Photophysics of the electronic states S0 and S1 for the coplanar molecular structures of the α,ω-diphenylpolyenes DPH and DPO

Spectroscopy of the monoclinic and orthorhombic crystalline forms of all-trans-diphenylhexatriene (DPH) and all-trans-diphenyloctatetraene (DPO) show absorption and emission bands that do not generate the widely known Stokes shift of the polyene compounds, discovered by Hausser et al. in 1953 and repeatedly studied over the last 60 years. It can be concluded from our study that the crystallization system, whether in a monoclinic or orthorhombic system, does not significantly influence the photophysics of DPH and DPO in the crystal phas

Foundry Industry in Great Britain and some general trends of development

The British foundry industry produces more than 4 million tons of castings, bulk of which are of iron. The range and size of products manufactured are indeed wide and varied to meet the demands of a highly diversified market for both consumer and capital goods. Modern innovations like shell moulding, precision investment process, carbon dioxide process, the Shaw process and the like have made sufficient impact for the production of castings in iron, steel, non-ferrous and special alloy steels. Equal importance is also given to scientific management and in this field considerable progress has been made in the post war period in perfecting market research, work study and work measurement, vocational training, job evaluation and standard costing to meet the demands of a growing competitive market. This investigation was taken up at the instance of the Tata Locomotive & Engineering Company, Tatanagar, to determine the suitability of Rajmahal sand for use in moulds and cores in their steel foundries. The sand sample and necessary raw materials for this investigation were supplied by the above firm. As received, the sand contained about 13% of salt and clay grade matter. It was, therefore, deslimed in the Ore-Dressing division of the National Metallurgical Laboratory, prior to investigation of its moulding characteristics

This investigation was undertaken at the instance of the Tata Engineering & Locomotive Co.Ltd., Tatanagar, using a sample of bentonite supplied by them and described as K (l) Bentonite. The object was to determine (i) the optimum percentage additions of the Bentonite required for bonding of washed Rajmahal sand to obtain the requisite range of physical properties use in moulds and (ii) optimum working moisture range in such synthetic sand mixtures for green sand moulding in the steel foundry

Not AvailableTrawling is one of the most important fishing methods in India. In response to rising demand for seafood in the worldwide markets, fishermen working in the mechanized trawl fishing sector have been forced to venture into deeper waters in search of new fishing grounds and better catch. There have been significant changes in trawl fishery since its introduction and changes in fleet size and overall capacity of trawlers have increased several times over the past three decades, particularly along southwest coast. In this paper, an attempt has been made to document major shift in length overall (LOA), installed engine power of the trawlers in Cochin, central Kerala. This study reveals that trawler with LOA more than 40m having engine up to 591 hp were recently introduced into the fleet. Similarly, trawls with head rope length ranging from 45.0-122m were seen in operation. The mesh size of the wings in fish and cephalopod trawls showed a clear increasing trend. Square mesh codend were not found to be in use, in spite of the concerted effort of different agencies. This study point out the need for strict implementation of regulations with regard to vessel size, engine power, size of the trawl net, codend type and mesh size. Periodic inspection of fishing units to ensure responsible fishing is highly essential to protect coastal fishery resources in India. Not Availabl
