To examine the effect of ontogeny on metabolic depression in the cunner (Tautogolabrus adspersus), and to understand how ontogeny and the ability to metabolically depress influence this species' upper thermal tolerance: 1) the metabolic rate of 9°C-acclimated cunner of three size classes [0.2–0.5 g, young of the year (YOY); 3–6 g, small; and 80–120 g, large (adult)] was measured during a 2°C per day decrease in temperature; and 2) the metabolic response of the same three size classes of cunner to an acute thermal challenge [2°C h−1 from 10°C until Critical Thermal Maximum, CTMax] was examined, and compared to that of the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). The onset-temperature for metabolic depression in cunner increased with body size, i.e. from 5°C in YOY cunner to 7°C in adults. In contrast, the extent of metabolic depression was ∼80% (Q10 = ∼15) for YOY fish, ∼65% (Q10 = ∼8) for small fish and ∼55% (Q10 = ∼5) for adults, and this resulted in the metabolic scaling exponent (b) gradually increasing from 0.84 to 0.92 between 9°C to 1°C. All size classes of cunner had significantly (approximately 60%) lower routine metabolic rates at 10°C than Atlantic cod. However, there was no species' difference in the temperature-induced maximum metabolic rate, and this resulted in factorial metabolic scope values that were more than two-fold greater for cunner, and CTMax values that were 6–9°C higher (∼21 vs. 28°C). These results: 1) show that ontogeny influences the temperature of initiation and the extent of metabolic depression in cunner, but not O2 consumption when in a hypometabolic state; and 2) suggest that the evolution of cold-induced metabolic depression in this northern wrasse species has not resulted in a trade-off with upper thermal tolerance, but instead, an enhancement of this species' metabolic plasticity

Aims: Polymorphisms of the ADIPOQ gene were associated with diabetic nephropathy (DN) in case-control studies predominantly among European populations. Gender may modify the ADIPOQ associated risk for DN. We investigated the association of 18 ADIPOQ polymorphisms with DN in a prospective Taiwanese cohort of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and explored whether gender plays a role in this genetic association. Methods: Selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of ADIPOQ were genotyped in 566 T2D patients with normoalbuminuria at baseline. DN was defined based on urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR). The Cox proportional hazard model was used to explore the association of individual SNP to DN events under different genetic models over a 6-year follow-up period. Analyses were further stratified by gender. Results: In male patients, the adjusted hazard ratios under the recessive models were 1.81 for rs2241766 TT (vs. GT+GG, 95% CI=1.10-2.96, p=0.019) and 1.89 for rs1063537 CC (vs. CT+TT, 95% CI=1.15-3.11, p=0.013). In the Kaplan-Meier survival curve, males carrying rs2241766 TT (vs. GT+GG, p=0.050) and rs1063537 CC (vs. CT+TT, p=0.037) recessive homozygotes also had a reduced nephropathy-free survival rate. SNPs rs2241767 and rs2082940, both in strong correlation with tag SNP rs1063537 (r≥0.96), were also associated with DN progression in males. In females, ADIPOQ polymorphisms were not associated with the progression of DN. Conclusions: ADIPOQ genetic polymorphisms rs2241766 (+45T>G), rs1063537, rs2241767 and rs2082940 were correlated with the progression of DN in Taiwanese male patients with T2D. The role of gender in this ADIPOQ genetic association needs to be further investigated in other populations

Seventy-eight tomato and pepper plants showing symptoms were tested for tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus (TSWV) using specific primers targeting the full coat protein gene (CP) through RT-PCR. Plant samples were collected in Denizli region, Türkiye during September 2021. The PCR screening results revealed that 23 samples were infected with TSWV, indicating an infection rate of 29.48%. PCR products were subsequently sequenced bidirectionally, and the obtained sequences were deposited in GenBank under the accession numbers ON323583-84 for pepper, and OQ597214 for tomato. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated a close relationship between the Turkish-Denizli TSWV isolates and previously reported isolates from tomato and pepper plants in Türkiye (KM407603), Hungary (KJ649612), and Serbia (GU369723). Moreover, in this study, three commercial chemicals and five selected phytochemicals were docked against the TSWV CP to assess their binding energies. The docking results indicate that the tested phytochemicals exhibit promising performance compared to other commercial chemicals. This study represents the first molecular and phylogenetic report on TSWV isolates in pepper and tomato plants in Denizli province, Türkiye. Furthermore, the interaction between TSWV and the selected compounds through in silico docking has been reported for the first time

Nanoindentation study of corrosion-induced grain boundary degradation in a pipeline steel

