    Associated HI absorption in the z=3.4 radio galaxy B2 0902+343 observed with the GMRT

    We have made observations of the associated HI absorption of a high redshift radio galaxy 0902+34 at z=3.395 with the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope in the 323±1323\pm1 MHz band. We find a narrow absorption line with a flux density of 11.5 mJy at a redshift of 3.397 consistent with that observed by Uson et al. (1991), Briggs et al. (1993) and de Bruyn (1996).A weak broad absorption feature reported by de Bruyn (1996) has not been detected in our observations. We also place an upper limit of 4 mJy (2 σ\sigma) on emission line strength at the position where Uson et al. (1991) claimed to have found a narrow emission line.Comment: To appear in Journal of Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Fatigue of notched fiber composite laminates. Part 2: Analytical and experimental evaluation

    The analytical/experimental correlation study was performed to develop an understanding of the behavior of notched Boron/epoxy laminates subjected to tension/tension fatigue loading. It is postulated that the fatigue induced property changes (stiffness as well as strength) of the laminate can be obtained from the lamina fatigue properties. To that end, the Boron/epoxy lamina static and fatigue data (lifetime, residual stiffness and strength) were obtained initially. The longitudinal and transverse tension data were determined from the (0) and (90) laminate tests while the in-plane shear data were obtained from the (+ or - 45) sub s laminates. The static tests obtained the notched strength and mode of failure while the fatigue tests determined lifetime, damage propagation and residual strength. The failure in static tension occurred in a transverse crack propagation mode

    Testing of powders for sensitivity to air effect segregation

    A loss of blend homogeneity through handling operations can have a major influence on the mechanical properties of sintered products. Plant optimisation to minimise the potential for segregation of blends can be undertaken through an audit of handling operations combined with an evaluation of the materials that are handled through the process. The correct identification of the mechanism of segregation is essential to support strategies to implement the most efficient and cost-effective counter measures. In support of this type of industrial activity, a piece of test apparatus has recently been developed to provide measurements of segregation potential for powders (metal and mineral) that are prone to loss of homogeneity (by composition or particle size) when subjected to counter-directional air displacements through equipment. The test equipment is described and examples given of its output in industrial application

    Metallicity Evolution of Damped Lyman-Alpha Galaxies

    We have reanalyzed the existing data on Zinc abundances in damped Ly-alpha (DLA) absorbers to investigate whether their mean metallicity evolves with time. Most models of cosmic chemical evolution predict that the mass- weighted mean interstellar metallicity of galaxies should rise with time from a low value ~ 1/30 solar at z ~ 3 to a nearly solar value at z ~ 0. However, several previous analyses have suggested that there is little or no evolution in the global metallicity of DLAs. We have used a variety of statistical techniques to quantify the global metallicity-redshift relation and its uncertainties, taking into account both measurement and sampling errors. Three new features of our analysis are: (a) an unbinned N(H I)-weighted nonlinear chi-square fit to an exponential relation; (b) survival analysis to treat the large number of limits in the existing data; and (c) a comparison of the data with several models of cosmic chemical evolution based on an unbinned N(H I)-weighted chi-square. We find that a wider range of evolutionary rates is allowed by the present data than claimed in previous studies. The slope of the exponential fit to the N(H I)-weighted mean Zn metallicity vs. redshift relation is -0.20 plus minus 0.11 counting limits as detections and -0.27 plus minus 0.12 counting limits as zeros. Similar results are also obtained if the data are binned in redshift, and if survival analysis is used. These slopes are marginally consistent with no evolution, but are also consistent with the rates predicted by several models of cosmic chemical evolution. Finally, we outline some future measurements necessary to improve the statistics of the global metallicity-redshift relation.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
