation of Sinusoidally Modulated Superlattice Growth

    The fabrication of ZnSe/ZnTe superlattices grown by the process of rotating the substrate in the presence of an inhomogeneous flux distribution instead of successively closing and opening of source shutters is studied via Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that the concentration of each compound is sinusoidally modulated along the growth direction, caused by the uneven arrival of Se and Te atoms at a given point of the sample, and by the variation of the Te/Se ratio at that point due to the rotation of the substrate. In this way we obtain a ZnSe1−x_{1-x}Tex_x alloy in which the composition xx varies sinusoidally along the growth direction. The period of the modulation is directly controlled by the rate of the substrate rotation. The amplitude of the compositional modulation is monotonous for small angular velocities of the substrate rotation, but is itself modulated for large angular velocities. The average amplitude of the modulation pattern decreases as the angular velocity of substrate rotation increases and the measurement position approaches the center of rotation. The simulation results are in good agreement with previously published experimental measurements on superlattices fabricated in this manner

Most extracellular proteins are secreted via the classical endoplasmic reticulum (ER)/Golgi-dependent secretion pathway; however, some proteins, including a few danger-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), are secreted via non-classical ER/Golgi-independent secretion pathways. The evolutionarily conserved high mobility group box1 (HMGB1) is a ubiquitous nuclear protein that can be released by almost all cell types. HMGB1 lacks signal peptide and utilizes diverse non-canonical secretion mechanisms for its extracellular export. Although the post-translational modifications of HMGB1 were demonstrated, the oxidation of HMGB1 and secretion mechanisms are not highlighted yet. We currently investigated that peroxiredoxins I and II (PrxI/II) induce the intramolecular disulfide bond formation of HMGB1 in the nucleus. Disulfide HMGB1 is preferentially transported out of the nucleus by binding to the nuclear exportin chromosome-region maintenance 1 (CRM1). We determined the kinetics of HMGB1 oxidation in bone marrow-derived macrophage as early as a few minutes after lipopolysaccharide treatment, peaking at 4 h while disulfide HMGB1 accumulation was observed within the cells, starting to secrete in the late time point. We have shown that HMGB1 oxidation status, which is known to determine the biological activity in extracellular HMGB1, is crucial for the secretion of HMGB1 from the nucleus. This review summarizes selected aspects of HMGB1 redox biology relevant to the induction and propagation of inflammatory diseases.     Driven Diffusive Systems: How Steady States Depend on Dynamics

    In contrast to equilibrium systems, non-equilibrium steady states depend explicitly on the underlying dynamics. Using Monte Carlo simulations with Metropolis, Glauber and heat bath rates, we illustrate this expectation for an Ising lattice gas, driven far from equilibrium by an `electric' field. While heat bath and Glauber rates generate essentially identical data for structure factors and two-point correlations, Metropolis rates give noticeably weaker correlations, as if the `effective' temperature were higher in the latter case. We also measure energy histograms and define a simple ratio which is exactly known and closely related to the Boltzmann factor for the equilibrium case. For the driven system, the ratio probes a thermodynamic derivative which is found to be dependent on dynamics

    Atomic scale evolution of the surface chemistry in Li[Ni,Mn,Co]O2 cathode for Li-ion batteries stored in air

    Layered LiMO2 (M = Ni, Co, Mn, and Al mixture) cathode materials used for Li-ion batteries are reputed to be highly reactive through their surface, where the chemistry changes rapidly when exposed to ambient air. However, conventional electron/spectroscopy-based techniques or thermogravimetric analysis fails to capture the underlying atom-scale chemistry of vulnerable Li species. To study the evolution of the surface composition at the atomic scale, here we use atom probe tomography and probed the surface species formed during exposure of a LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) cathode material to air. The compositional analysis evidences the formation of Li2CO3. Site specific examination from a cracked region of an NMC811 particle also suggests the predominant presence of Li2CO3. These insights will help to design improved protocols for cathode synthesis and cell assembly, as well as critical knowledge for cathode degradatio

    Soft modes of collective domain-wall vibrations in epitaxial ferroelectric thin films

    Mechanical restoring forces acting on ferroelastic domain walls displaced from the equilibrium positions in epitaxial films are calculated for various modes of their cooperative translational oscillations. For vibrations of the domain-wall superlattice with the wave vectors corresponding to the center and boundaries of the first Brillouin zone, the soft modes are singled out that are distinguished by a minimum magnitude of the restoring force. It is shown that, in polydomain ferroelectric thin films, the soft modes of wall vibrations may create enormously large contribution to the film permittivity.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    Low - mid latitude D region ionospheric perturbations associated with 22 July 2009 total solar eclipse: wave -like signatures inferred from VLF observations

    We present first report on the periodic wave-like signatures (WLS) in the D region ionosphere during 22 July 2009 total solar eclipse using JJI, Japan, very low frequency (VLF) navigational transmitter signal (22.2 kHz) observations at stations, Allahabad, Varanasi and Nainital in Indian Sector, Busan in Korea, and Suva in Fiji. The signal amplitude increased on 22 July by about 6 and 7 dB at Allahabad and Varanasi and decreased by about 2.7, 3.5, and 0.5 dB at Nainital, Busan, and Suva, respectively, as compared to 24 July 2009 (normal day). The increase/decrease in the amplitude can be understood in terms of modal interference at the sites of modes converted at the discontinuity created by the eclipse intercepting the different transmitter-receiver great circle paths. The wavelet analysis shows the presence of WLS of period ~16–40 min at stations under total eclipse and of period ~30–80 min at stations under partial eclipse (~85–54% totality) with delay times between ~50 and 100 min at different stations. The intensity of WLS was maximum for paths in the partially eclipsed region and minimum in the fully eclipsed region. The features of WLS on eclipse day seem almost similar to WLS observed in the nighttime of normal days (e.g., 24 July 2009). The WLS could be generated by sudden cutoff of the photo-ionization creating nighttime like conditions in the D region ionosphere and solar eclipse induced gravity waves coming to ionosphere from below and above. The present observations shed additional light on the current understanding of gravity waves induced D region ionospheric perturbations
