Seasonal variation of ichthyofauna in trawling grounds off Mangaluru coast, Southwest coast of India
364-372Mangaluru coast, Southwest coast of India has vast aquatic bio-resources and offers considerable scope for marine fisheries development. The present investigation was carried out to assess the ichthyofaunal diversity off Mangaluru coast, Karnataka, India (Lat.12°50'54" N; Long. 74°50'11" E). The data for the study was collected from 160 multiday trawlers operating from Mangaluru fishing harbour during September, 2012 to April, 2013. A total of 97 species belonging to 72 genera, 50 families and 15 orders were recorded. Order Perciformes was the most diversified group having 56 fish species (57.7 %) followed by Clupeiformes 14 fish species (14.4 %), and Tetraodontiformes and Pleuronectiformes with 4 fish species each (4.1 %). The family Carangidae contributed 13.4 per cent of total number of species, followed by Clupeidae (6.2 %) and Engraulidae (5.2 %). Trichiurus lepturus contributed 15.42 per cent of total landing followed by Sardinella longiceps (12.1 %), Nemipterus japonicus (10.7 %), Decapterus russelli (9.9 %), Rastrelliger kanagurta (9.6 %) and Nemipterus randalli (8.4 %). The overall cluster analysis of the Bray-Curtis similarity (hierarchical clustering) shown that maximum similarity (89.7 %) was between March-2013 and April-2013. The study showed that the samples from adjacent months were having more similarity in species composition and abundance. The stress value, which overlying on the MDS plot (0.06), showed greater extent of ordination in the collected samples
Decision Making Behaviour of Fisherwomen of Dakshina Kannada District of Karnataka - An Empirical Analysis
Among the different sectors of the Indian economy
where women contribute significantly, fisheries
sector occupies a prime place. Out of the total
fisherfolk population of Karnataka, comprising
1 67 429, around 23 000 fisherwomen are actively
involved in fisheries related activities such as
marketing of fish, net making/repairing, curing/
processing, peeling, labour and other miscellaneous
activities. Though, studies have captured the pivotal
role played by fisherwomen in income generation
for their families, the decision making behavior, a
key parameter of their empowerment status, remains
an unexplored area. The present study deals
with the areas of decision making in which
fisherwomen are involved and the influence of
socio-economic status on their decision making
behavior. The study was undertaken in three
selected villages in Dakshina Kannada district of
Karnataka using multi stage random sampling
method. From the findings, it was observed that,
84.16% of female fresh fish vendors had medium
level of decision making behaviour. Fisherwomen
were observed to be the sole and independent
decision makers with respect to all aspects of fish
marketing such as source of fish purchase, rate and
quantity to be purchased, transportation, quantity of
ice to be used, selling price, time of fish sales,
purchasing and hiring of equipment and getting and
repaying credits
Mixed germ cell tumour of testis: a case report with review of literature
Testicular tumours are rare neoplasm. Mixed germ cell tumour is the most common histological variant. Essentially, any admixture of the germ cell tumours as seen in pure form may be seen, one of the most common admixtures being embryonal carcinoma and teratoma. Unfortunately many of these patients present late usually with some complications. We present a rare case of mixed germ cell tumour with predominant embryonal carcinoma and yolk sac tumour in adolescent patient with multiple metastatic foci at the time of presentation
Finfish constituents of trawl low value by-catch off Mangalore
Trawling remains a controversial method of fishing due to the poor selectivity of trawl net and catching of hugequantity and diversity of non target fishes. By-catch is recognised as an unavoidable portion of fish catch but quantity variesaccording to the type of gear operated. FAO has considered the resource damage due to discarding of by-catch as serious issue.Mangalore fisheries harbour is one among the major fishing harbours of Karnataka state with its significant contribution tothe Trawl landings. The study was conducted to assess the recourse damage due to indiscriminate fishing and landing of juveniles of commercially important species in low value by-catch due to smaller size and improper handling. The quantity of lowvalue by-catch was estimated from the landings of single-day and multi-day trawler landings for the period of August 2012 toMay 2013. The quantity of low value by-catch (trash fish) generated by trawlers of Mangalore was estimated as 32,426 t (19%of the total trawl catch). A total 121 species of finfishes belonging to 55 families have been identified constituting the low valueby-catch. Order Perciformes contributed 61.16 per cent (74 species) to the total number of species, followed by Clupeiformesand other groups, whereas the family Carangidae contributed 11.57 per cent (14 species) to the total number of species, followedby Engraulidae and other families. Presence of wide diversity of finfishes in low value by-catch showed an alarming signal of fisheries resource damage

Characterization of low value bycatch in trawl fisheries off Karnataka coast, India and its impact on juveniles of commercially important fish species
Trawl fishery is a mixed fishery targeting numerous species and sizes simultaneously, and therefore remains a controversial fishing method due to consequential catch of huge amount of non-targeted species. Along with non-commercial species, bycatch also includes commercial species that are below minimum legal size (MLS) or less profitable fishes owing to market conditions. Advanced technologies in fishing methods and fleet infrastructure are being introduced and practiced. Such developments have ensued in heavy exploitation of juveniles of commercially important fishes. Mangaluru fisheries harbour witnessed an average 168 thousand tonnes (t) of trawl landings/year in 2012-14, of which 133 thousand t (79 %) was retained for edible purpose and 0.35 thousand t (21 %) was marked as “low value bycatch” (LVB) which mainly transported as raw material for fish meal production. To assess the sustainability of marine fisheries production, it is important to understand the species composition and the juvenile composition of the fishes in LVB. A total of 121 species of finfishes were recorded from LVB of multiday trawlers (MDT). Among that, commercially important juveniles formed 47.5 % of the finfish LVB by weight (56.1 % by number). An estimated 4,693.4 t (272.4 million by numbers) of Decapterus russelli juveniles, 1,395.7 t (144.9 million by numbers) of Saurida tumbil, 1,671.4 t (142.9 million by numbers) of Rastrelliger kanagurta and 338.3 t (90.1 million by numbers) of Nemipterus randalli were landed as LVB per year by multiday trawlers. From the results it is evident that marine fisheries will be in serious threat in successive years if the similar trend continues. The study strongly advocates LVB management through adoption of Juvenile Fish Excluder-Shrimp Sorting Device (JFE-SSD) and reduced effort in critical fishing grounds would bring down the damages to the marine ecosystems
Small Quadrupole Deformation for the Dipole Bands in 112In
High spin states in In were investigated using Mo(O,
p3n) reaction at 80 MeV. The excited level have been observed up to 5.6 MeV
excitation energy and spin 20 with the level scheme showing three
dipole bands. The polarization and lifetime measurements were carried out for
the dipole bands. Tilted axis cranking model calculations were performed for
different quasi-particle configurations of this doubly odd nucleus. Comparison
of the calculations of the model with the B(M1) transition strengths of the
positive and negative parity bands firmly established their configurations.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, 2 table
