Justification and Interlaced Knowledge at ATLAS, CERN

We report on a longitudinal study of the emergence of the ATLAS detector, a complex technological system developed at CERN, Geneva. Our data show that the coordination of initial architectural choices was driven by cycles of contestation and justification that resulted in the creation of what we term interlaced knowledge-pockets of shared knowledge interwoven within and across subsystem communities at ATLAS. We also found that these justifications were possible because of the presence of a boundary infrastructure that served as a common substrate of knowledge for all ATLAS participants. Together, the boundary infrastructure and interlaced knowledge enabled participants to make co-oriented technological choices, address latent interdependencies, and minimize the incidence and severity of glitches when integrating the various subsystems

Perceptions of status and TMO workgroup cooperation: implications for project governance

Achieving and sustaining the cooperation of individuals with their temporary multi-organization (TMO) workgroups is, arguably, one of the most enduring challenges facing the construction sector. A mediational model connecting pride and self-respect to each of four dimensions of cooperative behaviour-in-role, compliance, extra-role, and deference-is tested in a survey sample of 140 construction professionals in Hong Kong. Bootstrap tests of the indirect effect of pride on cooperative behaviour suggest that self-respect fully mediates the influence of pride on in-role behaviour and compliance behaviour, and partially mediates the influence of pride on extra-role behaviour. The results also suggest that pride has no effect on deference behaviour. While needing corroboration by future research, the findings suggest that viable strategies designed to foster pride and self-respect could engender and sustain cooperation in construction TMO workgroups, and support ongoing efforts to reform construction. The bootstrapping procedures for testing intervening variable models are elaborated in the hope that this will encourage more process analysis research in construction. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC

Trump Peace Plan: A Good Diagnosis But Bad Medication

Since the time it was unveiled in the White House on January 28, 2020, Peace to Prosperity: A Vision to Improve the Lives of the Palestinian and Israeli People or more commonly known as Trump Plan, is a non-starter. As it was being announced, two main protagonists—President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—were fighting for their political survival. The US Senate was deliberating the House Resolution to impeach President Trump and moments before the White House event, Israel's Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit formally filed charges of corruption against Netanyahu in a court in Jerusalem. However, both leaders managed to weather the political storm; if the Senate acquitted the US President, the inconclusive March 2, 2020, Knesset elections—the third within a year—injected fresh hopes for the Likud leader. However, even the little hopes people had about the Plan were firmly buried in the pandemic coronavirus and the unfolding worldwide health emergency, mounting human casualties, and the impending global economic collapse
