Directing Modernist Spirituality: Evelyn Underhill, the Subliminal Consciousness and Spiritual Direction

Outlining an alternative trajectory for modernist spirituality to that traced in Pericles Lewis’s 'Religious Experience and the Modernist Novel' (2010), I argue that modernist religious thought, far from playing heir to the long march of secularization, was in fact conditioned by a late-nineteenth-century cultural crisis that issued in a range of religious experiments and renewals, one of which was Evelyn Underhill’s 'Mysticism: A Study in the Nature and Development of Man’s Spiritual Consciousness' (1911), a text that not only brought together mystical traditions and scientific discoveries, but also used this interdisciplinary remit to counter existing secularizing perspectives. An important dimension of Underhill’s work was its collaborative nature; it offers, I argue, not access to rarefied enlightenment, but rather a bold attempt to navigate a treacherous religious landscape

A Theoretical Analysis of Zero Field Splitting of Mn 2+

    No full text
The superposition model has been used to investigate the substitution of Mn2+Mn^{2+} in ammonium oxalate monohydrate. The zero field splitting parameters D and E calculated by the superposition model are compared with the experimental values DexpD_{exp} and EexpE_{exp}, respectively, for Mn2+Mn^{2+} obtained by electron paramagnetic resonance. Both the zero field splitting parameters D and E calculated theoretically are in good agreement with the experimental values DexpD_{exp} and EexpE_{exp}. The result indicates that the Mn2+Mn^{2+} ion substitutes for the NH4+NH_4^{+} ion in ammonium oxalate monohydrate

Zero-Field Splitting Parameters of Cr3+Cr^{3+} in Lithium Potassium Sulphate at Orthorhombic Symmetry Site

The superposition model is used to investigate the crystal field parameters, BkqB_{kq} of Cr3+Cr^{3+} in lithium potassium sulphate. The zero field splitting parameters D and E are then determined using microscopic spin Hamiltonian theory and compared with the experimental values obtained by electron paramagnetic resonance. Both zero field splitting parameters D and E evaluated theoretically are in good agreement with the experimental values. The results suggest that the Cr3+Cr^{3+} ion occupies substitutional K^{+} site in lithium potassium sulphate

ESR Study of Cu(II)-L-Serine in Solution

    No full text
ESR study of Cu(II)-L-Serine complex has been carried out in solution at room temperature. The isotropic spin-hamiltonian parameters go and a have been evaluated. Various linewidth parameters have been determined theoretically as well as from computer simulated experimental linewidth data. The experimental and theoretical linewidths differ slightly due to contribution of some unspecified mechanisms viz. spin-rotational relaxation and/or electric field fluctuation mechanisms

Study of ESR absorption and bonding character of copper (II) complex with L-Hydroxyproline

The ESR study of the copper (II) complex with L-Hydroxyproline amino acid has been carried out in three different forms, namely polycrystalline, glass and solution states. The optical absorption and magnetic susceptibility measurements have also been performed. Various magnetic and non-magnetic parameters have been evaluated. Further, these parameters have been used to determine the bonding parameters based on the theoretical deduction of Roberts and Koski. Hyperfine linewidth of each line has been measured and the data thus obtained have been interpreted on the basis of Kivelson's theory of linewidth in solution. The magnetic susceptibility of the complex has also been theoretically calculated. The data obtained from all the three measurements described above have been found to justify one and the other.L'étude par EPR du complexe de cuivre (II) et de l'amino acide L-Hydroxyproline a été réalisée sous différentes formes : polycristalline, verre en solution.
