Estimation of the sugar content of fruit by energy-resolved computed tomography using a material decomposition method

We have been developing energy-resolved X-ray computed tomography (ER-CT) using a novel detector system called a transXend detector, which measures X-rays as electric current and gives the energy distribution of X-rays by unfolding analysis. This paper presents the results of the sugar content measurements of kiwifruit samples by ER-CT. Because the change of linear attenuation coefficients as a function of sugar content was small, we used a material decomposition method instead of the unfolding method to deduce the linear attenuation coefficient from the measured electric current. The obtained sugar contents showed good agreement with those measured by a refractometer

Statistische Beobachtungen an Herpes zoster.

Der Verfasser machte in den Jahren 1928-1937 an uber 126 Herpes zoster-Fallen, die in der Dermatourologischen Klinik der Medizinischen Fakultat Okayama zur Behandlung kamen, statistische Beobachtungen. Das Ergebnis ist folgendes : 1. Die Gesamtzahl der in der Klinik behandelten Kranken betrug, mit Ausnahme der an Gonorrhoea Erkrankten, 18403 (Manner 10596 ; Frauen 7807). Darunter befanden sich 126 Herpes zoster-Kranke (0,684%) namlich 78 Manner und 48 Frauen (0,736 bzw. 0,615%). 2. Die Krankheit tritt am haufigsten bei Funfzigern, am seltensten bei DreiBigern auf. Der alteste Kranke war ein Mann von 78 Jahren, der jungste ein Kind von 4 Jahren. 3, Da Okayama Kreisstadt eines vorwiegend landlichen Bezirks ist, kommt Herpes zoster am haufigsten bei Bauern und Kaufleuten vor. 4. Regen, Temperaturextreme und Feuchtigkeit der Luft riefen in Okayama nie eine Herpes zoster-Epidemie hervor, doch kam die Krankheit am haufigsten in der heiBen und feuchten Regenzeit vor. 1935 war die Krankheit am haufigsten. Dem zunachst kamen 1932 u. 1933. 1927 war die Krankenzahl am geringsten. 5. Der bevorzugte Sitz der Krankheit ist der Leib ; dahn folgen Kopf, Arme und Beine. Bei Mannern hatte die Krankheit fur gewohnlich beide Korperseiten in gleicher Weise befallen, bei Frauen war die linke Seite bevorzugt. 6. Die subjektiven Beschwerden der Kranken waren in 76,3% der Falle Schmerz, in 20% Juckgefuhl, in 1,82% erfolgten keine Klagen ; sonstige 1,82%.. Alte Leute klagten im allgemeinen ilber Schmerz, 7. Wahrend 10 Jahren (1928-1937) hat der Verfasser bei den Patienten, die zur Klinik kamen, Monat fur Monat den Ausbruch von Herpes zoster,' Herpes simplex, Varicella, Erythema exs:udativum multiforme und Erythema nodosum beobachtet. - Das Ergebnis wurde graphisch dargestellt. Die Kurve von Herpes zoster ahnelt der voh Erythema exsudativum multiforme und die von Herpes simplex der von Erythema nodosum, vollig abweichend dagegen ist. die Kurve von Varicella.</p