    Get PDF
High-strength low-alloy steels used for oil and gas pipelines are vulnerable to intergranular stress corrosion cracking in moderately alkaline soils. The mechanism of corrosion-induced embrittlement under such conditions is not yet understood. Nanoindentation was used to detect localized degradation of mechanical properties near internal grain boundaries of X-70 steel undergoing intergranular corrosion at active dissolution potentials at pH 8.2. The measurements identified a one-micron thick mechanically-degraded layer with 25% reduced hardness near corroded grain boundaries. It is suggested that the corrosion process may introduce an active softening agent, possibly non-equilibrium lattice vacancies generated by oxidation

Background: This study focused on an online education program based on Individual and Family Self-Management Theory. Purpose: The study investigated whether the education program affected adolescents' attitudes toward epilepsy, seizure self-efficacy, quality of life, and their parents' perceived nurse-support levels. Methods: The study is a single-blind, randomized, controlled trial. The study was conducted in the pediatric neurology outpatient clinic of a medical hospital between January 2021 and April 2022 in Konya. The sample consisted of adolescents with epilepsy (n = 36) and their parents (n = 36). The intervention group attended the education program in three main sessions, two weeks apart. The control group received routine education. Data were collected using a Child Demographics Form (CDF), a Parent Demographics Form (PDF), the Child Attitude Toward Illness Scale (CATIS), the Self-Efficacy Scale for Children with Epilepsy (SSES-C), the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), and the Nurse Parents Support Tool (NPST). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's chi-square test, Fisher's Exact test, independent samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Mixed design ANOVA analysis, Cohen's d, and 95 % confidence interval. This study adhered to CONSORT research guidelines. Results: The intervention group adolescents had a significantly higher mean of all scale scores than the control group adolescents. The intervention group parents had a significantly higher mean NPST score than the control group parents. Conclusion: Healthcare professionals should organize theory-based online education programs for adolescents and their parents at regular intervals for the self-management of epilepsy in special situations, such as pandemics, where face-to-face education is impossible. Practice implications: The study revealed that, unlike existing cues that highlight the effectiveness of face-to-face education, online interventions will strengthen epilepsy self-management of children with epilepsy and their parents. In extreme situations where face-to-face education has to be postponed for a long time and in routine education interventions, it is recommended to plan and implement online education so that children with chronic diseases can maintain their self-management. Pipeline steels are vulnerable to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) during intergranular corrosion (IGC) at potentials of active dissolution in moderately alkaline carbonate-bicarbonate solutions. Morphology evolution accompanying IGC has not been fully described, despite the relevance of the corrosion geometry to crack initiation. The present article reports a characterization of concurrent morphology and mechanical stress development during the initial stages of IGC of X70 steel in sodium bicarbonate solution, in the potential range of high SCC susceptibility. Morphology was revealed by scanning electron microscope examination of cross sections through the IGC layer, and stress evolution was monitored by curvature interferometry. At potentials in the range of SCC susceptibility, IGC creates triangular wedges of porous corrosion product centered at grain boundary triple junctions. The wedge shape indicates a higher corrosion rate at the grain boundary compared to the grain surfaces. Compressive stress is generated during IGC due to internal oxidation on grain surfaces forming a thin compact corrosion product layer. Polarization at a potential below the SCC range resulted in selective grain dissolution with no internal corrosion product or compressive stress increase. Silicon solute atoms are selectively oxidized into the compact grain boundary corrosion product film

We aimed to present this extreme and unusual entity with its radiological, surgical, and pathologic aspects under the light of literature

Investigation of the acute effect of different warm-up protocols on test performance in young soccer players

    Get PDF
Background and Study Aim. Effective warm-up strategies are crucial for optimizing performance in team sports. However, identifying the most effective protocols requires consideration of the specific conditions and age of young athletes. The purpose of this study is to examine the acute effects of three different warm-up programs on specific test performance responses in young soccer players. Material and Methods. Twenty-three amateur soccer players (age = 15.13 ± 0.81 years) participated in the study. The athletes performed a dynamic warm-up along with two different neuromuscular warm-up programs: the FIFA 11+ and the Injury Prevention and Performance Enhancement Program. Performance responses in sprint, jump, and agility tests were measured. Data normality was assessed with the Shapiro-Wilk test. The effects of the warm-up protocols were analyzed using one-way repeated measures ANOVA, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results. The research findings revealed a statistically significant difference in the 10m sprint, 20m sprint, vertical jump, and zig-zag agility tests, both with and without the ball, when using the FIFA 11+ warm-up program (p < 0.05). The study demonstrated that the FIFA 11+ warm-up program improved performance responses more effectively than the other warm-up programs. This warm-up protocol enhances neuromuscular control by increasing the activation of the core, hip, and leg muscles. Conclusions. The study demonstrates that the FIFA 11+ warm-up program significantly enhances performance in specific tests, such as sprinting, jumping, and agility. Coaches are encouraged to implement the FIFA 11+ protocol in both training sessions and pre-match routines to optimize athletic performance in young soccer players
