Why our teaching in higher computing education should address sustainability
This lightning talk argues for the following statement: "No major subject
in computing education should be taught without linking it to sustainability
Development of a Toolbox on Sustainable ICT across Industry and Academia: The goforIT project
ICT plays an important role in assuring both environmental, economic, individual, technical and social sustainability. While sustainability is commonly understood at the general level, it was realized at a joint academia-industry panel at the Norwegian ICT conference in November 2019 that ICT-professionals did not necessarily know how they work to develop sustainable solutions. This also applied at the time to academia: Lecturers and those responsible for study programs did not know what should be taught in the different subjects. On this background goforIT (Gønn omstilling for IT-bransjen) was established in February 2020 by a small group of companies and universities. The development and use of the Sustainability Competence Toolkit is one of the major undertakings of goforIT and is expected to be important both for practice and academia. Developing the toolkit is guided by ADR - action design research and service design methodology. , The main results presented in this paper is results from service design within this frame and the current results in a sustainability toolbox. In future work we will investigate how this toolbox is developed through use, supporting the coordinated knowledge development in the area of sustainable ICT in academia and industry.publishedVersio

Using mobile devices and apps to support reflective learning about older people with dementia
There has been little research to develop computing technologies to support the care of people with dementia, in spite of the growing challenges that the condition poses for society. To design such technologies, an existing model of computer-support reflective learning was instantiated with findings from a pre-design study in one residential home. The result was a mobile device running an adapted enterprise social media app to support person-centred care. Evaluations of the device and app in two residential homes revealed that use of the app both motivated and increased different styles of care note recording, but little reflective learning was identified or reported. The results suggest the need for more comprehensive and flexible computer-based support for reflective learning about residents in their care – and new designs of this more comprehensive support are also introduced
Guest lectures in IT education - Recommendations based on an empirical study
Guest lectures are often a welcome and inspiring event in a course, potentially demonstrating the real-life relevance of the syllabus. It can however be challenging to successfully incorporate a guest lecture. To investigate such challenges, we conducted a study among faculty and students in a university department offering bachelor and master programs in IT. The results shed light on the importance of guest lectures, which courses are fit for guest lectures, the role of personal networks and factors that may prevent guest lectures from being arranged successfully. From this we propose a set of issues that should be addressed by a university department to provide support for the inclusion of guest lecturers in courses and study programs. As a pointer towards further work, we briefly address what support tools might be provided
Considering Self-Efficacy in Reflection. Proceedings of ARTEL 2016
There is a relationship between self-efficacy and the process of reflective learning. How they may influence each other can be explored by considering the steps in a reflective learning cycle. For each step, there are ways self-efficacy may be affected by how reflection is conducted, or may impact on how reflection should be conducted and supported. The paper outlines such connections, thus providing a starting point for further research on how to take self-efficacy into account when planning and designing for reflective learning and needed tool support for this
