    Discerning Oriental from European beech by leaf spectroscopy: Operational and physiological implications

    European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forests have recently experienced severe diebacks that are expected to increase in future. Oriental beech (Fagus sylvatica spp. orientalis (Lipsky) Greut. & Burd) is a potential candidate for assisted migration (AM) in European forests due to its greater genetic diversity and potentially higher drought resistance. Yet AM entails not only benefits, but also risks, and it is therefore important to monitor the progression of introduced (sub)species. Here, we demonstrate the potential of leaf spectroscopy to replace resourceintensive genetic analysis and field phenotyping for the discrimination and characterization of these two beech subspecies. We studied two European beech forests, one in France and one in Switzerland, where Oriental beech from the Greater Caucasus was introduced over 100 years ago. During two summers (2021, 2022), we measured leaf spectral reflectance, leaf morphological and biochemical traits from genotyped adult trees. Subspecies prediction models were developed separately for top-of-canopy leaves (amenable to remote sensing) and bottom-of-canopy leaves (easier to harvest) using partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and different sets of spectral predictors. Morphological, biochemical and spectra-derived leaf traits indicated that Oriental beech trees at the sites studied were characterized by higher lignin and nitrogen per unit leaf area than European beech, suggesting more protein-rich leaves on a per-area basis. The model based on top-of-canopy leaf reflectance spectra in the short-wave-infrared region (SWIR I: 1450–1750 nm) most accurately distinguished Oriental from European beech (BA = 0.86 ± 0.08, k = 0.72 ± 0.15), closely followed by models based on SWIR II, and on spectra-derived traits (BA ≥ 0.84, k ≥ 0.67). This study provides a proof-of-principle for the development of spectroscopy-based approaches when monitoring introduced species, subspecies or provenances.     Effect of Red Clover Isoflavones over Skin, Appendages, and Mucosal Status in Postmenopausal Women

    Objective. Evaluate in postmenopausal women the effect of red clover extract (RCE) isoflavones over subjective status of skin, appendages, and several mucosal sites. Method. Postmenopausal women (n = 109) were randomly assigned to receive either two daily capsules of the active compound (80 mg RCE, Group A) or placebo of equal appearance (Group B) for a 90-day period. After a washout period of 7 days, medication was crossed over and taken for 90 days more. Subjective improvement of skin, appendages, and several mucosal site status was assessed for each studied group at 90 and 187 days using a visual analogue scale (VAS). In addition, libido, tiredness, and urinary, sleep, and mood complaints were also evaluated. Results. Women after RCE intervention (both groups) reported better subjective improvement of scalp hair and skin status, libido, mood, sleep, and tiredness. Improvement of urinary complaints, nail, body hair, and mucosa (oral, nasal, and ocular) status did not differ between treatment phases (intra- and intergroup). Overall satisfaction with treatment was reported higher after RCE intervention (both groups) as compared to placebo. Conclusion. RCE supplementation exerted a subject improvement of scalp hair and skin status as well as libido, mood, sleep, and tiredness in postmenopausal women

    No evidence of extraterrestrial noble metal and helium anomalies at Marinoan glacial termination

The definitive version was published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters 437 (2016): 76-88, doi:10.1016/j.epsl.2015.12.040.High concentrations of extraterrestrial iridium have been reported in terminal Sturtian and Marinoan glacial marine sediments and are used to argue for long (likely 3-12 Myr) durations of these Cryogenian glaciations. Reanalysis of the Marinoan sedimentary rocks used in the original study, supplemented by sedimentary rocks from additional terminal Marinoan sections, however, does not confirm the initial report. New platinum group element concentrations, and 187Os/188Os and 3He/4He signatures are consistent with crustal origin and minimal extraterrestrial contributions. The discrepancy is likely caused by different sample masses used in the two studies, with this study being based on much larger samples that better capture the stochastic distribution of extraterrestrial particles in marine sediments. Strong enrichment of redox-sensitive elements, particularly rhenium, up-section in the basal postglacial cap carbonates, may indicate a return to more fully oxygenated seawater in the aftermath of the Marinoan snowball earth. Sections dominated by hydrogenous osmium indicate increasing submarine hydrothermal sources and/or continental inputs that are increasingly dominated by young mantle-derived rocks after deglaciation. Sedimentation rate estimates for the basal cap carbonates yield surprisingly slow rates of a few centimeters per thousand years. This study highlights the importance of using sedimentary rock samples that represent sufficiently large area-time products to properly sample extraterrestrial particles representatively, and demonstrates the value of using multiple tracers of extraterrestrial matter.We are grateful for support from a 2008 WHOI Summer Student Fellowship for CAW.     Pregnancy outcome in women with polycystic ovary syndrome comparing the effects of laparoscopic ovarian drilling and clomiphene citrate stimulation in women pre-treated with metformin: a retrospective study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Ovarian stimulation in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) increases the risk for perinatal complications. Ovulation induction by laparoscopic ovarian drilling (LOD) might improve the overall pregnancy outcomes. The aim of our study was to assess the adverse events or effects on pregnancy of LOD and clomiphene citrate (CC) stimulation in patients who received metformin.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Setting: Academic research institution. We retrospectively analyzed the courses of 40 spontaneous pregnancies after LOD for CC-resistance, 40 pregnancies after CC stimulation, and 40 pregnancies after metformin treatment alone. Patients in the LOD and the CC groups had been pre-treated with Metformin. Primary outcome parameters were: the rate of multiple pregnancies; the rate of early pregnancy losses/miscarriages; the development of gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and preeclampsia/HELLP-syndrome; premature delivery; and birth weight.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The rate of twin pregnancies did not differ between the CC group (12.5%), the LOD group (7.5%), and the metformin only group (2.5%, p = 0.239). Seventeen women suffered an early miscarriage. There were no differences with regard to the rates of gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, preeclampsia, and preterm delivery. By analyzing all pregnancy complications together, the overall pregnancy complication rate was highest in the CC group (70.0%, 28/40), followed by the LOD group (45.0%, 18/40), and the metformin only group (47.5%, 19/40; p = 0.047).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>CC, but not LOD, increases the complication rate in pregnant patients who received metformin.</p

