    The ship recycling conundrum: an econometric analysis of market dynamics and industry trends

    Ship recycling has received considerable attention during the last two decades for a variety of reasons and the industry is currently under a thorough scrutiny with the likelihood of the adoption of a new multilateral convention under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This study applies econometric modeling to a unique dataset to provide a holistic insight into the dynamics of the ship recycling market. The dataset contains information on 51,112 ships over 100 gt and includes 748,621 events over a period of 29 years. The binary logistic regression models used provide insights for a shipping-related sector that has received scant scholarly attention in the past. It is expected that these contributions will provide empirical support for the ongoing IMO discussions in this important field.

    Feminism, Budgeting and Gender Justice

    The Fourth Conference on Women at Beijing (1995) underlined the importance of gender mainstreaming; spurring India to provide for separate Gender Budgeting in 2005-06. The Constitution tries to make fine balance between right to equality and positive discrimination for promoting gender justice in India. Yet high levels of Gender Inequality Index (GII), coexist with high Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, after India opted for economic liberalization in the 1990s. This paper brings out these trends and how the Supreme Court, as the watchdog of fundamental rights, has played a stellar role in ensuring gender justice. The paper does a trend analysis of gender budgeting and the inept implementation of flagship programmes like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Nirbhaya, due to the lack of coordinated approach. Making comparison with developed and Emerging Market Economies (EME), the paper underscores the importance of earmarking handsome allocation to education and health care. The issue of gender justice is not merely an issue of adequate allocation or effective judicial redressal, but embraces a larger concern viz. the “culture of silence” that pervades our patriarchal society.     Solar Cell Powering with Integrated Global Positioning System for SWARM Robot System

    A new concept of a Solar Cell powering with integrated Global Positioning System (GPS) for SWARM (Small World Autonomous Robots for Micro-manipulation) is proposed. The main idea is to use a projector to transfer energy and to provide global positioning information to the robots that are equipped with photodiodes on their top. We project a white image showed a scavenged power of 100 to 200 watts normally tungsten bulbs commercially available in market. Based on the global positioning system, the projector sends regularly a sequence 17 images and the robots decodes them using two photodiodes in order to calculate its own position and orientation inside a defined arena.     Induced breeding of Cresent Perch, Terapon jarbua under controlled conditions

    822-824Crescent Perch, Terapon jarbua is an important candidate species for brackish water ornamental and food fishes. This fish inhabits brackish water of much of the tropical and sub-tropical Indo-Pacific region on sandy bottom including estuaries. During December 2014, a fully matured female with average egg diameter of 450 μ along with two oozing males were selected for induced spawning trials. Fishes were induced to spawn with Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, HCG hormone @300 IU/kg body weight and Luteinising Hormone Releasing Hormone analogue, LHRHa @ 75 µg/kg body weight; half the hormone dose was administered to male fishes. After 36 h of post-injection, all sets were spawned (fertilized egg mean size: 720 µ± 34.96 µ); the eggs were semi-buoyant in nature, Hatching was noticed after 16-18 h of incubation period. Average size of hatchlings was 2.04 mm ± 0.05 with the yolk sac length of 75 µ and presence of a single oil globule. A total of 3 lakh newly hatched larvae from four sets were collected and used for standardization of nursery rearing protocol. The larvae were reared for 60 days feeding with rotifers and artemia nauplii which then reached the fry size of 30 mm with 20% of survival rate

    Influence of Oxidation on Fracture Toughness of Carbon-Carbon Composites for High-Temperature Applications

    Carbon-Carbon Composites (C-CC), used as composites for their remarkable qualities in the space industry as well as in many other industry sectors. C-CC has proven to be the most efficient material in extreme temperature situations. One of the best high-temperature materials with good thermal quality, such as high-temperature stability, outstanding thermal conductivity and low-temperature expansion coefficients. In aircraft, railways, trucks and even race vehicles, C-CC brake disks are in high demand. In comparison to the favorable thermal and mechanical qualities of C-CC, their great sensitivity to oxidation in an oxidizing environment at temperatures even around 400°C is a major restriction with these composites. In particular, a study of the C-CC oxidation mechanism helps to create protective measures for these composites. The present experimental study explores the influence of oxidation in static air on the fracture toughness of C-CC. At a temperature of around 400°C to 700°C in an increase of 100°C, an oxidation evaluation of the material was carried out in static air. Results show a decrease in fracture toughness to increase in the temperature. We can observe that C-CC fracture toughness is severely affected by oxidation. The variation began at 400°C from 6% and was anticipated at 700°C up to 45%

    AbstractIn this paper, equalization algorithms applying soft–decision feedback, designed for quaternary phase–shift keying (QPSK) and 8PSK (phase–shift keying) transmission are introduced. The method employed is a minimum mean– squared error (MMSE) in which each iteration is done in order to refine the data estimates. The rule for generating soft decisions is adapted continuously to the current state of the algorithm. We show that standard Decision Feedback Equalization (DFE-Non linear Equaliser) methods are clearly outperformed the minimum mean–squared error (MMSE linear Equaliser). We use the MATLAB to show that the MMSE-DFE provide better performance with the increasing value of SNR in scattering environment

    A study on innovativeness and regulating conflicts between the fishers and farmers in the Balua wetland

    Wetlands store ground and surface water even when the rainfall is erratic. However, the rising demand for water and land to sustain the ever increasing population has manifested in many kinds of conflicts in wetlands. In the study area, Balua Chaur (wetland) in Bihar state of India, 16 conflicts emerged when the flooded lands offarmers was accessed by the fishers to fish. Such conflicts had further marginalized the already indigent fishers. Factor analysis, to reduce the socioeconomic and psychological variables of the fishers that were associated with innovativeness and further analysis of ANOVA and regression was used. In case of fishers, two major groups of interrelated variables that accounted for 60.6 % of the total variance were identified through this method. Factor 1 accounted for 34.8 % of the total variance that included innovativeness, income, education, mass media exposure, extension contact, livestock ownership, land ownership, mobile use collaborating and competing style of conflict management and named as innovative factors. The ANOVA table and stepwise multiple regression model exhibited that the nuclear family type and livestock have significant impact on the innovativeness of fishers with R2 value 0.255. In this paper, peace and prosperity model based upon the analysis of primary information collected from the fishers, farmers and key informants is proposed to foster innovativeness to enhance the productivity of wetland and resolve conflict to mobilize the resources in efficient and judicial manner
