    A computational procedure for automated flutter analysis

    A direct solution procedure for computing the flutter Mach number and the flutter frequency is applied to the aeroelastic analysis of propfans using a finite element structural model and an unsteady aerodynamic model based on a three-dimensional subsonic compressible lifting surface theory. An approximation to the Jacobian matrix that improves the efficiency of the iterative process is presented. The Jacobian matrix is indirectly approximated from approximate derivatives of the flutter matrix. Examples are used to illustrate the convergence properties. The direct solution procedure facilitates the automated flutter analysis in addition to contributing to the efficient use of computer time as well as the analyst's time

    Asymptotic analysis and spectrum of three anyons

    The spectrum of anyons confined in harmonic oscillator potential shows both linear and nonlinear dependence on the statistical parameter. While the existence of exact linear solutions have been shown analytically, the nonlinear dependence has been arrived at by numerical and/or perturbative methods. We develop a method which shows the possibility of nonlinearly interpolating spectrum.     A study of tropical tropopause using MST radar

    International audienceUsing the MST radar data of vertical wind, the characteristics of the tropical tropopause, following four different definitions, depending on 1) temperature lapse rate, 2) cold point, 3) convective outflow and 4) potential temperature lapse rate minimum, are studied. From the vertical wind data of the radar, the altitude profiles of temperature and horizontal divergence are derived, from which the tropopause levels corresponding to i) the lapse rate ii) cold point iii) convective outflow level and iv) potential temperature lapse rate minimum are determined. The convective outflow level and hence the convective tropopause altitude is determined, for the first time using the MST radar data. The tropopause altitudes and temperatures obtained following the four definitions are compared on a day-to-day basis for the summer and winter seasons. Winter and summer differences in the tropopause altitude and temperature are also studied. Keywords.     A semianalytical technique for sensitivity analysis of unsteady aerodynamic computations

    A semianalytical approach is developed for the sensitivity analysis of linear unsteady aerodynamic loads. The semianalytical approach is easier to implement than the analytical approach. It is also computationally less expensive than the finite difference approach when used with panel methods, which require a large number of panels. The semianalytical approach is applied to an isolated airfoil in a 2-D flow and rotating propfan blades in 3-D flow. Sensitivity coefficients with respect to non-shape-dependent variables are shown for some cases. It is expected that the semianalytical approach will be useful in aeroelastic design procedures particularly when mistuning is present, and that it is potentially useful for shape sensitivity analysis of linear unsteady aerodynamics

    CHARACTERIZATION OF ALPHA-AMYLASE FROM THE SEEDS OF Mucuna pruriens

    Amylases are hydrolytic enzymes which are widely distributed in nature, animals, plants and microorganisms. Amylases are of great significance in present-day biotechnology. In present study, amylases are isolated from the soaked seeds of Mucuna pruriens under extreme acidic conditions. Conventional protein purification techniques such as salt fractionation, ion exchange chromatography on CM-cellulose and sephadex G-75 was employed for the purification of amylase from the seeds of Mucuna pruriens. The amylase activity was eluted in one peak. The specific activity and yield of the purified amylase was 6.25 and 29.99, respectively. Native PAGE, SDS-PAGE and gel electrofocussing were employed to establish homogeneity of the purified amylase. SDS-PAGE and gel-filtration chromatography on sephadex G-75 was used to determine the molecular weight of the purified amylase. The purified amylase was nearly homogenous and its molecular weight was found to be 78.4 kDa. The optimum pH and temperature of the purified amylase were 7.0 and 50oC, respectively. The isolectric pH of the purified amylase was 7.2 and the activity was linear up to 60 minutes

    Prevalence of thyroid dysfunction and its association with controlled and uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus in northern Andhra Pradesh population: a retrospective study

    Background: The two important endocrinopathies, diabetes mellitus and thyroid dysfunction are interrelated to each other where the correlation is poorly understood. The thyroid dysfunction is more frequent in diabetics than general population. The present study was aimed to know the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its association with controlled and uncontrolled T2DM.Methods: A retrospective study of 600 T2DM patients between 13-60 years of age with known thyroid status were included and the following parameters were examined: age, sex, body mass index (BMI), fasting blood sugar (FBS), HbA1C, free triiodothyronine (fT3), free tetraiodothyronine (fT4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).Results: The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in T2DM patients was found to be 26.5% whereas 9% in healthy controls. Significantly elevated levels of FBS, HbA1C and TSH were observed whereas the levels of fT3, fT4 were found to be low in patients when compared to controls. Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) in diabetics (both controlled and uncontrolled) was more prevalent (15%) than it was found in healthy controls (5%). Similarly, overt hypothyroidism was also found to be high in diabetic patients (6%) as compared to healthy controls (2%). Significant difference (p <0.05) in the levels of TSH was found between group I (Controlled T2DM) and II (uncontrolled T2DM patients), also between groups II and III (Controls). Group II patients were found to have significant low levels of fT3 as compared to other two groups (Group I and III) (p<0.005).Conclusions: As SCH is more frequent in T2DM diabetes mellitus and untreated SCH patients have higher rate of complications, periodical screening is advised for thyroid dysfunction to prevent micro vascular and cardiovascular complications

    Magnetic anomalies of offshore Krishna-Godavari basin, eastern continental margin of India

    The marine magnetic data acquired from offshore Krishna-Godavari (K-G) basin, eastern continental margin of India (ECMI), brought out a prominent NE-SW trending feature, which could be explained by a buried structural high formed by volcanic activity. The magnetic anomaly feature is also associated with a distinct negative gravity anomaly similar to the one associated with 85°E Ridge. The gravity low could be attributed to a flexure at the Moho boundary, which could in turn be filled with the volcanic material. Inversion of the magnetic and gravity anomalies was also carried out to establish the similarity of anomalies of the two geological features (structural high on the margin and the 85°E Ridge) and their interpretations. In both cases, the magnetic anomalies were caused dominantly by the magnetization contrast between the volcanic material and the surrounding oceanic crust, whereas the low gravity anomalies are by the flexures of the order of 3-4 km at Moho boundary beneath them. The analysis suggests that both structural high present in offshore Krishna-Godavari basin and the 85°E Ridge have been emplaced on relatively older oceanic crust by a common volcanic process, but at discrete times, and that several of the gravity lows in the Bay of Bengal can be attributed to flexures on the Moho, each created due to the load of volcanic material
