    The role of thrombomodulin lectin-like domain in inflammation

    Thrombomodulin (TM) is a cell surface glycoprotein which is widely expressed in a variety of cell types. It is a cofactor for thrombin binding that mediates protein C activation and inhibits thrombin activity. In addition to its anticoagulant activity, recent evidence has revealed that TM, especially its lectin-like domain, has potent anti-inflammatory function through a variety of molecular mechanisms. The lectin-like domain of TM plays an important role in suppressing inflammation independent of the TM anticoagulant activity. This article makes an extensive review of the role of TM in inflammation. The molecular targets of TM lectin-like domain have also been elucidated. Recombinant TM protein, especially the TM lectin-like domain may play a promising role in the management of sepsis, glomerulonephritis and arthritis. These data demonstrated the potential therapeutic role of TM in the treatment of inflammatory diseases

    Qubit Mapping Toward Quantum Advantage

    Qubit Mapping is a pivotal stage in quantum compilation flow. Its goal is to convert logical circuits into physical circuits so that a quantum algorithm can be executed on real-world non-fully connected quantum devices. Qubit Mapping techniques nowadays still lack the key to quantum advantage, scalability. Several studies have proved that at least thousands of logical qubits are required to achieve quantum computational advantage. However, to our best knowledge, there is no previous research with the ability to solve the qubit mapping problem with the necessary number of qubits for quantum advantage in a reasonable time. In this work, we provide the first qubit mapping framework with the scalability to achieve quantum advantage while accomplishing a fairly good performance. The framework also boasts its flexibility for quantum circuits of different characteristics. Experimental results show that the proposed mapping method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on quantum circuit benchmarks by improving over 5% of the cost complexity in one-tenth of the program running time. Moreover, we demonstrate the scalability of our method by accomplishing mapping of an 11,969-qubit Quantum Fourier Transform within five hours

    Successful treatment of an early invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma with topical 5-aminolevulinic acid-mediated photodynamic therapy

    Our previous studies showed successful treatment of a series of 36 oral verrucous hyperplasia lesions and of an extensive oral verrucous carcinoma with a topical 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-mediated photodynamic therapy (topical ALA-PDT) protocol (with a fluence rate of 100 mW/cm2 and a light exposure dose of 100 J/cm2) using a 635-nm light-emitting diode (LED) light source. In this case report, we tested whether an enhanced topical ALA-PDT protocol (with a fluence rate of 200 mW/cm2 and a light exposure dose of 200 J/cm2) could be used to treat an early invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) with a verrucous appearance of the left lower posterior edentulous alveolar mucosa of a 67-year-old male former areca-quid chewer and ex-smoker. The main verrucous lesion showed complete regression after eight treatments with PDT. However, 10 extra treatments were needed to eradicate the multiple residual leukoplakia lesions on the edentulous alveolar mucosa. Moderate to severe post-PDT pain was noted during the initial eight treatments, and the patient needed analgesics (codeine phosphate, 30 mg three times daily) to control the pain. No recurrence of the OSCC lesion was found after a follow-up period of 4 years. We suggest that our enhanced topical ALA-PDT protocol may have good potential to be used as a treatment of choice for a superficially invasive OSCC without regional or distant metastasis before the commencement of other effective therapies

    Effect of Process Parameters of CNT Containing Friction Powder on Flexural Properties and Friction Performance of Organic Brake Friction Materials

    This research is to investigate the influences of carbon nanotube (CNT) containing friction powder prepared through different process parameters on flexural properties and friction performance of organic brake friction materials. Experimental results indicate significant influence on flexural property and friction performance of organic brake friction materials when the modified CNT/friction powders are adopted. Particularly for the specimens adopted the modified CNT/friction powders prepared through 2.0ā€‰M concentration of catalyst and 30% C2H2 show the highest flexural strength, better ductility and toughness, most stable friction coefficient, and lowest weight loss. However, too many amorphous carbon clusters and CNTs aggregation derived from higher concentration of catalyst and ratio of C2H2/N2 would cause poor formation of specimens and reduction of reinforcement effectiveness

    Dome-Shaped Ellipsoidal Reflector Antenna for UHF-RFID Readers with Confined Near-Field Detection Region

