Beam instrumentation for the Tevatron Collider
The Tevatron in Collider Run II (2001-present) is operating with six times
more bunches and many times higher beam intensities and luminosities than in
Run I (1992-1995). Beam diagnostics were crucial for the machine start-up and
the never-ending luminosity upgrade campaign. We present the overall picture of
the Tevatron diagnostics development for Run II, outline machine needs for new
instrumentation, present several notable examples that led to Tevatron
performance improvements, and discuss the lessons for future colliders
Effects of deep sedation or general anesthesia on cardiac function in mice undergoing cardiovascular magnetic resonance
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Genetically engineered mouse models of human cardiovascular disease provide an opportunity to understand critical pathophysiological mechanisms. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) provides precise reproducible assessment of cardiac structure and function, but, in contrast to echocardiography, requires that the animal be immobilized during image acquisition. General anesthetic regimens yield satisfactory images, but have the potential to significantly perturb cardiac function. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of general anesthesia and a new deep sedation regimen, respectively, on cardiac function in mice as determined by CMR, and to compare them to results obtained in mildly sedated conscious mice by echocardiography.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In 6 mildly sedated normal conscious mice assessed by echo, heart rate was 615 ± 25 min<sup>-1 </sup>(mean ± SE) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was 0.94 ± 0.01. In the CMR studies of normal mice, heart rate was slightly lower during deep sedation with morphine/midazolam (583 ± 30 min<sup>-1</sup>), but the difference was not statistically significant. General anesthesia with 1% inhaled isoflurane significantly depressed heart rate (468 ± 7 min<sup>-1</sup>, p < 0.05 vs. conscious sedation). In 6 additional mice with ischemic LV failure, trends in heart rate were similar, but not statistically significant. In normal mice, deep sedation depressed LVEF (0.79 ± 0.04, p < 0.05 compared to light sedation), but to a significantly lesser extent than general anesthesia (0.60 ± 0.04, p < 0.05 vs. deep sedation).</p> <p>In mice with ischemic LV failure, ejection fraction measurements were comparable when performed during light sedation, deep sedation, and general anesthesia, respectively. Contrast-to-noise ratios were similar during deep sedation and during general anesthesia, indicating comparable image quality. Left ventricular mass measurements made by CMR during deep sedation were nearly identical to those made during general anesthesia (r<sup>2 </sup>= 0.99, mean absolute difference < 4%), indicating equivalent quantitative accuracy obtained with the two methods. The imaging procedures were well-tolerated in all mice.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In mice with normal cardiac function, CMR during deep sedation causes significantly less depression of heart rate and ejection fraction than imaging during general anesthesia with isoflurane. In mice with heart failure, the sedation/anesthesia regimen had no clear impact on cardiac function. Deep sedation and general anesthesia produced CMR with comparable image quality and quantitative accuracy.</p
Beam Test Results of the BTeV Silicon Pixel Detector
The results of the BTeV silicon pixel detector beam test carried out at
Fermilab in 1999-2000 are reported. The pixel detector spatial resolution has
been studied as a function of track inclination, sensor bias, and readout

Beam Test of BTeV Pixel Detectors
The silicon pixel vertex detector is one of the key elements of the BTeV
spectrometer. Detector prototypes were tested in a beam at Fermilab. We report
here on the measured spatial resolution as a function of the incident angles
for different sensor-readout electronics combinations. We compare the results

Performance of prototype BTeV silicon pixel detectors in a high energy pion beam
The silicon pixel vertex detector is a key element of the BTeV spectrometer.
Sensors bump-bonded to prototype front-end devices were tested in a high energy
pion beam at Fermilab. The spatial resolution and occupancies as a function of
the pion incident angle were measured for various sensor-readout combinations.
The data are compared with predictions from our Monte Carlo simulation and very

Lung cancer, genetic predisposition and smoking : the Nordic Twin Study of Cancer
Background We aimed to disentangle genetic and environmental causes in lung cancer while considering smoking status. Methods Four Nordic twin cohorts (43 512 monozygotic (MZ) and 71 895 same sex dizygotic (DZ) twin individuals) had smoking data before cancer diagnosis. We used time-to-event analyses accounting for censoring and competing risk of death to estimate incidence, concordance risk and heritability of liability to develop lung cancer by smoking status. Results During a median of 28.5 years of follow-up, we recorded 1508 incident lung cancers. Of the 30 MZ and 28 DZ pairs concordant for lung cancer, nearly all were current smokers at baseline and only one concordant pair was seen among never smokers. Among ever smokers, the case-wise concordance of lung cancer, that is the risk before a certain age conditional on lung cancer in the co-twin before that age, was significantly increased compared with the cumulative incidence for both MZ and DZ pairs. This ratio, the relative recurrence risk, significantly decreased by age for MZ but was constant for DZ pairs. Heritability of lung cancer was 0.41 (95% CI 0.26 to 0.56) for currently smoking and 0.37 (95% CI 0.25 to 0.49) for ever smoking pairs. Among smoking discordant pairs, the pairwise HR for lung cancer of the ever smoker twin compared to the never smoker co-twin was 5.4 (95% CI 2.1 to 14.0) in MZ pairs and 5.0 (95% CI 3.2 to 7.9) in DZ pairs. Conclusions The contribution of familial effects appears to decrease by age. The discordant pair analysis confirms that smoking causes lung cancer.Peer reviewe
Observation of the Dynamic Beta Effect at CESR with CLEO
Using the silicon strip detector of the CLEO experiment operating at the
Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring (CESR), we have observed that the
horizontal size of the luminous region decreases in the presence of the
beam-beam interaction from what is expected without the beam-beam interaction.
The dependence on the bunch current agrees with the prediction of the dynamic

Social Factors and Health: Description of a new Norwegian twin study
A compelling literature substantiates that our social worlds have significant and far-reaching effects on
health and well-being throughout life. Yet, few studies of social factors and their effects on health have been
embedded within the twin design. Towards this end, we have initiated a new twin study on social factors and
health which will investigate the genetic and environmental influences on social environments, and explore
how social environments mediate these influences on physical and mental health. Herein, we describe the
study sample, response rates and measures. Twins born 1935-1960 were invited to complete a questionnaire
and these data were supplemented with information on cardiovascular disease and cancer through linkage to
national health registries. Among the 10655 twins who were contacted, responses were received from 5446
individuals (1989 pairs and 1468 single responders). The subsample of pairs where both twins responded includes
1004 identical (MZ) pairs and 985 fraternal (DZ) pairs. The overall individual and pairwise response
rates were 51% and 37%, respectively. The average age is 61.54 years, 56.1% of the responders are female
and 46.1% are identical twins. MZ twins were more likely to participate than DZ twins. Sex and age effects
were statistically significant for many of the psychosocial measures and for measures of support and strain
in the social network. There were no differences in the social networks between twins in pairs where both
twins responded and twins in pairs where only one twin responded
