    Assessing Semantic Similarities among Geospatial Feature Class Definitions

    The assessment of semantic similarity among objects is a basic requirement for semantic interoperability. This paper presents an innovative approach to semantic similarity assessment by combining the advantages of two different strategies: featurematching process and semantic distance calculation. The model involves a knowledge base of spatial concepts that consists of semantic relations (is-a and part-whole) and distinguishing features (functions, parts, and attributes). By taking into consideration cognitive properties of similarity assessments, this model expects to represent a cognitively plausible and computationally achievable method for measuring the degree of interoperability

    Tweed in Martensites: A Potential New Spin Glass

    We've been studying the ``tweed'' precursors above the martensitic transition in shape--memory alloys. These characteristic cross--hatched modulations occur for hundreds of degrees above the first--order shape--changing transition. Our two--dimensional model for this transition, in the limit of infinite elastic anisotropy, can be mapped onto a spin--glass Hamiltonian in a random field. We suggest that the tweed precursors are a direct analogy of the spin--glass phase. The tweed is intermediate between the high--temperature cubic phase and the low--temperature martensitic phase in the same way as the spin--glass phase can be intermediate between ferromagnet and antiferromagnet.Comment: 18 pages and four figures (included

    Disorder-Driven Pretransitional Tweed in Martensitic Transformations

    Defying the conventional wisdom regarding first--order transitions, {\it solid--solid displacive transformations} are often accompanied by pronounced pretransitional phenomena. Generally, these phenomena are indicative of some mesoscopic lattice deformation that ``anticipates'' the upcoming phase transition. Among these precursive effects is the observation of the so-called ``tweed'' pattern in transmission electron microscopy in a wide variety of materials. We have investigated the tweed deformation in a two dimensional model system, and found that it arises because the compositional disorder intrinsic to any alloy conspires with the natural geometric constraints of the lattice to produce a frustrated, glassy phase. The predicted phase diagram and glassy behavior have been verified by numerical simulations, and diffraction patterns of simulated systems are found to compare well with experimental data. Analytically comparing to alternative models of strain-disorder coupling, we show that the present model best accounts for experimental observations.Comment: 43 pages in TeX, plus figures.     Perception of isolated chords: Examining frequency of occurrence, instrumental timbre, acoustic descriptors and musical training

    This study investigated the perception of isolated chords using a combination of experimental manipulation and exploratory analysis. Twelve types of chord (five triads and seven tetrads) were presented in two instrumental timbres (piano and organ) to listeners who rated the chords for consonance, pleasantness, stability and relaxation. Listener ratings varied by chord, by timbre, and according to musical expertise, and revealed that musicians distinguished consonance from the other variables in a way that other listeners did not. To further explain the data, a principal component analysis and linear regression examined three potential predictors of the listener ratings. First, each chord’s frequency of occurrence was obtained by counting its appearances in selected works of music. Second, listeners rated their familiarity with the instrumental timbre in which the chord was played. Third, chords were described using a set of acoustic features derived using the Timbre Toolbox and MIR Toolbox. Results of the study indicated that listeners’ ratings of both consonance and stability were influenced by the degree of musical training and knowledge of tonal hierarchy.