III. Über den Einfluss der Splenektomie. Studien über den Kohlehydratstoffwechsel bei experimentellen Syphiliskaninchen

Bei der Benutzung einiger experimentell syphilitisch gemachten Kaninchen, bei denen der gebundene Blutzucker und das Serumeiweiss eine quantitative Erhöhung erfahren, hat der Verf. in der vorliegenden Mitteilung die Einflüsse der Milzexstirpation auf diese Substanzen, d.h. die Beziehungen zwischen der Milz und dem Kohlehydratstoffwechsel festzustellen versucht. Die Methode der Untersuchung war die gleiche wie die der I. Mitteilung. Die Ergebnisse lassen sich kurz folgendermassen zusammenfassen. 1. Bei Kaninchen tritt in der Konzentration des freien Blutzuckers keinerlei erhebliche Veränderung durch die Milzexstirpation ein. Bei entmilzten Kaninchen ist die Konzentration des freien Blutzuckers auch in dem Falle, wo die Syphilis übertragen worden ist, annähernd die gleiche wie bei den gewöhnlichen Syphiliskaninchen. 2. Durch die Milzexstirpation erfährt bei den Kaninchen der gebundene Blutzucker in der Menge einen rapiden Anstieg, nach Ablauf von 5-6 Wochen aber kehrt er wieder zum Wert vor der Milzexstirpation zurück. Nach der Impfung der Lues-Erreger verläuft die Kurve des gebundenen Blutzuckers bei entmilzten Kaninchen im grossen and ganzen ähnlich wie bei Milz-enthaltenen Kaninchen, nach der Entstehung von Schanker jedoch neigt sich der gebundene Blutzucker quantitativ viel erheblicher und längerandauernd anzusteigen als bei Milz-enthaltenen Lues-Kaninchen. 3. 1-2 Wochen lang wird bei normalen Kaninchen nach der Milzexstirpation eine leichtgradige Verringerung des Serumeiweisses beobachtet, welche ader im weiteren Verlauf von 5-6 Wochen allmahlich zuruckgebildet wird. Die Kurve des Verhältnisses des Albumin zum-Globulin scheint im Stadium der quantitativen Rückkehr des Serumeiweisses zur Norm in die Höhe getrieben zu werdcn. Durch Impfung der Lues-Spirochäten tritt bei entmilzten Kaninchen die Tendenz auf, dass die Kurve des Serumeiweisses einerseits einen der Kurve des Milz-enthaltenen Syphilis-Kaninchens annähernd analogen Verlauf zeigt und andererseits mit der Kurve des gebundenen Blutzuckers übereinstimmt. Die Kurve des Verhältnisses zwischen dem Albumin und Globulin zeigt im allgemeinen die Tendenz, in die Hohe anzusteigen. Daneben wird beobachtet, dass diese Kurve von der des Milzenthaltenen Syphilis-Kaninchens in auffallend erheblichem Masse abweicht und dass sie mit der des gebundenen Blutzuckers in keiner bestimmten Beziehung steht. 4. Durch Impfung der Spirochaete pallida unmittelbar nach der Milzexstirpation tritt im Zeitpunkt der Entstehung der initialen Induration keinerlei Veranderung ein, während der Eintritt der Murata'schen Reaktion sich verzögert. 5. Die Impfuug der Lues-Erreger führt die meisten der entmilzten Kaninchen 9-14 Wochen danach zum Verenden. Im Endstadium erfolgt sowohl bei dem freien als auch gebundenen Blutzucker in den meisten Fällen eine Vermehrung, in der Eiweissmenge sowie im Verhaltnis Albumin: Globulin hingegen keine erhebliche Veranderung

Phonon-mediated spin dynamics in a two-electron double quantum dot under a phonon temperature gradient

We have theoretically studied phonon-mediated spin-flip processes of electrons in a GaAs double quantum dot (DQD) holding two spins, under a phonon temperature gradient over the DQD. Transition rates of inter-dot phonon-assisted tunnel processes and intra-dot spin-flip processes involving spin triplet states are formalized by the electron-phonon interaction accompanied with the spin-orbit interaction. The calculations of the spin-flip rates and the occupation probabilities of the spin-states in the two-electron DQD with respect to the phonon temperature difference between the dots are quantitatively consistent with our previous experiment. This theoretical study on the temperature gradient effect onto spins in coupled QDs would be essential for understanding spin-related thermodynamic physics