    Laborschule Bielefeld. Doing teacher research in an embryonic society

    In this chapter, educators from Laborschule Bielefeld as well as researchers from its Research Unit present the school. For context, they begin with an introduction to the fairly complex German school system before tracing Laborschule’s origins. Regarding Laborschule’s manifold research activities, they first outline the structures and processes that have been developed over the last decades. In a second step, they draw on the research principles of laboratory schools outlined in the introduction to illustrate the school’s research approach. To paint a vivid picture of the school, they will outline its pedagogical concept, introduce several elements of democratic education, and illustrate how this comes to life at the different key stages of Laborschule. They end by reflecting on current developments and challenges as well as by taking a look at the school’s future. (DIPF/Orig.

    Luteinizing hormone and androstendione are independent predictors of ovulation after laparoscopic ovarian drilling: a retrospective cohort study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Our objective was to investigate luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, and androstenedione as predicitve markers for ovulation after laparoscopic ovarian drilling.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We retrospectively analyzed 100 clompihen-resistant patients with the polycystic ovary syndrome who underwent laparoscopic ovarian drilling at our department. The main outcome measure was spontaneous postoperative ovulation within three months after laparoscopic ovarian drilling. In order to predict spontaneous ovulation, we tested the following parameters by use of a univariate followed by a multivariate regression model: Preoperative serum levels of LH, FSH, testosterone, and androstenedione as well as patients' age and body mass index. In addition, we focused on pregnancy and life birth rates.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Spontaneous ovulation was documented in 71/100 patients (71.0%). In a univariate and multivariate analysis, luteinizing hormone (OR 1.58, 95%CI: 1.30-1.92) and androstenedione (OR 3.03, 95%CI: 1.20-7.67), but not follicle-stimulating hormone and testosterone were independent predictors of ovulation. Using a cut-off for luteinizing hormone and androstenedione of 12.1 IU/l and 3.26 ng/ml, respectively, spontaneous ovulation was observed in 63/70 (90.0%) and 36/42 patients (85.7%) with elevated and in 8/30 (26.7%) and 35/58 (60.3%) patients with low luteinizing hormone and androstenedione levels, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negatvie predictive values for luteinizing hormone and androstendione as predictors of spontaneous ovulation after ovarian drilling were 88.7% (95%CI: 79.0-95.0%), 75.9% (95%CI: 56.5-89.7%), 90.0% (95%CI: 80.5-95.8%), and 73.3% (95%CI: 54.1-87.7%) for luteinizing hormone, and 50.7% (95%CI: 38.6-62.8%), 79.3% (95%CI: 60.3-92.0%), 85.7% (95%CI: 71.5-94.6%), and 39.7% (95%CI: 27.0-53.4%) for androstenedione, respectively. Complete one-year follow-up was available for 74/100 patients (74%). We observed a one-year pregnancy rate and a resulting life-birth rate of 61% and 51%, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Luteinizing hormone and androstenedione prior to laparoscopic ovarian drilling are independent predictors of spontaneous ovulation within three months of surgery. We suggest to preferentially performing laparoscopic ovarian drilling in patients with high luteinizing hormone and androstenedione levels.</p

    Tryptophan degradation in women with breast cancer: a pilot study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Altered tryptophan metabolism and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase activity are linked to cancer development and progression. In addition, these biological factors have been associated with the development and severity of neuropsychiatric syndromes, including major depressive disorder. However, this biological mechanism associated with both poor disease outcomes and adverse neuropsychiatric symptoms has received little attention in women with breast cancer. Therefore, a pilot study was undertaken to compare levels of tryptophan and other proteins involved in tryptophan degradation in women with breast cancer to women without cancer, and secondarily, to examine levels in women with breast caner over the course of chemotherapy.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Blood samples were collected from women with a recent diagnosis of breast cancer (<it>n </it>= 33) before their first cycle of chemotherapy and after their last cycle of chemotherapy. The comparison group (<it>n </it>= 24) provided a blood sample prior to breast biopsy. Plasma concentrations of tryptophan, kynurenine, and tyrosine were determined. The kynurenine to tryptophan ratio (KYN/TRP) was used to estimate indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase activity. On average, the women with breast cancer had lower levels of tryptophan, elevated levels of kynurenine and tyrosine and an increased KYN/TRP ratio compared to women without breast cancer. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in the KYN/TRP ratio (<it>p </it>= 0.036), which remained elevated in women with breast cancer throughout the treatment trajectory.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The findings of this pilot study suggest that increased tryptophan degradation may occur in women with early-stage breast cancer. Given the multifactorial consequences of increased tryptophan degradation in cancer outcomes and neuropsychiatric symptom manifestation, this biological mechanism deserves broader attention in women with breast cancer.</p
