Differential associations of personal and general just-world beliefs with the Five-Factor and HEXACO models of personality.

Recent literature evidences differential associations of personal and general just-world beliefs with constructs in the interpersonal domain. In line with this research, we examine the respective relationships of each just-world belief with the Five-Factor and the HEXACO models of personality in one representative sample of the working population of Switzerland and one sample of the general US population, respectively. One suppressor effect was observed in both samples: Neuroticism and emotionality was positively associated with general just-world belief, but only after controlling for personal just-world belief. In addition, agreeableness was positively and honesty-humility negatively associated with general just-world belief but unrelated to personal just-world belief. Conscientiousness was consistently unrelated to any of the just-world belief and extraversion and openness to experience revealed unstable coefficients across studies. We discuss these points in light of just-world theory and their implications for future research taking both dimensions into account

Measuring Coverage of Prolog Programs Using Mutation Testing

Testing is an important aspect in professional software development, both to avoid and identify bugs as well as to increase maintainability. However, increasing the number of tests beyond a reasonable amount hinders development progress. To decide on the completeness of a test suite, many approaches to assert test coverage have been suggested. Yet, frameworks for logic programs remain scarce. In this paper, we introduce a framework for Prolog programs measuring test coverage using mutations. We elaborate the main ideas of mutation testing and transfer them to logic programs. To do so, we discuss the usefulness of different mutations in the context of Prolog and empirically evaluate them in a new mutation testing framework on different examples.Comment: 16 pages, Accepted for presentation in WFLP 201

Comprehensive analysis of normal adjacent to tumor transcriptomes.

Histologically normal tissue adjacent to the tumor (NAT) is commonly used as a control in cancer studies. However, little is known about the transcriptomic profile of NAT, how it is influenced by the tumor, and how the profile compares with non-tumor-bearing tissues. Here, we integrate data from the Genotype-Tissue Expression project and The Cancer Genome Atlas to comprehensively analyze the transcriptomes of healthy, NAT, and tumor tissues in 6506 samples across eight tissues and corresponding tumor types. Our analysis shows that NAT presents a unique intermediate state between healthy and tumor. Differential gene expression and protein-protein interaction analyses reveal altered pathways shared among NATs across tissue types. We characterize a set of 18 genes that are specifically activated in NATs. By applying pathway and tissue composition analyses, we suggest a pan-cancer mechanism of pro-inflammatory signals from the tumor stimulates an inflammatory response in the adjacent endothelium

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ROTATOR CUFF STRENGTH PARAMETERS AND THROWING VELOCITY OF COLLEGE BASEBALL PLAYERS

Pitching a baseball is a complex, highly skilled movement that has been divided into four stages by sports researchers. In examining the throwing motion, researchers have: 1) attempted to find the most significant muscle groups of the upper extremity that contribute to throwing velocity (Jobe, 1987; Pedegna, 1982 and Toyoshima and Hoshikawa, 1974); 2) concluded that the shoulder and internal and external rotator groups are the most significant contributors to the throwing motion (Alderink and Kuck, 1986; Cain, Mutschler, Fu and Lee, 1987, Cook, Gray, Savinar-Nogue, Medeiros, 1987, and Pappas, Zawacki and MacCarthy, 1985); and 3) demonstrated that the motions of shoulder rotation are important during tht throwing performance (Atwater, Feltner and Dapena, 1986; Gainor, 1980; and Tullos and King, 1973)

Frankbaronia velata nov. sp., a putative peronosporomycete oogonium containing multiple oospores from the Lower Devonian Rhynie chert

    Get PDF
Spherical to pyriform microfossils containing multiple smooth-walled spherules from the Lower Devonian Rhynie chert are described as oogonia of a new fossil peronosporomycete based on congruencies in basic morphology to the polyoosporous oogonia of certain extant Saprolegniales. Because the new fossils also resemble Frankbaronia polyspora, a putative peronosporomycete described previously from the Rhynie chert, they are assigned to the fossil genus Frankbaronia and formally proposed as a new species, F. velata. Surrounding the oogonium is a conspicuous sheath of consolidated mucilage, produced and secreted by the oogonium during development. The discovery of F. velata adds to our understanding of the microbial diversity in early terrestrial ecosystems, and contributes to the documentation of the evolutionary history of the Peronosporomycetes.

Mixed convection in a rotating porous cavity having local heater

    Get PDF
Numerical simulation of convective heat transfer inside a rotating porous square cavity with local heater of constant temperature has been performed. Governing equations formulated on the basis of mass, momentum and energy conservation laws written using the dimensionless stream function, vorticity and temperature have been solved by the finite difference method. The effects of Rayleigh and Taylor numbers on periodic flow and heat transfer have been studied