    This letter proposes and demonstrates the concept of ellipsoidal reflector antennas for radio frequency identification reader applications at UHF band. The antenna can be potentially integrated with environmental structures to confine the reader detection region. The energy bounding characteristics result from the dual-focus feature of an ellipsoidal reflector in its near-field region, as the feed located at one of the two foci can create a focused field distribution around the other focus. An axial energy focusing is, thus, formed to confine the energy in a restricted region (near-field beam focusing), also minimizing the interference effects outside of the targeted area. Both numerical simulations and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of this antenna concept

    Atypical Presentation of Spinal Epidural Abscessā€”Prolonged and Intractable Abdominal Pain

    SummaryDespite advances in medicine, early diagnosis of spinal epidural abscess remains a challenge to clinicians. The most common symptoms of spinal epidural abscess include back pain, fever, and neuralgic deficits. However, spinal epidural abscess can also present with vague and nonspecific symptoms. In this case, a 68-year-old male had abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant lasting 3 weeks and was diagnosed with a gastric ulcer. After treatment, his symptoms did not resolve. Fever and back pain became evident as his disease progressed, followed by right lower limb weakness and the inability to walk. He was taken to the emergency department of our hospital, and the weakness of his lower extremities worsened during hospitalization. His right leg became completely paralyzed despite the use of intravenous antibiotics. A spinal computed tomography scan was performed emergently (magnetic resonance imaging was unavailable) and revealed an epidural abscess involving T5ā€“6 with adjacent osteomyelitis. The patient underwent posterior decompressive laminectomy with pus drainage in the T4ā€“7 region. His neuralgic examinations improved soon after the operation, but ambulation remained limited. Early diagnosis is crucial to the prognosis of spinal epidural abscess, because delayed diagnosis usually results in complete paralysis even death. Thus, clinicians should be aware of atypical presentations of spinal epidural abscess

    Effects of income and residential area on survival of patients with head and neck cancers following radiotherapy: working age individuals in Taiwan

    Objectives The five-year survival rate of head and neck cancer (HNC) after radiotherapy (RT) varies widely from 35% to 89%. Many studies have addressed the effect of socioeconomic status and urban dwelling on the survival of HNC, but a limited number of studies have focused on the survival rate of HNC patients after RT. Materials and methods During the period of 2000ā€“2013, 40,985 working age individuals (20 Ā medium income group >Ā low income group and northern >Ā central >Ā southern >Ā eastern Taiwan. Patients with moderate income levels had a 36.9% higher risk of mortality as compared with patients with high income levels (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.369; pĀ <Ā 0.001). Patients with low income levels had a 51.4% greater risk of mortality than patients with high income levels (HR = 1.514, pĀ <Ā 0.001). Conclusion In Taiwan, income and residential area significantly affected the survival rate of HNC patients receiving RT. The highest income level group had the best survival rate, regardless of the geographic area. The difference in survival between the low and high income groups was still pronounced in more deprived areas

    Management and control of coccidiosis in poultry ā€” A review

    Poultry coccidiosis is an intestinal infection caused by an intracellular parasitic protozoan of the genus Eimeria. Coccidia-induced gastrointestinal inflammation results in large economic losses, hence finding methods to decrease its prevalence is critical for industry participants and academic researchers. It has been demonstrated that coccidiosis can be effectively controlled and managed by employing anticoccidial chemical compounds. However, as a result of their extensive use, anticoccidial drug resistance in Eimeria species has raised concerns. Phytochemical/herbal medicines (Artemisia annua, Bidens pilosa, and garlic) seem to be a promising strategy for preventing coccidiosis, in accordance with the ā€œanticoccidial chemical-freeā€ standards. The impact of herbal supplements on poultry coccidiosis is based on the reduction of oocyst output by preventing the proliferation and growth of Eimeria species in chicken gastrointestinal tissues and lowering intestinal permeability via increased epithelial turnover. This review provides a thorough up-to-date assessment of the state of the art and technologies in the prevention and treatment of coccidiosis in chickens, including the most used phytochemical medications, their mode of action, and the applicable legal framework in the European Union
