Farming Systems Diversification in North Konkan Region of Maharashtra — An Economic Analysis

    Get PDF
The location-specific existing farming systems have been studied for their profitability and extent of diversification in the North Konkan region of Maharashtra. The study is based on the primary data collected from 360 farmers, as well as secondary data on agro-climatic parameters. The study area has been delineated into different clusters/sub- regions using hierarchical agglomerative method. The farming in the North Konkan region has been found highly varied in nature. The enterprises being followed and farm situations are of different nature across different clusters. The farm economy has also depicted a wide variation as per-farm income has been found to range from ` 1135 to ` 218015 across different farming systems. The most profitable farming systems in study area are: (i) Paddy + Irrigated plantation + Betelvines (B:C ratio, 2.02), (ii) Paddy + Pulses + Dairying + Poultry (B: C ratio, 1.74), (iii) Paddy + Vegetables + Dairying ( B:C ratio,1.62), (iv) Paddy + Irrigated plantations + Rainfed plantation + Dairying (B: C ratio,1.57), (v) Irrigated plantations + Dairying (B:C ratio,1.56), and (vi) Paddy + Irrigated plantations + Flowers (B:C ratio,1.42). The diversification has shown a positive co-relation with profitability which underlines the importance of combination of enterprises.Farming systems, Agricultural diversification, North Konkan region, Farm economy, SPSS, Crop diversification index, Agricultural and Food Policy, Q12, Q15,

High-energy electron induced gain degradation in bipolar junction transistors

    Get PDF
This paper describes the effect of 8 MeV electron beam on the forward current gain of space borne commercial indigenous bipolar junction transistors 2N2219A (npn), 2N3019 (npn) and 2N2905A (pnp). The devices are exposed to 8 MeV electron in the biased condition. The collector characteristics and Gummel plots are obtained as a function of accumulated dose. An excess base current model as well as Messenger-Spratt equation have been used to account for the observed gain degradation. The results indicate that 8 MeV electrons of high dose rate induce gain degradation by increasing the base current as well as decrease in collector current. The current gain degradation appears to be predominantly due to displacement damage in the bulk of the transistor. Off-line measurements of the hFE of the irradiated transistors indicate that the displacement induced defect and recombination centers do not anneal even at 150 °C. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Acute toxicity of metasystox to wedge clam, Donax cuneatus from west coast

96h acute toxicity tests were performed using commercial grade metasystox on the marine wedge clam, Donax cuneatus during summer 1985. The behaviour and mortality rates were recorded periodically. Most of the dams responded in opening the shell valves and extending the siphons quicker in low test concentrations (0.004-0.0052 p.p.m) but this was slow and late in high concentrations (0.0056-0.008 p.p.m). Mortality began to occur in 0.008 p.p.m. from 12 h, whereas, in 0.0052 p.p.m. from 60 h onwards. The observed LC sub(0) value was 0.004 p.p.m. and LC sub(50) 0.0064 p.p.m. The regression equation established was Y = 79.0891 + 33.4523 X. The rate of oxygen concentration increased at LC sub(0) and LC sub(50) values compared to control indicating the disturbed physiological adjustment. The results are correlated with physico-chemical parameters of seawater and discussed in the light of pesticide toxicity to the dam

DLTS study of deep level defects in Li-ion irradiated bipolar junction transistor

    Get PDF
Commercial npn transistor (2N 2219A) irradiated with 50 MeV Li3+-ions with fluences ranging from 3.1 × 1013 ions cm−2 to 12.5 × 1013 ions cm−2, is studied for radiation induced gain degradation and minority carrier trap levels or recombination centers. The properties such as activation energy, trap concentration and capture cross section of induced deep levels are studied by deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) technique. Minority carrier trap levels with energies ranging from 0.237 eV to 0.591 eV were observed in the base–collector junction of the transistor. In situ I–V measurements were made to study the gain degradation as a function of ion fluence. Ion induced energy levels result in increase in the base current through Shockley Read Hall (SRH) or multi-phonon recombination and subsequent transistor gain degradation

Optical and near-IR observations of SN 1998bw

SN 1998bw, especially after the discovery of GRB 030329/SN 2003dh, seems to be the equivalent of the Rosetta stone for the SN/GRB connection. In this paper I review optical and near IR observations that have been carried out for this uncanny object, which has probably confirmed suspicions and ideas originally formulated in the early seventies of last century.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. Lognormal Properties of SGR 1806-20 and Implications for Other SGR Sources

The time interval between successive bursts from SGR 1806-20 and the intensity of these bursts are both consistent with lognormal distributions. Monte Carlo simulations of lognormal burst models with a range of distribution parameters have been investigated. The main conclusions are that while most sources like SGR 1806-20 should be detected in a time interval of 25 years, sources with means about 100 times longer have a probability of about 5\% of being detected in the same interval. A new breed of experiments that operate for long periods are required to search for sources with mean recurrence intervals much longer than SGR 1806-20.Comment: 4 pages, latex with seperate file containing 2 uuencoded, gzip'ed, tarred, .eps figures.
