    Factors that Determine Where a Farmer Buys and Sells

    The main objectives of the survey were to determine what farm patrons looked for when choosing a farm supply or grain marketing firm and to determine the attitudes of farmers when using marketing services and purchasing supplies. The following factors and attitudes were considered: 1. The ranking of present services, practices, and other characteristics influencing a farmer’s choice of who receives his patronage. 2. The effect of various practices, characteristics, and actions that influence a farmer’s choice of a business establishment. These include management’s actions and the personalities of management and employees, neighbors’ actions and rumors, size of the firm, convenience of the firm (facilities and location), and availability of credits and discounts. 3. Farmers’ attitudes toward cooperatives as compared to independents and toward the handling of deferred patronage refunds. 4. Farmers’ attitudes about pricing and marketing of their grain. 5. The important services which farmers may desire from marketing and farm supply firms in the future

    Analyzing Reward Dynamics and Decentralization in Ethereum 2.0: An Advanced Data Engineering Workflow and Comprehensive Datasets for Proof-of-Stake Incentives

    Ethereum 2.0, as the preeminent smart contract blockchain platform, guarantees the precise execution of applications without third-party intervention. At its core, this system leverages the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, which utilizes a stochastic process to select validators for block proposal and validation, consequently rewarding them for their contributions. However, the implementation of blockchain technology often diverges from its central tenet of decentralized consensus, presenting significant analytical challenges. Our study collects consensus reward data from the Ethereum Beacon chain and conducts a comprehensive analysis of reward distribution and evolution, categorizing them into attestation, proposer and sync committee rewards. To evaluate the degree of decentralization in PoS Ethereum, we apply several inequality indices, including the Shannon entropy, the Gini Index, the Nakamoto Coefficient, and the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI). Our comprehensive dataset is publicly available on Harvard Dataverse, and our analytical methodologies are accessible via GitHub, promoting open-access research. Additionally, we provide insights on utilizing our data for future investigations focused on assessing, augmenting, and refining the decentralization, security, and efficiency of blockchain systems

    Time Moves Faster When There is Nothing You Anticipate: The Role of Time in MEV Rewards

    We present a novel analysis of a competitive dynamic present on Ethereum known as "waiting games", where validators can use their distinct monopoly position in their assigned slots to delay block proposals in order to optimize returns through Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) payments, a type of incentive outside the Proof-of-Stake incentive scheme. However, this strategy risks block exclusion due to missed slots or potential orphaning. Our analysis reveals evidence that, although there are substantial incentives to undertaking the risks, validators are not capitalizing on waiting games, leaving potential profits unrealized. Moreover, we present an agent-based model to test the eventual consensus disruption caused by waiting games under different settings, arguing that such disruption only occurs with significant delay strategies. Ultimately, this research provides in-depth insights into Ethereum's waiting games, illuminating the trade-offs and potential profit opportunities for validators in this evolving blockchain landscape

    Blockade of Astrocytic Calcineurin/NFAT Signaling Helps to Normalize Hippocampal Synaptic Function and Plasticity in a Rat Model of Traumatic Brain Injury

    Increasing evidence suggests that the calcineurin (CN)-dependent transcription factor NFAT (Nuclear Factor of Activated T cells) mediates deleterious effects of astrocytes in progressive neurodegenerative conditions. However, the impact of astrocytic CN/NFAT signaling on neural function/recovery after acute injury has not been investigated extensively. Using a controlled cortical impact (CCI) procedure in rats, we show that traumatic brain injury is associated with an increase in the activities of NFATs 1 and 4 in the hippocampus at 7 d after injury. NFAT4, but not NFAT1, exhibited extensive labeling in astrocytes and was found throughout the axon/dendrite layers of CA1 and the dentate gyrus. Blockade of the astrocytic CN/NFAT pathway in rats using adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors expressing the astrocyte-specific promoter Gfa2 and the NFAT-inhibitory peptide VIVIT prevented the injury-related loss of basal CA1 synaptic strength and key synaptic proteins and reduced the susceptibility to induction of long-term depression. In conjunction with these seemingly beneficial effects, VIVIT treatment elicited a marked increase in the expression of the prosynaptogenic factor SPARCL1 (hevin), especially in hippocampal tissue ipsilateral to the CCI injury. However, in contrast to previous work on Alzheimer\u27s mouse models, AAV-Gfa2-VIVIT had no effects on the levels of GFAP and Iba1, suggesting that synaptic benefits of VIVIT were not attributable to a reduction in glial activation per se. Together, the results implicate the astrocytic CN/NFAT4 pathway as a key mechanism for disrupting synaptic remodeling and homeostasis in the hippocampus after acute injury

    High-purity germanium detector ionization pulse shapes of nuclear recoils, gamma interactions and microphonism

    Nuclear recoil measurements with high-purity Germanium detectors are very promising to directly detect dark matter candidates. The main background sources in such experiments are natural radioactivity and microphonic noise. Digital pulse shape analysis is an encouraging approach to reduce the background originating from the latter. To study the pulse shapes of nuclear recoil events we performed a neutron scattering experiment, which covered the ionization energy range from 20 to 80 keV. We have measured ionization efficiencies as well and found an excellent agreement with the theory of Lindhard. In a further experiment we measured pulse shapes of a radioactive gamma-source and found no difference to nuclear recoil pulse shapes. Pulse shapes originating from microphonics of a HPGe-detector are presented for the first time. A microphonic noise suppression method, crucial for dark matter direct detection experiments, can therefore be calibrated with pulse shapes from gamma-sources.Comment: 11 pages (latex) including 6 postscript figures and 2 table

    Orientation dependent molecular electrostatics drives efficient charge generation in homojunction organic solar cells

    Organic solar cells usually utilise a heterojunction between electron-donating (D) and electron-accepting (A) materials to split excitons into charges. However, the use of D-A blends intrinsically limits the photovoltage and introduces morphological instability. Here, we demonstrate that polycrystalline films of chemically identical molecules offer a promising alternative and show that photoexcitation of α-sexithiophene (α-6T) films results in efficient charge generation. This leads to α-6T based homojunction organic solar cells with an external quantum efficiency reaching up to 44% and an open-circuit voltage of 1.61 V. Morphological, photoemission, and modelling studies show that boundaries between α-6T crystalline domains with different orientations generate an electrostatic landscape with an interfacial energy offset of 0.4 eV, which promotes the formation of hybridised exciton/charge-transfer states at the interface, dissociating efficiently into free charges. Our findings open new avenues for organic solar cell design where material energetics are tuned through molecular electrostatic engineering and mesoscale structural control
