    Awareness regarding emergency contraception among married women attending urban health centre, Berhampur, Odisha, India

    Background: In India unplanned pregnancy and illegal abortions still remains a problem. Unintended early pregnancy and frequent childbearing contribute to high pregnancy related morbidity and mortality which can be prevented by use of suitable contraceptives. In circumstances where women are unable to exercise sexual and reproductive decision making, introduction of emergency contraceptive pills may provide important back up option to enable women to control their fertility.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between August- October 2016 among 215 married women of reproductive age group attending the Urban Health Center, Berhampur, to study the awareness about most common methods of contraception, decision-making regarding contraceptive and knowledge and practice of emergency contraceptive pills.Results: This study concludes that most commonly used method was Oral contraceptive pills (28.3%) and major source of information regarding different methods of contraception were through friends and relatives (44.6%). Awareness about emergency contraception mostly came through television. Of those aware of ECPs (14.4%) only 16.1% had used it in their lifetime.Conclusions: Although there is awareness about contraceptives methods, knowledge and practice of emergency contraception is low

    Undoped cylindrical gate all around (GAA) MOSFET is a radical invention and a potential candidate to replace conventional MOSFET, as it introduces new direction for transistor scaling. In this work, the sensitivity of process parameters like channel length (Lg), channel thickness (tSi), and gate work function (φM) on various performance metrics of an undoped cylindrical GAA to nanowire MOSFET are systematically analyzed. The electrical characteristics such as on current (Ion), subthreshold leakage current (Ioff), threshold voltage (Vth) and similarly analog/RF performances like transconductance (gm), total gate capacitance (Cgg), and cut-off frequency (fT) are evaluated and studied with the variation of device design parameters. The discussion give direction towards low standby operating power (LSTP) devices as improvement in Ioff is approaching 90% in nanowire MOSFET. All the device performances of undoped GAA MOSFET are investigated through Sentaurus device simulator from Synopsis Inc

    Understanding the need for developing a structured competency-based curriculum for health policy and programs among community medicine postgraduates: A grounded theory approach

    Introduction: Many plans and policy changes about health outcomes have evolved, but none of them have ever given a definite shape to the postgraduate (PG) curriculum so as to make it more intensive and integrative, which needs to be so structured and tailored that it is more patient, community centric, and less knowledge based. Objectives: The objective of this study was to identify the gap in existing curriculum in learning of health policy and program among PGs of community medicine and recommend a structured model for the same. Materials and Methods: A qualitative study (grounded theory approach) with all PGs of community medicine in one teaching institute in South India (8 PG students) was taken up. Results: PGs felt that they never had any day-to-day update. They wanted to understand the working pattern and ground reality of policy and program which was unavailable to them. People who came to postgraduation after being medical officers felt that the monitoring and evaluation done by inexperienced MD Community Medicine students was never accepted by state public health because they did not understand the implementation problems and so could not rightly critically evaluate the programmatic challenges. Conclusion: With the shift in medical education patterns and expectations of residents, it becomes important to justify the need of developing a structured based curriculum, more so for policy and programs, which will make them capable enough by polishing their managerial and financial skill set. The evaluation technique should focus more on practical aspects on field instead of their theory examination

    Unravelling geospatial distribution and genetic diversity of greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) from Himalayan Region

    Abstract The Greenhouse whitefly (GWF), Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is a destructive pest that affects protected cultivation worldwide. The Indian Himalayan region is particularly vulnerable to GWF introduction, invasion, and spread due to the expansion of protected cultivation and climate change. In this study, we collected 32 naturally occurring GWF populations, mainly from the Uttarakhand state in the Indian Himalayan region, to investigate the distribution pattern and genetic diversity of T. vaporariorum. Our sampling was representative of the region's vegetation diversity and geographical location, and we collected samples from multiple sites within each locality to account for local variations. The mtCOI gene was used to accurately detect and identify GWF and to sequence haplotypes prevalent in the Uttarakhand state. The maximum likelihood method used for phylogenetic studies revealed that all 32 whitefly samples in this study belonged to T. vaporariorum and were prevalent in all the collected localities. Our population genetic study using mtCOI showed variation within T. vaporariorum populations, with 20 distinct haplotypes present. Notably, haplotype 2 (H2) was the most dominant haplotype among the sampled populations. These results provide fundamental knowledge for understanding the geographical distribution and ecology of T. vaporariorum in the Uttarakhand state of the Indian Himalayan region. The discovery of geospatial and genetic diversity of GWF in the Himalayan region underscores the importance of pest alertness, research prioritization, and the development of sustainable management strategies to protect crops

    Feasibility of measuring superior mesenteric artery blood flow during cardiac surgery under hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass using transesophageal echocardiography: An observational study

    Background: Abdominal complications being rare but results in high mortality, commonly due to splanchnic organ hypoperfusion during the perioperative period of cardiac surgery. There are no feasible methods to monitor intraoperative superior mesenteric artery blood flow (SMABF). Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and to measure SMABF using transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) during cardiac surgery under hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Methodology: Thirty-five patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery under CPB were enrolled. Heart rate, mean arterial pressure (MAP), cardiac output (CO), SMABF, superior mesenteric artery (SMA) diameter, superior mesentric artery blood flow over cardiac output (SMA/CO) ratio and arterial blood lactates were recorded at three time intervals. T0: before sternotomy, T1: 30 min after initiation of CPB and T2: after sternal closure. Results: SMA was demonstrated in 32 patients. SMABF, SMA diameter, SMA/CO, MAP and CO-decreased significantly (P 0.05) between T0 and T2. Lactates increased progressively from T0 to T2. Conclusion: Study shows that there is decrease in SMABF during CPB and returns to baseline after CPB. Hence, it is feasible to measure SMABF using TEE in patients undergoing cardiac surgery under hypothermic CPB. TEE can be a promising tool in detecting and preventing splanchnic hypoperfusion during perioperative period