Scaling Manifold Ranking Based Image Retrieval

Manifold Ranking is a graph-based ranking algorithm being successfully applied to retrieve images from multimedia databases. Given a query image, Manifold Ranking computes the ranking scores of images in the database by exploiting the relationships among them expressed in the form of a graph. Since Manifold Ranking effectively utilizes the global structure of the graph, it is significantly better at finding intuitive results compared with current approaches. Fundamentally, Manifold Ranking requires an inverse matrix to compute ranking scores and so needs O(n^3) time, where n is the number of images. Manifold Ranking, unfortunately, does not scale to support databases with large numbers of images. Our solution, Mogul, is based on two ideas: (1) It efficiently computes ranking scores by sparse matrices, and (2) It skips unnecessary score computations by estimating upper bounding scores. These two ideas reduce the time complexity of Mogul to O(n) from O(n^3) of the inverse matrix approach. Experiments show that Mogul is much faster and gives significantly better retrieval quality than a state-of-the-art approximation approach

A Water-Free ITIES: Ionic Liquid/Oil Interface for Base Metal Nanostructure Formation - Zn Case

Reductive metal deposition at the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES), the oil/water interface, is an attractive methodology to produce metal nanostructures. However, the metals that can be deposited are limited to noble metals; otherwise, water molecules are reduced. Herein, a method to overcome this limitation by utilizing a novel water-free ITIES between a hydrophilic ionic liquid and oil was introduced. As proof-of-concept experiments, the reductive deposition of zinc, a base metal with a standard redox potential more negative than that of water, was successfully realized at the ionic liquid/oil interface. The morphology of the zinc nanostructures was investigated, and the reaction mechanism was discussed, in which the electron transfer and ion transfer reactions across the interface simultaneously occurred to maintain the electroneutrality of the liquids

大学生のストレス反応に影響を与える諸要因の検討 －共感性、先延ばし傾向、対人ストレスコーピングの視点から－

本研究では、大学生の感じるストレスに対してストレスコーピングのあり方がどのように関連しているか、特に先延ばし傾向が及ぼす影響について男女別に検討した。対象者は大学生３１５名であった。質問紙は、ストレスコーピングに関連のあるとされる共感尺度、先延ばし傾向尺度、対人ストレスコーピング尺度、ストレス反応尺度で構成された。「抑うつ不安」「不機嫌怒り」「無気力」からなるストレス反応について重回帰分析を行った結果、男子では全てのストレス反応に対して先延ばし傾向の影響が大きいことが明らかとなった。また、女子では先延ばし傾向よりも被影響性の影響が大きいことがわかった。以上よりストレス反応に影響を与える傾向やコーピング手段が男女で異なり、ストレス反応の低減のために男子は問題を後回しにしないことや独りよがりにならないこと、女子は男子の傾向に加えて周囲に影響を受けすぎないことが重要であることが示唆された。This research considered the influence which the state of stress-coping and “procrastination" is related to the stress which a university student feels, according to sex. Subjects were 315 university students. The question paper was constituted from the “sympathy", “procrastination", “interpersonal stress-coping", and “stress reaction" measure which is supposed by stress-coping. As a result of performing multiple linear regression analysis about the stress reaction which consists of “depression uneasiness", “ill-humored anger", and “enervation", the influence of “procrastination" became clear to all stress reactions in men. Moreover, it turned out that “influenced state" effects to a stress reaction larger than “procrastination" in women. Therefore it turned out that the characteristic and stress-coping means affecting a stress reaction is different by men and women. Moreover, it was suggested that men does not defer a problem for reduction of a stress reaction or not become self-satisfied. Full Counting Statistics of Spin-Flip/Conserving Charge Transitions in Pauli-Spin Blockade

We investigate the full counting statistics (FCS) of spin-conserving and spin-flip charge transitions in Pauli-spin blockade regime of a GaAs double quantum dot. A theoretical model is proposed to evaluate all spin-conserving and spin-flip tunnel rates, and to demonstrate the fundamental relation between FCS and waiting time distribution. We observe the remarkable features of parity effect and a tail structure in the constructed FCS, which do not appear in the Poisson distribution, and are originated from spin degeneracy and coexistence of slow and fast transitions, respectively. This study is potentially useful for elucidating the spin-related and other complex transition dynamics in quantum systems
