    Electroweak vector boson production in joint resummation

    We study the application of the joint resummation to electroweak boson production at hadron colliders. The joint resummation formalism resums both threshold and transverse momentum corrections to the transverse momentum distribution at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy.     We apply QCD resummation techniques to study the transverse momentum distribution of Higgs bosons produced via gluon-gluon fusion at the LHC. In particular we focus on the joint resummation formalism which resums both threshold and transverse momentum corrections simultaneously.     Production of Scalar Higgs Bosons Associated with Z0Z^0 Boson at the CERN LHC in the MSSM

    We investigate the associated production of a scalar Higgs boson (h0h^0 or H0H^0) with Z0Z^0 boson in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), including the contributions from bbˉb\bar{b} annihilation at the tree level and gluon fusion via quark and squark loops. We quantitatively analyze the total cross sections in the mSUGRA scenario. For the production of h0h^0 associated with Z0Z^0, we find that in most of the parameter regions, the contributions from initial bbˉb\bar{b} and gggg are at a level of one percent of the total cross section and therefore almost insignificant. For the production of H0H^0 associated with Z0Z^0, the contributions from bbˉb\bar{b} channel can be much larger than those from light quark initial states. Especially for large tan⁥ÎČ\tan\beta, the increment can reach about one order of magnitude. Thus, when considering the associated production of H0H^0 and Z0Z^0 at the LHC, the contributions from bbˉb\bar{b} annihilation should be taken into account seriously.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, RevTeX4; one reference added, minor changes, conclusion unchanged; Journal-ref adde

    Joint resummation in electroweak boson production

    We present a phenomenological application of the joint resummation formalism to electroweak annihilation processes at measured boson momentum Q_T. This formalism simultaneously resums at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy large threshold and recoil corrections to partonic scattering. We invert the impact parameter transform using a previously described analytic continuation procedure. This leads to a well-defined, resummed perturbative cross section for all nonzero Q_T, which can be compared to resummation carried out directly in Q_T space. From the structure of the resummed expressions, we also determine the form of nonperturbative corrections to the cross section and implement these into our analysis. We obtain a good description of the transverse momentum distribution of Z bosons produced at the Tevatron collider.Comment: 27 pages, LaTeX, 8 figures as eps files.     This Report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum ChromoDynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop ``Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 21 May - 1 June 2001. The account of uncertainties in Parton Distribution Functions is reviewed. Progresses in the description of multiparton final states at Next-to-Leading Order and the extension of calculations for precision QCD observables beyond this order are summarized. Various issues concerning the relevance of resummation for observables at TeV colliders is examined. Improvements to algorithms of jet reconstruction are discussed and predictions for diphoton and photon pi-zero production at the LHC are made for kinematic variables of interest regarding searches for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons. Finally, several improvements implemented in Monte-Carlo event generators are documented

    Hard Interactions of Quarks and Gluons: a Primer for LHC Physics

    In this review article, we develop the perturbative framework for the calculation of hard scattering processes. We undertake to provide both a reasonably rigorous development of the formalism of hard scattering of quarks and gluons as well as an intuitive understanding of the physics behind the scattering. We emphasize the importance of logarithmic corrections as well as power counting of the strong coupling constant in order to understand the behavior of hard scattering processes. We include "rules of thumb" as well as "official recommendations", and where possible seek to dispel some myths. Experiences that have been gained at the Fermilab Tevatron are recounted and, where appropriate, extrapolated to the LHC.Comment: 118 pages, 107 figures; to be published in Reports on Progress in Physic
