Polarized Light from the Transportation of a Matter-Antimatter Beam in a Plasma
A relativistic electron-positron beam propagating through a magnetized electron-ion plasma is shown to generate both circularly and linearly polarized synchrotron radiation. The degrees of circular and linear polarizations depend both on the density ratio of pair beam to background plasma and initial magnetization, and a maximum degree of circular polarization is found to occur for a tenuous pair beam. We demonstrate that the generation of circularly polarized radiation is intrinsically linked to asymmetric energy dissipation of the pair beam during the filamentation instability dynamics in the electron-ion plasma. These results can help in understanding the recent observations of circularly polarized radiation from gamma-ray-bursts
Density excitations of a harmonically trapped ideal gas
The dynamic structure factor of a harmonically trapped Bose gas has been
calculated well above the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature by treating
the gas cloud as a canonical ensemble of noninteracting classical particles.
The static structure factor is found to vanish as wavenumber squared in the
long-wavelength limit. We also incorporate a relaxation mechanism
phenomenologically by including a stochastic friction force to study the
dynamic structure factor. A significant temperature dependence of the
density-fluctuation spectra is found. The Debye-Waller factor has been
calculated for the trapped thermal cloud as function of wavenumber and of
particle number. A substantial difference is found between clouds of small and
large particle number
Anomalous temperature-induced volume contraction in GeTe
The recent surge of interest in phase change materials GeTe,
GeSbTe, and related compounds motivated us to revisit the
structural phase transition in GeTe in more details than was done before.
Rhombohedral-to-cubic ferroelectric phase transition in GeTe has been studied
by high resolution neutron powder diffraction on a spallation neutron source.
We determined the temperature dependence of the structural parameters in a wide
temperature range extending from 309 to 973 K. Results of our studies clearly
show an anomalous volume contraction of 0.6\% at the phase transition from the
rhombohedral to cubic phase. In order to better understand the phase transition
and the associated anomalous volume decrease in GeTe we have performed phonon
calculations based on the density functional theory. Results of the present
investigations are also discussed with respect to the experimental data
obtained for single crystals of GeTe
