Use of electrostatic gridded lenses in the laser ion source at CERN
The GEL LEBT provides high efficiency beam transport and matching to the RFQ acceptance in the 4-dimensional phase space. The rms emittance growth is relatively small even for 60 kV extraction voltage. The number of particles occupying the 4-D RFQ acceptance strongly depends from the beam emittance at the entrance of the GEL LEBT. In most realistic case with the input emittance equal to the measured one, which is 320 p×mm×mrad (4×rms emittance) the number of particles inside the 4-D space with the projection emittance of 200 p×mm×mrad is 38% at the entrance and 35% at the output of GEL LEBT, which means that LEBT does not practically destroy beam emittance. The experimental value of the yield to the double aperture is 35% and confirms the expected performance of the GEL LEBT
Towards device-size atomistic models of amorphous silicon
The atomic structure of amorphous materials is believed to be well described
by the continuous random network model. We present an algorithm for the
generation of large, high-quality continuous random networks. The algorithm is
a variation of the "sillium" approach introduced by Wooten, Winer, and Weaire.
By employing local relaxation techniques, local atomic rearrangements can be
tried that scale almost independently of system size. This scaling property of
the algorithm paves the way for the generation of realistic device-size atomic
networks.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Professionalism, Golf Coaching and a Master of Science Degree: A commentary
As a point of reference I congratulate Simon Jenkins on tackling the issue of professionalism in coaching. As he points out coaching is not a profession, but this does not mean that coaching would not benefit from going through a professionalization process. As things stand I find that the stimulus article unpacks some critically important issues of professionalism, broadly within the context of golf coaching. However, I am not sure enough is made of understanding what professional (golf) coaching actually is nor how the development of a professional golf coach can be facilitated by a Master of Science Degree (M.Sc.). I will focus my commentary on these two issues
Electroless deposition of platinum on titanium substrates
The use of an electroless platinum bath based on chloroplatinic acid and hydrazine for depositing adherent and uniform layers on titanium panels is demonstrated. The conditions were optimised for a new set of additives. The effect of concentrations of platinum metal in the bath on thickness of the deposit was studied. The deposition rates on titanium and gold-plated titanium are evaluated. Dispersed platinum coatings on titanium powder were successfully obtained

Identification of nnderlying assumptions is an integral part of research: An example from motor control
Research is inherently subjective. It is conducted within a theoretical and methodological framework, the validity of which depends on underlying assumptions about the nature of reality and knowledge. The interpretation of one's own data, and the evaluation of the data interpretation of others, requires assessment of these underlying philosophical assumptions. We contend that while examination of philosophical assumptions is demonstrably an integral part of research, it is one which has largely been neglected in experimental psychology because researchers have rarely explicitly identified their ontological and epistemological assumptions. A contemporary debate in experimental psychology, that between representational and non-representational approaches to understanding the control of movement, is discussed to illustrate the influence such ontological and epistemological assumptions have upon methodological choices and upon the development and evaluation of theory
