Psychoanalysis and Social Policy: France, Germany and the United States.

Proposing a comparative history of the relationship between psychoanalysis and medical institutions in Germany, France and the United States, this paper reminds us of the obstacles encountered by the psychoanalytic movement and of the debates surrounding its introduction in each of the three countries. Once accepted as a legitimate approach to psychotherapy, psychoanalysis is faced with a new set of problems regarding its insertion within the range of medical practices, its institutionalization, its endorsement by social security administrations, and the definition of a standardized formative cursus. Local circumstances notwithstanding the question of the curriculum remains a hotly debated issue in all three countries with a particularly strong focus on the respective status of lay analysts and medically trained practitioners.Cet article porte sur l'histoire comparée des rapports entre la psychanalyse et les institutions médicales en Allemagne, en France et aux Etats-Unis et sur celle des obstacles rencontrés par la nouvelle discipline, au cours des débats qui entourent son implantation dans chacun de ces trois pays. Une fois sa respectabilité acquise, la psychanalyse rencontre de nouveaux problèmes liés à son insertion au sein des pratiques médicales, à son institutionnalisation hospitalière, à sa reconnaissance par les organismes de sécurité sociale, et à la mise en place de cursus de formation relativement homogènes. Au-delà de différences liées aux circonstances de la diffusion de la psychanalyse, et à la diversité des systèmes hospitaliers, un problème commun se pose partout : celui de la formation des psychanalystes et des statuts respectifs des analystes médecins et de ceux qui ne le sont pas
