    Low cost silicon solar arrays

    Continuous growth methodology for silicon solar cell ribbons deals with capillary effects, die effects, thermal effects and crystal shape effects. Emphasis centers on the shape of the meniscus at the ribbon edge as a factor contributing to ribbon quality with respect to defect densities. Structural and electrical characteristics of edge defined, film-fed grown silicon ribbons are elaborated. Ribbon crystal solar cells produce AMO efficiencies of 6 to 10%

    The stellar content of 10 dwarf irregular galaxies

    We examine the stellar content of 10 dwarf irregular galaxies of which broad-band CCD photometry was published in Hopp & Schulte-Ladbeck (1995). We also present Halpha images for several of these galaxies. The galaxies in the sample are located outside of the Local Group. Yet, they are still close enough to be resolved into single stars from the ground but only the brightest stars (or star clusters) are detected and there is severe crowding. The sample galaxies were selected to be isolated from massive neighbors; about half of them are (mostly peripheral) members of groups, the other half is located in the field. We discuss the vicinity of the sample galaxies to other dwarf galaxies. In order to interpret single-star photometry and draw conclusions about the stellar content or other distance-dependent quantities, it is crucial that accurate distances to the galaxies be known. The distances to the sample galaxies are not well known since all but one have not had a primary distance indicator measured. We make an attempt to constrain the distances by identifying the envelope of the brightest supergiants in B, B-R and R, B-R color-magnitude diagrams, but the results are not very accurate (we estimate the minimal error on the distance modulus is 1.36 mag). Nevertheless, the fact that the sample galaxies are resolved with direct ground-based imaging indicates that they are sufficiently nearby to represent good candidates for observations with instruments that provide high spatial resolution, e.g., adaptive optics systems on large ground-based telescopes, or the Hubble Space Telescope. ...Comment: 56 pages, 4 tables, 35 figures, The Astronomical Journal, accepte

    Since HIV-1 treatment is increasingly considered an effective preventionstrategy, it is important to study local HIV-1 epidemics to formulate tailored preventionpolicies. The prevalence of HIV-1 in Cyprus was historically low until 2005. To investigatethe shift in epidemiological trends, we studied the transmission dynamics of HIV-1 in Cyprususing a densely sampled Cypriot HIV-1 transmission cohort that included 85 percent ofHIV-1-infected individuals linked to clinical care between 1986 and 2012 based on detailedclinical, epidemiological, behavioral and HIV-1 genetic information. Subtyping andtransmission cluster reconstruction were performed using maximum likelihood and Bayesianmethods, and the transmission chain network was linked to the clinical, epidemiological andbehavioral data. The results reveal that for the main HIV-1 subtype A1 and B sub-epidemics,young and drug-naïve HIV-1-infected individuals in Cyprus are driving the dynamics of thelocal HIV-1 epidemic. The results of this study provide a better understanding of thedynamics of the HIV-1 infection in Cyprus, which may impact the development of preventionstrategies. Furthermore, this methodology for analyzing densely sampled transmissiondynamics is applicable to other geographic regions to implement effective HIV-1 preventionstrategies in local settings

    The concordance of the limiting antigen and the Bio-Rad avidity assays in persons from Estonia infected mainly with HIV-1 CRF06_cpx

    BACKGROUND: Serological assays to determine HIV incidence have contributed to estimates of HIV incidence, monitoring of HIV spread, and evaluation of prevention strategies. Two frequently used incidence assays are the Sedia HIV-1 LAg-Avidity EIA (LAg) and the Bio-Rad avidity incidence (BRAI) assays with a mean duration of recent infection (MDRI) of 130 and 240 days for subtype B infections, respectively. Little is known about how these assays perform with recombinant HIV-1 strains. We evaluated the concordance of these assays in a population infected mainly with HIV-1 CRF06_cpx. MATERIAL/METHODS: Remnant serum samples (n = 288) collected from confirmed, newly-diagnosed HIV-positive persons from Estonia in 2013 were tested. Demographic and clinical data were extracted from clinical databases. LAg was performed according to the manufacturer’s protocol and BRAI testing was done using a validated protocol. Samples with LAg-pending or BRAI-invalid results were reclassified as recent if they were from persons with viral loads <1000 copies/mL or were reclassified as long-term if presenting with AIDS. RESULTS: In total 325 new HIV infections were diagnosed in 2013 in Estonia. Of those 276 persons were tested with both LAg and BRAI. Using assay results only, the recency rate was 44% and 70% by LAg and BRAI, respectively. The majority of samples (92%) recent by LAg were recent by BRAI. Similarly, 89% of samples long-term by BRAI were long-term by LAg. After clinical information was included in the analysis, the recency rate was 44% and 62% for LAg and BRAI, respectively. The majority of samples (86%) recent by LAg were recent by BRAI and 91% of long-term infections by BRAI were long-term by LAg. CONCLUSIONS: Comparison of LAg and BRAI results in this mostly CRF06_cpx-infected population showed good concordance for incidence classification. Our finding of a higher recency rate with BRAI in this population is likely related to the longer MDRI for this assay

    Improved model of the triple system V746 Cassiopeiae that has a bipolar magnetic field associated with the tertiary

    V746 Cas is known to be a triple system composed of a close binary with an alternatively reported period of either 25d:4 or 27d:8 and a distant third component in a 170 yr (62 000 d) orbit. The object was also reported to exhibit multiperiodic light variations with periods from 0d: 83 to 2d: 50, on the basis of which it was classified as a slowly pulsating B star. Interest in further investigation of this system was raised by the recent detection of a variable magnetic field. Analysing spectra from four instruments, earlier published radial velocities, and several sets of photometric observations, we arrived at the following conclusions: (1) The optical spectrum is dominated by the lines of the B-type primary (Teff 1 16 500(100)K), contributing 70% of the light in the optical region, and a slightly cooler B tertiary (Teff 3 13 620(150)K). The lines of the low-mass secondary are below our detection threshold; we estimate that it could be a normal A or F star. (2) We resolved the ambiguity in the value of the inner binary period and arrived at a linear ephemeris of Tsuper: conj: = HJD 2 443 838:78(81) + 25d:41569(42) × E. (3) The intensity of the magnetic field undergoes a sinusoidal variation in phase with one of the known photometric periods, namely 2d:503867(19), which we identify with the rotational period of the tertiary. (4) The second dominant photometric 1d: 0649524(40) period is tentatively identified with the rotational period of the broad-lined B-type primary, but this interpretation is much less certain and needs further verification. (5) If our interpretation of photometric periods is confirmed, the classification of the object as a slowly pulsating B star should be revised. (6) Applying an N-body model to different types of available observational data, we can constrain the orbital inclination of the inner orbit to 60° &lt; i1 &lt; 85° even in the absence of binary eclipses, and we estimate the probable properties of the triple system and its components.250015 GA15-02112S Univerzita Karlova v Praze: GA17-00871SAcknowledgements.
